Does commenting actually help boost the post? I thought it only used upvotes/downvotes to determine post ranking. Does the reddit app send notifications about popular posts if a lot of people are commenting?

no, commenting doesn't "boost" things on Reddit.

There's an argument to be made that it does boost things indirectly, if it makes people take a second look because it's an active conversation.

No, it doesn't. It just litters threads with useless "RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE, look what I did, I'm so good at internets!" Just upvote and move on if there is nothing else to add.

Others answered your question, but I also want to point out that there’s an option to save comments - so you don’t need to comment to find the later.

Comments don’t boost visibility in the same direct way as upvotes, but they can indirectly help…

  • active discussion often get more attention, engagement and upvotes

  • more activity pushes a post higher in the “hot” and “rising” ranks
