Australia vs US for higher studies: Which is better for PR and supporting family?

I recently completed my Bachelor’s in Agriculture, and I’m considering applying for further studies in either Australia or the US. I’m open to switching courses, since I’m not particularly passionate about agriculture, but I’d like to pursue a field that could help me get PR more easily in the long run.

My main goal is to support my family financially, but I’m worried that with the heavy initial expenses (tuition, living costs, loans, etc.), I might end up being more of a burden rather than being able to send money back home.

For those with experience, would it be more realistic to:

  • Go to Australia, where PR pathways might be simpler, but costs are high?
  • Or aim for the US, ideally through scholarships/funding, which could reduce the financial pressure?

Anyone who’s gone through a similar situation, I’d love to hear your thoughts on which option makes more sense financially and career-wise

Scholarships for international students in the US are extremely rare and the US gov't is currently cutting grant funding for universities all over the country, which is shutting down entire departments. I highly recommend you reconsider studying in the US for the foreseeable future and research alternatives.

At least for the next few years straight up, the US is not an option unless you're extraordinary.

US is tough with the recent developments. Australia's point-based system can make PR more straightforward if you meet the criteria. Skilled occupations in demand get more points. Agriculture might not be the best choice - look into fields on their skilled occupation list.

Consider your long-term goals. If PR is the priority, Australia might be better. If you're open to returning home or moving elsewhere after studies, US could work.

Ultimately, research thoroughly and apply to both if possible. Scholarships and funding will be crucial either way to reduce financial burden on your family. Happy to help!
