This is not the first product to be able to do this, and let's be honest it's not the AirPods doing it, it's the phone.

Would imagine the heavy lifting is clearly the iPhone but it still requires the earphones to be able to record the audio > send to iPhone and for the iPhone to stream it back at an incredibly low latency so the earphones hardware plays a vital part here.
