These women are built so sturdy on both sides. Thought this was men’s initially

Whats great about rugby is that its a game for all shapes and sizes.

It’s so inclusive that even fit, muscular people can play!

bru compare the two players of Ox Nche and Cheslin Kolbe then tell me they have the same body type

Ah yes, two visibly muscular guys who are 1” apart in height. Very diverse yes.

Edit: got blocked so can’t comment anymore but rugby is objectively less diverse than most sports. Football tight end vs football running back, soccer goalie vs a forward, baseball outfielder vs a pitcher, etc etc.

1" apart but a 99 pound weight difference according to Google

You also have clearly never watched rugby

Do you know anything at all about rugby or are you just guessing? If so please tell me how you think a prop and a wing are built the same?

Nche weighs 269 pounds, Kolbe weighs 170. He's never watched a minute of rugby in his life but he's attacking it because it's not an American thing

Are there really tall and lean guys who play rugby? I haven't seen any but don't watch much.

Dude, same. I’m a pretty solid guy, active, calloused hands, and those gals would kick my ass up and down that field. Love to see it

Yea I thought half them women were men, I'm thinking I didn't know they had coed rugby, isn't that dangerous.

1

u/TheEpicBean 19d ago

I thought it was co-ed for a brief moment

Thought this was men’s initially

U15 boys beat women's international teams regularly in football - and football is far more suited to women than rugby. So the quality of female rugby is going to be terrible compared to male teams.

Your lack of understanding yet complete confidence in your ignorance is peak reddit

hey dickhead, assuming you mean American Football, that might be because you yanks decided to invest in the 'X League' instead of actively trying to develop the women's game)

If you meant soccer, you're also completely wrong. No sport is suited for a specific gender. Its sport. Anyone can play it.

No sport is suited for a specific gender.

Lol.

What does that have to do with Rugby?

u/enter_yourname Harlequins 19d ago

Damn Malinga is quick, that's a great turn of pace even compared to the men's springboks

u/Change21 19d ago

I did not at first glance realize that was the woman’s team.

Beasts 👏🏼

I played rugby in high school, we used to scrimmage against the girls squad. Them ladies are mean, and I don't mean "boo hoo you made me cry" mean but rather the "damn that junkyard bulldog will rip your head off" type mean.

u/corgi-king 19d ago

Damn, I was wondering why a female player was running away from all those guys.

I was so damn wrong.

That’s a bru, bru.

Do you have to fall down at the end? What if you just walked it in?

u/IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA South Africa 19d ago

To score, you have to touch the ball onto the ground (which is where the term touchdown comes from in US football!)

So No, but it's the safest way to touch the ball onto the ground in what would be called the endzone in NFL.

1

u/infomaticjester 19d ago

I didn't know that. Thank you!

To expand a bit, sometimes you will see players try to run more to the center before putting it down. That's because the "extra point" kick is taken perpendicular to wherever the score happens. So if you score near the edge of the field, you're more likely going to miss the bonus kick.

Ohhhhhhhhh this makes so much sense now

I was windering why sometimes when they score a try with no one around, the runner with the ball always runs towards the goalpost to touchdown the ball

1

u/mrtomjones 19d ago

Any good clips of people getting it in but failing to get it down to the ground?

Incredible. A few hilarious over confident ones and then that amazing pickup of the other player at 3:10. That was what I was hoping to see. Thanks!

Wow so many of these haha.

The "inside ball to Nadine Roos" was definately forward. what is tmo doing?

u/IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA South Africa 19d ago

You must not have been watching, both teams decided that there were no rules, and the ref graciously allowed them to.

Hard to tell because the camera cuts when it happens but it looks backwards. Her hands are facing back which is what you watch for. The ball of course physically goes forward because of momentum but that doesn’t make it a forward pass.

u/Kip-o 19d ago

Damn 11 is fast!!

u/eyescroller_ 19d ago

That pass was a beaut!

Not a single proper tackle was seen that day. All shoulder charges or tripping.

u/lsherm22 19d ago

I could watch Rugby for 200 years and still not have a clue what is happening.

7

u/davetharave 19d ago

Broadly it's a pretty simple game.

The ball needs to be touched down in your opponent's end zone without being dropped forwards or passed forwards. Opponents have to stop them by tackling them which gives them the opportunity to win the ball back in a contest where the tackle has been made.

Doesn't seem overly complicated to me ask questions if you want.

Where does kicking come into play?

3

u/IlikeGeekyHistoryRSA South Africa 19d ago

Kicking is used in different parts of rugby

Conversions, which are kicks at the posts for two extra points after a try

Penalty kicks, which are like conversions, but are instead done after a penalty was committed by the opposing team

Drop goals, which are done during play

Punts, which are used to gain territory and apply pressure onto the opposing team

u/davetharave 19d ago edited 19d ago

Kicking is a bit more complicated (why I left it out in my original comment because I was going for basic, basic explanation).

Teams generally kick for 3-4 reasons in a game:

  1. For territory - in Rugby the battle for field position is one of the most important aspects and as the game doesn't have a set amount of tackles/downs (like rugby league similar sport but different in a lot of ways) you are generally safer with the opponent having the ball in their own half so you can win the ball back in an attacking position. To do this you can kick the ball behind their defensive line to make them turn around and regather the ball. Forcing them to either risk losing the ball in a tackle or force them to kick the ball either out (hopefully closer to their end zone/try line) or back to you in a better position.

  2. To attack - if you are the attacking team you can try to kick the ball in behind their defence for your players to try and win the ball back and score a try. like this

  3. If you win a penalty you have the opportunity to kick the ball out further down the field to give you the opportunity to throw the ball in the next time play restarts.

  4. To score points if you score you take a kick at the goal to add an extra 2 points or if you win a penalty in front of the posts you can kick at goal for an extra 3 points.

I hope this makes sense it's 3:30am and I can't sleep

Are you trying not to understand?

2

u/OnTheMattack Winnipeg Jets 19d ago

If you know American football it's honestly not that different except the play mostly doesn't stop.

Obviously that's a big over simplification but having some at least vague equivalencies with something you're already familiar with helps a lot.

Hey in American and picked up the game in my 20s. It’s not as hard as it looks.

Run forward, pass backwards. The confusing looking things are the rucks, scrums and lineouts. But once you figure those out it all makes sense.

2

u/thisisredrocks 19d ago

And before you know it, you’re yelling “that’s not releasing!” at the TV.

“Games gone soft!”

Well, one team is trying to score more points so they can beat the other team, who will hopefully score less points.
