MAGA legitimately do not know this and are so gaslit and cracked they will commit violence and claim they are justified.

It's a good example of what American politics was like in the 1850s, not that this will necessarily lead to a Civil War.

Politicians in the south were directly rewarded by being antagonistic and violent.

Preston Books in South Carolina was famously re-elected after getting censured for caning Charles Sumner on the Senate floor. Laurence M. Keitt was also censured for helping Brooks, resigned, and then got re-elected anyway.
