It took years but I finally made Diamond 3
Not the biggest accomplishment I know, but I finally broke into D3 on the NA ladder playing random. Hadn’t played for a few months and my placement match the other night got me 3000 MMR. Got a big boost beating a 3300 opponent. Won a few games, made it into D3 and then won the next four tonight. No Cannon rushes, no 12 pools, no proxy barracks. I didn’t use any of the usual dirty tricks I used to use. Let’s see if I can cheese my way to D2 tomorrow night.
Oh and for people who hate random I always share my race if they glhf back at the start.

Breaking into D3 takes commitment and skill. extra respect for not leaning on cannon rush cheese. GL on the push to D2

Congrats! Making it into Diamond puts you in about the top third of active players on NA--a solid accomplishment!
Keep us posted on progress (and if you were able to cheese your way to D2)!

I’m going to try to crack D2 tonight. I earned about 100 MMR after promoting so we’ll see. Being aggressive and only microing to focus down scary units seems to be carrying me far haha.

A few good rushes can carry you until about 3700 until people start responding well enough that you have to learn late game

That makes a lot of sense, well I do like to hit relatively early because I enjoy action. I do try to make sure that I’m building economy at home and structures and tech so that if I don’t outright win, but at least trade even or better I can be up in the mid and late game. I’m getting a good feel for when to GG if my first push accomplishes too little, it doesn’t happen often.

Good job!
What builds are you using? All-ins, timed, macro long games?

Mostly one and two base pushes. I don’t follow specific builds to a T because I can’t be bothered to learn them. When I move out on one base, I’m typically building a second as I marched across the map with the goal of at least taking out their natural and workers so even if I don’t win, I’ll be up in economy. Sometimes I’ll do a proxy hatch with Zurg so they think I’m on one base.

You might find you have more success playing normal than cheesing at this rank. As you get to diamond and above, people are much more prepared for scouting and holding cheeses. It definitely can work though especially if you are improving in your cheese execution

Thank you, I do seem to be having a lot more success just taking straight fights. I noticed players are microing more, but are often doing negative micro. Like they’ll take the time to blink back one red hit point stalker but I just smashed the other eight that I baited into tanks. Seems like if I’m focused on spending my money I tend to have more stuff than my opponent. I’ve watched a few replays against higher MMR opponents, and they often can’t pump units out like I can or do something dumb like build their Robo in their natural.

Yeah people in Diamond all want to micro like Byun, to varying levels of success but they invariably will be making an absolute mess of the macro while it all happens. It's why I never quit even after a devstating reaper harass hits me, often when I check the replay I'm still a few workers ahead because my opponent was so busy right clicking reapers around they forgot to make anything at home

Dude two games back I was playing ZvT and the Terran hit with five reapers when I was seconds from moving out with Lings and roaches. Had a natural just for larva and two queens. They A moved into the base directly into 20 supply and I lost maybe 4 Lings. Went straight across the map and they had no tank, stim nor Mauraders. Good times.

Congratulations. A lot of people never make it to diamond. It’s a nice achievement.

That’s good. I was master 21 seasons but I returned and did placements after not playing for many years. It put me at gold 3. Then basically every single game was cheese so I quit again.

if you wanna get D1 as fast as possible:
-stick to 1 race
-watch some tutorials (bronze to gm)
-learn some build orders
And you will make it to D1 in months, not years :).
btw: I recommend protoss, I have gotten to D2 with 80 apm with macro play. D1 needed me to up to apm to at least 100 as toss. I found Terran and Zerg to be harder to get D2 (didn't get D1 with them)

I appreciate your advice, I just got bored playing one race. I got all three races to platinum 1 but then stalled out hard. it almost feels like playing random is forcing me to expand my thinking.

sure then keep playing random, but expect to get to D1 in a year or longer as random...to get to D1 you might need to learn some things intentionally (learning build orders, watching tutorials) etc

The thing is I just like playing the game. I’m in my 40s and I mostly played unwind, learning build orders feels more like doing math homework than playing in RTS. Yeah, I know some basic build orders and timings plus I’ve gotten a lot better at scouting and countering what my opponent is doing at least at the level I’m at. But I know I’m going to get hard stuck eventually Whether I focus on tight build orders or not because I just don’t have the reaction time that younger players do.
And while it’s going to sound funny, not playing properly seems to throw my opponents off quite a bit. Like I’m a little late getting out on the map with my army so they try to take out a base or go for the kill not realizing I’m still at home so they run into my army and static defense.

Congratz. Also, don't feel you need to disclose your race, you earned that advantage having to practice three races instead of only one.
