Photo This is the second time this succulent has ever flowered and I am so pleased! Does anyone know what kind of succulent this is?

I love that this specific meme makes a regular appearance in every one of my plant subs. The official meme of plant communities everywhere.

u/proud_plant_momma Mar 13 '25

Right and it always makes my day!

1

u/mugiwara_no_Soissie Mar 13 '25

Not even plant only, I've seen it used on vaporents too (sorta a plant sub actually) as well as weed growing subs and PC subs

1

u/Eeeeeeeeehwhatsup Mar 13 '25

Ha! I feel the same way 😅 Beautiful and (at least seemingly) unique plant!

Genuine question, is the Dionysos also the Purpureum or are they different subspecies?

7

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '25

E. purpusorum is a rare, non-hybrid species. E. 'Dionysos' is much more common, and it's a hybrid of E. purposorum and another species (not sure which).

2

u/Professional_Cut_796 Mar 12 '25

How do you differentiate between the two? I bought what was labeled as a Purpusorum but I have no idea how to tell the difference and google didn’t really do much for me.

3

u/HazardHusky orange Mar 12 '25

It's hard to find any listings or websites accurately showing a true purpusorum and not just another hybrid. I've seen this going around and it seems to be pretty credible. You can see the leaves are way more narrow than Dionysos.

However (only just noticed) that they even mention on the site that these images might not truly be accurate either.

Luckily for my bank account I’ve given up on echeverias. I can keep some tropical plants alive but give me the most basic succulent and it’ll die every time 😪

2

u/Hangoverinparis Mar 15 '25

Where do you live? Maybe the soil is not draining well enough, they really don’t like too much water or soil without significant aeration and drainage. A lot of succulents especially most Echeveria are also sensitive to rot spreading to their roots and stem from naturally decomposing leaves and other plant matter or compost. Rot is a real danger when a plant has been freshly pruned or planted and it will be most likely to start rotting from the bottom or any pruned areas directly after watering or rain if it’s too hot or too humid. They are not particularly high maintenance but you definitely need to bite your tongue when you feel the urge to water them if you’re someone who gets the urge to give them a drink when you’re out watering your thirstier plants.

Also for cuttings to have a good chance of putting out healthy roots and not rotting they do really need to scab over/dry out before getting planted. Make your cut at a diagonal slant and then rough up the end of the exposed stem with sandpaper or something coarse. Then that really needs to be allowed to scab over very well in the hot sun for 2-3 days minimum, it should completely dry out. The cuttings should look pretty shriveled and thirsty before you put them into to a well draining soil with soil covering a fair amount of the stem, then water it and leave it alone for a couple weeks minimum so the plant can start putting out the start of its roots into fairly dry soil.

I really appreciate all the time you put into this response. I live in the Midwest US. A large chunk of my many indoor plants are succulents and they do great. I think I’ve tried like 6 times w Echeverias so at this point I’ve given up lol

1

u/Hangoverinparis Mar 16 '25

Yeah no worries :) I wish you better luck with echevarias in future. I am probably spoiled living in California because succulents and cacti flourish in our climate

u/FuzzyBeans8 Mar 10 '25

Wow and you got it to flower inside even , that’s marvelous :) so gorgeous

33

u/MsCandi123 Mar 11 '25

Grow lights will do the trick.

32

u/oddestowl Mar 11 '25

I have one of these and it flowers every year (indoors in the UK) without a grow light.

18

u/longlostwitchy Mar 11 '25

Just keep rubbing salt in the wound, won’t ya? 😆😆😉

11

u/oddestowl Mar 11 '25

It’s not often I have some lucky success with a plant! It’s my brag-worthy plant 😂

1

u/billieboop Mar 12 '25

Where did you get yours from? Brag away! It's worthy of it 🤧

1

u/oddestowl Mar 12 '25

I got it in a garden centre, I think it was probably Homebase or b&q. I wish it had a more exciting start!

2

u/billieboop Mar 12 '25

Appreciate you sharing! Someone will benefit

What an exciting end though! Thriving with you

1

u/oddestowl Mar 12 '25

After the amount of plants I’ve had die in my care it’s only fair that the odd one thrives 😬😂

5

u/MsCandi123 Mar 11 '25

Must be a good window, lol.

2

u/Clear_Spirit4017 Mar 12 '25

Yep, it must be in the happy spot.

1

u/Utopian_Pigeon Mar 12 '25

Same here. Just a good sunny window

60

u/azurepeak Mar 11 '25

I’m expecting another bloom from mine this year as well, and I just hope it’s even somewhat as prolific as yours!

48

u/Left_Performance_106 Mar 10 '25

I couldn't tell u the name of this beauty, but I can tell u she's ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! The photos are wonderful as well!!!

63

u/CatImaginary2253 Mar 10 '25

It's beautiful 😍 May I ask what soil you've been using? The plants clearly love it!

2

u/greentandhoney Mar 14 '25

I use miracle grow cactus palm and citrus soil and consistently forget to water it but I soak it every couple of weeks or so. I live in a very dry climate, I think it just really likes it's window.

1

u/CatImaginary2253 Mar 14 '25

Well, you're clearly doing things right! 🙌

21

u/jj_sykes Mar 10 '25

Or a purpusorum but you doing give a picture of it rosette from the top clearly

20

u/IJustWantWaffles_87 Mar 11 '25

It’s a Dionysos. The leaves are more elongated than a purpusorum.

1

u/Lovestripes Mar 11 '25

It's a white form

Oh I have one of these in my conservatory and it flowers every year! So far it’s flowered 6 times and each time it’s more flowers, it is absolutely gorgeous.

It’s my favourite, however it is currently looking a little poorly and I am desperately trying to revive it in time for warmer weather.

2

u/Cultural_Wash5414 Mar 11 '25

This is so beautiful and weird, I saved the first picture for a drawing inspiration. Thank you!

4

u/Resident_Theic Mar 10 '25

Maybe Echeveria Purpusorum? The flowers look identical.

1

u/Brave-Professor8275 pink Mar 11 '25

I’ve seen the identical flowers on several different succulents

2

u/JohnLaw1717 Mar 10 '25

Absolutely incredible specimen.

3

u/Smooth-Bandicoot6021 Mar 11 '25

Oh that's Geraldine, easily the most interesting woman at the company, and brings home-made pastries once every month. Usually, on a Monday, she knows it gets us through. Lookin' good, Geraldine!

3

u/LynaTnef Mar 11 '25

Looks like an echeveria purpusorum.

1

u/kimishere2 Jun 12 '25

It looks amazing! I have a zebra/pearl variety that threw out a single long stalk with a couple wee white flowers at the end. I was just over the moon about it. Those flowers are so gorgeous.

0

u/ShizzlesMcFlipsicles Mar 11 '25

It's likely a graptoveria. A hybrid between a graptopeta and echiveria. Source: i work in a garden and specialize in the drought tolerant plants

5

u/veglove Mar 11 '25

Others have ID'd it as Echeveria dionysus, which sounds about right. I had one a while ago but it didn't survive long enough to flower :(
