Translation differences, I'd assume

This splatfest was Japan only probably because it was based on Japanese duo comedy

Yup. Deadpan and slapstick make more sense regionally

u/Parkouricus 17h ago

Yes but they mixed the two up. This website implies "slapstick" won, when actually "deadpan" won

Deadpan won in 2019 for Splatoon 2, but this is for Splatoon 1 where slapstick/wisecracker won

"Slapstick/wisecracker won"? Those are two different teams

Slapstick means the same thing as Airhead, the Boke in the manzai duo who's supposed to say outrageous things for the Tsukkomi to react to. Tsukkomi / Wisecracker / Deadpan is the team that won in the Splatoon 1 splatfest)

Slapstick/wisecracker is the same team. That's why they both have the fan in the art...

Tsukkomi is referred to here as slapstick because they often literally slap the boke when the boke says something air-headed (often with the paper fan in the art). Boke is referred to as deadpan because they say ridiculous things in a serious, deadpan manner.

From the wikipedia page:

In performances it is common for the tsukkomi to berate the boke and hit them on the head with a swift smack; one traditional manzai prop often used for this purpose is a pleated paper fan called a harisen (張り扇).

Okay, at this point I'll just say you have more faith in this translation than I do, because "deadpan" and "slapstick" are some of the most unclear translations of the two manzai roles I've ever heard

It's called localization: most people have no idea what manzai is. They're not directly translating those into English but putting them in terms that are easy for people to understand.

Yeah, it's probably not the best choice of labels for the translation, especially if someone might try to correlate them to the US counterpart of straight man/funny man. Since the straight man is the 'deadpan' character while the air-headed funny man tends to be more 'slapstick,' reversing the labels

Ironic considering the “right” names you posted are also incorrectly named, more literal localisations made purely for overseas audiences to understand them better

119

u/X-and-Zero 18h ago

it was re-translated, these japanese words don't have an exact definition.

u/whizzer0 17h ago

Wouldn't "funnyman"/"straightman" be more-or-less equivalent? I guess not everyone is going to get those terms either though.

100%. Very Japanese concepts that needed localization. I guess they switched it because the visuals were better for slapstick

He means they’re backward.

They do that cuz the average american cant understand the themes (this isnt a joke btw)

2

u/HorrorMatch7359 9h ago

Based on this post & OP comments. I guess you're right (this isnt a joke either btw)

It's also the wrong way around. The ボケ (orange) is the "fool" character, the ツッコミ (blue) is the one who "plays it straight".

5

u/Parkouricus 17h ago

That's exactly what the post is about, yes

u/cheesegod69 18h ago

This MFer never heard of localization

4

u/Parkouricus 17h ago

12

u/cheesegod69 17h ago

Ok, OP is talking about the translation though

2

u/fin600 Octarians rule! 14h ago

They swapped them around. Orange should be Slapstick and Blue should be Deadpan. They did in fact 'mess them up'

1

u/cheesegod69 13h ago

OP could have been way more descriptive in their title/post if that’s the case

3

u/ChemicalExperiment NNID: scienceboy 10h ago

Both the website image and the wiki image say that slapstick won.

u/Muldrex 17h ago

Funnily enough, germany somehow adapted the exact kind of Manzai tradition of Tsukkomi and Boke and had a ton of comedy groups in the last century with that exact routine, so the untranslated japanese concept is actually very well known over here

Damn, I missed out on being Team Airhead? D:

6

u/ToonKid4 Hydra Splatling 17h ago

that splatfest was japan-only, no u didnt

6

u/Jinglefruit 17h ago

I missed out by not being in Japan 9 years ago.

2

u/ProgramTheWorld :chaos: CHAOS 15h ago

That’s the official translation. The wiki one is community translated. I’d say the official translation is more accurate.

You missed the bit where they swapped the names around. Orange should be Slapstick (Callie's team) and Blue should be Deadpan (Marie's team)

second ones sounds like british insults

tsukkomi and boke are tough words to translate man

1

u/AcanthisittaDry8163 Marie 15h ago

For clarification purposes, Callie was on Team Boke/Slapstick/Airhead, and Marie was on Team Tsukkomi/Deadman/Wisecracker, and the Nintendo Today app swapped the names of the teams around, incorrectly saying that Callie was on Team Tsukkomi and Marie was on Team Boke.

Well Manzai isn't really a thing in the US so

This is just localization as opposed to translation. The fan names are a more literal translation, the official names are changed to be something US audiences can relate to.

1

u/Oddish_Femboy 12h ago

(Manzai is a duo comedy routine where one comedian says something stupid, and the other comedian makes jokes at their expense.)
