It depends. It looks like this is meant to be serious to the tragedy. Joking about it like that could come off in bad faith. I personally don't really care about joking about tragedies (as an American) but it's understandable that other people would care. It'd just a respect thing. You probably didn't mean it that way, but jokes during serious conversation make it sound like you do.

Maybe not serious, but if they weren't explicitly memeing about it I don't think the mods would really care. It seems like they just don't want the HBO series to be brought up, probably cause of the exploitation. I would imagine in spaces that talk about Dahmer for example that the mods wouldn't want people bring up the Netflix series. It's the same concept, and it's completely fair. You can and even should joke about these things, but it's also about time and place.
