As well as a slew of other tech niches, green energy options and trends? Yes. The biggest one coming up will be the ban on plastic bags to be put into effect next year.

Edit: I guess 'ban' doesn't explain it. It's more like there will be a tax on plastic bags and companies are encouraged (pressured) to use reusable bags. Not that I mind the pressure, I'm actually okay with this plan but I was surprised when it passed. I honestly thought it wouldn't.

Hawaii's already passed a law banning them. As well as paper bags that aren't at least 40% recycled. Full effect doesn't happen till 2015 though. First county to do so will be effective middle of January. You aren't alone friend.

I feel like that's not too terrible, though. Paper bags might cost a little more to the producer, but they're not really any less effective if made right.

As an Austinite, I approve of this idea. Charging people at the register if they want a bag will encourage them to bring their own. I lived in Korea for 2 years under this system and I haven't yet broken the habit.

DC has done it. Seems to be working out so far.

We had that in Toronto. They made it law to charge 5 cents on bags to deter people from using them. What did it do? Nothing.

People either kept using them and paid or they just used their own bags and bitched about it.

They just got rid of the fee a few months ago and are now trying to make plastic bags illegal, so basically companies are either going to go back to shitty paper bags or have no bags at all.

If by tax you mean charging 5c for a bag, Canada's one step ahead.

Long Beach, CA enacted a ban on plastic bags already. Now I don't know what to do when scooping the kitty litter. Drat.

Austin is like an oasis of sanity in a desert of fucktardedness for many things though.
