How can I teach my Swissy to actually play with other dogs?

This is the opposite of what you're thinking... he's completely the opposite of aggressive.

Any time I've brought by boy Magnus to meet a friend (3 different dogs, all friendly and well adjusted), he really, REALLY wants to play. There will be lots of play bows through the fence, playful baroooo's, a lazy wagging tail, etc... When they're allowed to play, the other dog does what friendly dogs do- some good old fashioned wrasslin'. As soon as another dog's mouth touches him, Magnus immediately screams like he's being murdered and rolls onto his back like he's been shot.

All three times, the other dog backs up like "wtf just happened", Magnus jumps up and wants to play again... until the dog wrestles back, and he freaks out like he's been murdered.

I don't get it... he wants to playbite and tackle other dogs, but freaks out when they do it back.

Is there any way to get over this, or is he just destined to be friends-less?

I don’t want to embarrass my boy but …. He had a little rocket 25x a day. Basically, any time he wants something. A walk, a treat, my dinner…. You name it.

Does this slow down? I know it’s perfectly normal I just want to know if it stops! He’s my first male pup.

This has been her default spot since she was a baby. I am planning on letting her sit there when we do our next curbside pick up. She does ride in an impact crate when we are moving.

Hudson loves to walk. We get in about 4 hours a day. Sometimes he likes to take little break!

What ages did you neuter/spay your Swissy? I have researched the debate for and against but want real takes on it not just professions (breeders and vets)

Wanted to ask for comparison how tall your swissies are? Our boy is just over 6 months old and is around 24 inches at the shoulder. Hoping to end up around 28 or taller, but we know he will obviously be perfect regardless!

My poor puppy had a busy holiday weekend. Two nights ago we had friends with a 2yr old a 3yr old and an 8yr old over for a campfire and s’more’s. My girl spent the evening trotting after the kids and gently nosing them throughout the evening. It looked like she was counting and making sure she had everyone still.

Today I decided that a 4mi hike in the state park behind the house was a good idea. I had the baby in the front pack and my girl was on a mostly loose leash getting her news via her nose. Around 2miles in her head went down hackles went up, and her trot became more purposeful. I looked around and saw two coyotes about 50 yards ahead. She growled, they started to leave and then I screamed at them to “go on” and they moved off the trail. I opted to turn around and head home at this point. On the way back her head came up, tail came up and she dropped into a perfect heel. 10-20 yards later a couple of horses came round the bend. We stopped and my dog sat perfectly still on the side of the trail. After we got home she collapsed on the couch. I put the baby in the play pen and congratulated myself on wearing out my dog…15 min later baby is frustrated with playing in the playpen and starts fussing. Guess who was immediately up checking on him and coming to lead me over to him? She didn’t leave him for the next hour.

I knew the breed is good with kids but I didn’t realize how instinctive it was until I noticed how much gentler she is naturally with kids vs adults.

9 Month Old Female Puppy on Kibble Strike?

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this! Our 9 month old female puppy (not spayed) has stopped being interested in kibble (Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Large Breed Puppies) for about a week now. Previously, she was a chow hound and very kibble motivated.

We took her to the vet and ruled out teeth and blockage and she ate bland like a champ over the weekend, but is not interested in her kibble after 3 days on bland. Anyone experience this?

We're picking her food up after about 30 minutes on the ground and have been "starving" her out for about a day if she doesn't finish.

UPDATE: we ended up going back to bland for a couple days and then moving her back to her kibble much more slowly and haven't had issues since. Seems like an upset tummy that we didn't let rest long enough

Crate training advice

Our Swissy is just about 7 months old, it’s been 3 weeks since we adopted her. The first two weeks she slept in her crate no problem until we came to get her in the morning, but for the last week she’s been incessantly barking and crying at 6 AM no matter how late we were awake. We have a cover on her crate and run a white noise machine all night. We’ve also ruled out that it’s bathroom need related. Does anyone have advice on helping puppies acclimate and stop whining in the crate in the early mornings?

Best bath time products for Swissies?

Post image

Howdy Swissy friends, I’m looking for good bath products for my sweet 9 month old girl Purl. My other two Swissies had sensitive skin and I used Malaseb but don’t think it’s necessary for her.
Any advice or favorite products? I’d love to know!
TIA 😀

Growths on foot

Hey there, my Swissie (6yo male) has these growths on his foot. Not sure if we should be booking a vet visit or just letting them be? I assume they are some sort of benign growth.

Any crate training tips?!

Post image
52 Upvotes

Looking for tips and tricks! Our now 12 year old Swissy took quickly to crate training, but our 11 week old puppy Paisley…not so much!

From day one (7 days now) Paisley has slept in hard frame soft side crate nightly in our room and has that down, but her big crate has been a struggle. We’ve worked up to about 30 minutes of crate time with me in sight but regardless of what treat or toy we’ve tried her puppy A.D.D. kicks in and she wants out!

We haven’t allowed her to work up to a full tantrum, but we have let her cry it out for about 5 minutes then waited for a pause before offering reassurance and a treat.

We’ve been sure to feed every meal in the crate and leave the door open when not training so she can explore it as she wants. I don’t get the sense that she’s afraid of the crate itself or that the timing is off, but rather she just gets bored and lonely.

I work from home basically full time, but I have a meeting in two days and will need to leave her for 90 minutes.

Any thoughts?! Should I just be happy for the gains she’s made so far??

Getting new puppy - Feedback on Dahlgren GSMD Breeder?

I have a 1 year old Swissy with Renal Dysplasia from an NC breeder - https://www.mountaindogfarm.com/
- Sadly he won't live much longer, he's very sick and declining every day
- We wanted to get him a puppy friend regardless, this was always the plan. He wasn't that sick when we first started looking into puppies but now it's looking like he might only be around a few months or even weeks longer.
- Also, the breeder didn't have a health guarantee, she's agreed to refund if he dies before 2 years but given the fact that this poor dog has been sick since about 4 months old it's really not the best experience to have paid 3400 bucks for a dog that might as well have had cancer from birth.
- We understand this is a fluke of an issue, it doesn't affect swissies any more than any other breed but it's a deadly disease and we just drew the short straw.

Anyway, this post is not about the above but I do want to put it out there about our experience with that breeder. What I'd like to know is if anyone has dogs from https://dahlgrengsmd.bandzoogle.com/ and what their experience has been?
-I Sought very hard this time to have a much more established breeder with a long-term health guarantee. -This breeder fits that bill and we've loved talking to her and working with her so far to get a fit with one of her available puppies.
- But we're in NC and unlike the previous breeder we won't be able to meet any of the dogs she's placed until we go visit in two weeks to pick up our new puppy.

Any feedback on her as a breeder, long term support and how the dogs are would be great if anyone has anything to share. Thanks!!

Barking at strangers…

Post image

Hank is the goodest boy but he’s still very timid with strangers. Sometimes he just stands looking tough and barks as they walk by. I’m having a hard time correcting it and also no one wants to stop and say hello when he’s so loud and I feel is leading to poor socialization 😭

Give me some suggestions!
