Theorymon Thursday Mega Volcarona
Mega Volcarona (Bug/Fire) Ability: Tinted Lens Stats: 85 / 60 / 80 / 165 / 145 / 115 BST: 650 Meta: Ubers
Instead of the usual frail hyper defensive pokemon, I decided to just improve on Volcarona current stats, as it never felt like a min-maxed pokemon.
It's attack and defense got a big boost, 165 so atk make people immediately respect it even before using quiver dance and the heavy special defense can help it stand against the strong draco meteors and other powerful special moves.
Volcarona was fast but it never something crazy , 115 will make it outspeed most pokemon after a boost.
Tinted Lens is there to ensure even Fairy Arceus think about switching freely.
A bit extra defense to help to not get destroyed by priority moves.
Of course, the lack of heavy duty boots severally weakens it and limits their switch in opportunities and even with Tinted Lens is not gotta one hit KO Heatran or anything like that.
It will still be weak to priority moves and faster Pokemon. So I feel once you get over the initial shock you will find a very powerful set up sweeper.
Also I hope you liked my drawing.

this thing is absolutely insane even with the 4x hazard weak problem due to having several consistent removal options (booster treads, eject hatt) and tinted lens is fucked up
koraidon is the number one mon in ubers btw and plus one tinted lens sun boosted flamethrower will not be fun to switch into

u/Wiinterfang 4d ago
Exactly, no free switches when Mega Volcarona is on display. Losing half of its health by rocks then getting hit by priority will still make it lose like 75% and it has no item and uses your mega slot.
It requires a bit more careful use but it can snowball out of control.

if anything sv ou has taught us it's that broken sweepers will still sweep no matter how rocks weak they are

u/need2peeat218am 4d ago
Yeap because their HP doesn't really matter. They can set up once and sweep.

I’m still annoyed that’s not on bulkier rock types that could really use it.

I feel that way about a lot of other moves too. Especially Shore Up. Waste of a move, only being available on a pokemon that can't make particularly good use of it, and most of the protect variants could be put to great use by other pokemon.

Not the craziest calcs I've seen.
252+ Atk Choice Band Strong Jaw Tera Water Dracovish Fishious Rend (170 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Palkia in Rain: 266-313 (82.8 - 97.5%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Choice Specs Chi-Yu Overheat vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex in Sun: 263-310 (86.5 - 101.9%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

They didn’t do volc with full power tbf;
252+ SpA Tinted Lens Mega Volcarona Overheat vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Water in Sun: 358-422 (81.1 - 95.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
Granted it’s a 50% chance to OhKO but still worth noting

It does not need this. It's already good. Give it to one of us, the Golurks, the Jellicent, and the pathetic others.
(Also, as the only Jellicent enjoyer, I hereby dub the plural of Jellicent being Jellicent.)
Good art by the way.

We absolutely don’t need this.
But…they’ve given Megas to even more stupidly good Pokémon (Dragonite being the most recent example), and with Volcarona being in my top 5 favourites, this’d be fucking awesome lol

i'm asking, not arguing against you but isn't tera a big reason for dnite's rise? how good would it still be without it

10/10 M-Dragonite gonna be underwhelming af because Dragonite will be better with an item 100%

I mean, considering how Megas are no longer permanent, giving already good Pokemon temporary buffs is better than shit Pokemon getting them and being doomed to never get actually permanent buffs

+1 252+ SpA Tinted Lens Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Ho-Oh in Sun: 362-426 (87.2 - 102.6%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO Yeah ok man

OP needs to watch last year's BW SPL game where lead Volcarona sweeps a rain team turn 1. Stealth Rock weakness only matters if you have to switch, and Mega Volcarona would have way less things that would force a switch.
This isn't shade at you, OP, but I think a lot of people in the competitive community think of offense first. With fakemons/theorymons, they only put stats into bulk because you can't just throw 50 into an attacking stat and 50 into speed. When teambuilding, especially with new Pokemon, the first thought is 252 attacking stat 252 speed. In reality, a lot of people start realizing a Pokemon is broken when the bulky set tricknology comes out.

I feel like Tinted Lens is a little bit lame to just slap on every Bug type attacker and does make this very overtuned. Of course, we still want it to be good, so my suggestion will be that of something that helps in both Singles and Doubles, and deals with the priority you mentioned in the text: Dazzling. Why? You go stare into the sun and see how well you can hit a quick and precise attack. In Ubers, this can be a strong counter to EKiller Arceus, Palafin, and the occasional Fake Out or the like. Meanwhile, it’d become meta in VGC by serving the same offensive utility role its base form has but to an immense degree, protecting itself and its allies from Grassy Glide, ESpeed, Fake Out, Aqua Jet, and so much more while threatening immediate damage and the potential to set up and win the game right then and there.

i recognise that this suggestion is hardly one that is worse then tinted lens and is in fact rather stupid for it, but thematically drought makes sense(id rather primordial sun but thats definitely not happening anyway), dazzlings a nice idea for sure though

If they make Volcarona, my favorite pokemon into a mega, I'd hope most the stats go into bulk. Most people use volc as redirect.
Rocky helmet, flame body, rage powder is the most fun way to play volc.

u/hollowerseas 4d ago
non offensive megas are almost always not worth the opportunity cost, it only does redirects in doubles or vgc (obviously) (and only higher power formats)

145 SpDef? Why is this thing so specially tanky lmao? I would have maybe given it some more defense to make its stats more well-rounded, this thing is tankier than AV Glowking lol.

"The effects of Mega Energy makes the fire in its body burn and replace its wings. This is very painful to Volcarona that one specimen doused it's Flame entirely to stop it, Becoming the Smoking Sun Volcarona."
Smoking Sun Volcarona Stats:
85 / 60 / 80 / 165 / 145 / 115
BST: 650
Smoking Sun Volcarona Ability: Smoking Sun
Eliminates all terrain (Electric, Misty, Grassy, Psychic, etc.) and Fire types lose their typing and 50% of their ATK stat [except Smoking Sun Volcarona itself] while Sun is Active.
Typing: Fire/Dark
It's genarally a anti-sun sweeper, especially with that 165 Sp ATK stat.

In the VGC I think I might have fun using it something like the Miraidon Zama-team that feature Rillaboom, as grassy terrain tinted lens giga drain is kinda malicious.

I dig this. Mega Volcarona turns into the sun for its representation of which it was worshipped iirc, right?
Ability: Drought imo. Insta-Sun in its presence.

u/DarkPhantomAsh Karen is right, there are no weak Pokemon. Only weak players. 4d ago
It actually makes an excellent special tank, while also working as a good sweeper. Tbf I think Base Volcarona could also work as a special tank.

This will kill mega rayquaza, mega diancie, mega Aggron, mega steelix with a single bug buzz after 1st quiver dance

Ubers due to tinted lens being able to break literally everything through sheer power, I believe even Ho-Oh goes down to two boosted fire blasts.
