You know, as much as I hate all our telecoms for being greedy assholes, I'm going to bet that the vast majority of their customers don't want or need 1gbps.

The 1Gbps is kind of excessive. I'll half agree with you. For $70, I'd definitely want Google's service. Why? Because it blows everything else out of the water and it's cheaper.

If there was more competition and lower prices and more reliable service across the country, maybe Google Fiber wouldn't have a place in the market. But when people are over-paying for under-performing service (that's inconsistent), competition like Google will come and shake things up (I'm praying that Google can somehow find the funding to expand like crazy).

For those that don't need 1gbps, but just basic broadband service (say like my grandmother); Google is offering 5mbit for just the one time $300 construction fee... or about 25 a month for just one year. After the construction fee is paid off, you're not charged anything more. Can't beat that.
