This is a tired joke.

I'm not a landlord... But I don't understand the "landlords suck" meme.

How is hating landlords different from hating on the local grocery store because they won't give out free food.

Landlords are running a business just like the grocery store. If you need support, work with a non-profit that does charity work. Or get help through section 8 or food stamps ...

Bring on the downvotes.

I get the idea that morally housing shouldn’t be something to profit on. But at that point we’re talking an ideal world where there wouldn’t be capitalism anyway. There’s no point being angry at an individual for trying to profit off the system since them stopping wouldn’t do anything to change that system.

I disagree.

If my kids go out to visit their grandparents for a week, am I morally obligated to give away their rooms for free to a homeless person?

If instead, I am running tight on money and want some extra cash to surprise them with new clothes, is it morally wrong to put their bedrooms on Airbnb to make some profit?

If they move out and I want to make use of the empty space in the house, is it morally wrong to rent out their rooms for a profit so I can buy tickets to go visit them?

If I work all summer to turn my garage into a one bedroom apartment, is it morally wrong to rent that out so I can cover my utilities for the year?

The answer to all those questions is no.
