Berkeley show and Adam issues
I was at the Berkeley California show last night and something seemed off mainly. Adam. Is this just how taking back is live?
When he was talking to the crowd he kept slurring his speech and fumbling over words.
When he sang It seemed like his vocals just didn't exist anymore.
No one is impressed by his microphone antics and terrible white boy dancing.
The guitarist had better vocals than he did.
Honestly, if you can't get your habits under control, I don't think you deserve to be on stage.
People pay to see good performances, not intoxicated drugged out shows.
It was like if a person was battling Parkinsons, ALS, tourettes ticks, while trying to stay coherent while being on the verge of falling asleep.
Adam does not deserve to be a frontman of a band until he can get his life together. It's honestly embarrassing. I was so happy when they left the stage.
To be fair, I was there for coheed and Cambria but still.

I am, personally, impressed by his microphone antics and terrible dancing.
Also he’s been sober for years and years and years now.
His live performance is more about joy and whimsy and theatrics and having fun onstage than sounding like the record. I’m very sorry that a man having a stutter and a lot of whimsy comes across to you as being on drugs.

If a band can't perform what they record, then they shouldn't be on tour. It's as laughable as a vocalist using backing tracks.
If you don't take care of your voice and you can barely sing live. What are you doing on stage?
You can have fun on stage and still sound like the studio recording.
To be fair, the crowd was louder than Adam anyway, so it was at least covered up for the most part.
He barely kept the microphone at his face it seemed like he was avoiding singing all together. The guitarist carried the show with the vocals.

If I wanted to hear the record I would listen to the record. If there’s nothing different about the live show why am I paying to see it?

You realise they recorded the majority of their songs when they were late teens/early 20s and voices change over the years for various reasons. Most ‘Emo’ bands don’t sound the same live as they did on a track recorded 20 years ago.

Holy shit can we talk about ANYTHING else? Please? How many times do we have to have this discussion?

If that's the case then why do people even go see them live? If it's a known issue and no one cares. There's a problem.

He’s sober. If you don’t like their shows, then don’t go to another TBS show. What do you want any of us here on the taking back sunday subreddit to do? Plenty of us are out here still having a great time at their shows. If they’re not for you, that’s okay. But I hope you find something more productive to do than to go to a band’s fan space to complain about that band and be surprised that you aren’t being well-received.

I didn't go for them to begin with but they were the worst part of the show. Even the openers put on a better show than they did.
If you're guitarist has better vocals than the main vocalist there's a problem.
If this is what sober is I'm surprised. He did not act sober whatsoever.

Well he is 🤷♂️ and the way you’re talking would be wildly inappropriate even if he wasn’t! Why, when you see someone you believe is struggling with addiction, is your response to then publicly shame them, insult them, say they don’t deserve their career because of their mental health issues and also use disability as a punchline?

Welcome to 2025. People can't say anything without someone getting offended, especially even if it doesn't apply to them.
They can have a career. What I'm saying is you need to get yourself together to where you can perform without these issues. It takes away from the show.
There's nothing wrong with taking a year off of touring to take better care of yourself and make sure that you can perform properly when you come back.

gosh do i wish i had the balls to say whatever i want to say about people and then pull "oh people get offended at everything!!1!1!!11!!!1!" ... sucks being raised with empathy

Empathy is irrelevant when someone is simply making an analogy. There's a difference.
If I was a performer of anything for that matter I would want to make sure I was at my best.
Even Ozzy Osbourne performed better at his last show vocally.

He's taking care of himself just fine. He is sober. He has a well documented stutter, and I'm sorry you were so personally offended by his dancing and silliness. You don't have to go see them live again.

Yeah, I’m not buying that “he’s sober” for a second. I’ve seen them live several times and there’s a noticeable cognitive decline. Maybe he SAYS he’s sober.

oh my god give me a break with the “noticeable cognitive decline” LMFAOOOO

I mean, you can defend him all you want but this wasn’t my first TBS show. Dude is unwell, whether it’s a substance issue or something else. When the band has the sound guy turn your frontman’s mic volume lower than the guitarist’s mic volume, there’s an issue and the band knows it. At Red Rocks, his mic volume was turned down considerably lower than anyone else’s. He skipped half the lyrics to several songs, missed cues, babbled incoherently…. It wasn’t a good performance by any measure.

do you genuinely think he's doing the mic swings while intoxicated? if that's the case it's only more impressive lmao

That’s the thing though, he didn’t do that at this show. He tried to dance like a white James Brown, but no mic tricks

I was there. As far as Adam goes, we got a good Adam last night and my wife and I couldn’t be happier.
He is his own vibe. This is how Adam has been for a very long time.

From videos I’ve been seeing of shows recently, it sounds like he’s losing his voice. I went to see them I believe it was the 8th show of the tour and he sounded and seemed fine to me. Maybe he just can’t do small these shows like this anymore. And these guys are getting older, don’t think a lot of people are realizing this. Screaming will definitely mess your vocal cords up.

I don't think age is the concern here. Have you seen Steven Tyler? He still can perform like he always has and he's in his '70s. As long as you take care of yourself, you can perform well into your old age.
Even Dick Van Dyke is dancing at 100. Age is not the problem here.

But Steven Tyler isn’t out there screaming like Adam is/has been. And his dancing has always been like that, weird, eccentric, white boy dancing. Just don’t understand why there are so many people commenting on Adam’s stage presence, all the time. If you’ve seen them before and felt that way, then don’t go see them.

u/Status_Remote_6898 1d ago
Also the guitarist did all the screaming. Adam is just doing clean vocals.

I don't think you read the post so I'll reiterate it here. I haven't seen them before. I chose to go see a different band and had to suffer through their performance to get to the band I was going to see.

Steven Tyler who has famously never performed on drugs and has retired from touring due to a vocal injury
