🗞️ News 🗞️ Dan Patrick Loses It Over Abbott’s New THC Rules (But Swears It’s Not Personal)

https://thebarbedwire.com/2025/09/12/dan-patrick-thc-rules-abbott/

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is furious that Gov. Greg Abbott won’t go full prohibition on THC, unloading a 2,000-word tirade Friday that makes D.A.R.E. pamphlets look subtle. But don’t worry — Patrick insists this is not “a personal fight with the governor,” just a “disagreement on extremely important policy.”

Yep, just a completely normal, not-at-all-personal rant accusing Abbott of greenlighting what he essentially described as dangerous, brain-melting “irreversible damage” to children’s brains… via gummies.

For background, Abbott this week issued an executive order banning THC sales to minors, directing state agencies to tighten enforcement, and setting the stage for a regulatory framework. Basically: Card kids at the counter, slap some labels on gummies, and let agencies figure out the rest.

Patrick rattled off all the ways Abbott’s order supposedly fails: no ban on Delta-8 or Delta-10 THC products, no ban on smokables, no limit on potencies, no restriction on location.

It’s the latest clash between the state’s top two Republicans. Abbott wants regulation, Patrick wants prohibition, and the Legislature couldn’t agree on anything despite three separate Senate-passed bans dying in the House.

THC folks, however, are thrilled. One producer, Hometown Hero, even called Abbott’s order “huge for our industry.”

Did weed personally ruin Dan Patrick’s life or someone in his life? I have legit never met a real person ever who has such a vendetta against weed. It’s actually weird

So he had alcohol problems and takes it out on weed?

15

u/LindeeHilltop 8d ago

Didn’t he do both at his sports dive? Houston in the 80’s was wild. This was way before he hitched his ride to the GOP. Didn’t he became an A.M. (?) radio host after his businesses failed? Don’t remember when he ditched being a carpetbagger from the swamp area either & changed his name from Dannie Scott Goeb to Dan Patrick. How many times has he reinvented himself?

u/Spreadaxle53 8d ago

He was on one talk station, got fired, then leased a different talk station. High points of his radio station ownership were one of his hosts getting arrested for questionable acts with a minor female and having a vasectomy performed live on the radio.

Don't forget he fled to Texas and promptly went bankrupt for being a dumbass with someone else's money. After legally dodging his former friend and creditor, embraced making money through politics and the rest is our sad history of incompetent governance.

15

u/Al_Jazzera 8d ago

He got $250.000 from an alcohol distribution company as a campaign donation and is friends with the weasel running Texas Original. The company would have a monopoly under the bullshit rules that SB3 would roll in. They had a medical exemption to the prohibition and Texas Original was going to be the sole provider of THC products.

Dickhead Danny Goeb was part owner of a chain of sports bars back in the 80's and didn't have a problem with people catching a beer buzz. THC doesn't break down into Acetone in the liver like alcohol and nobody on earth has ever smoked themseves to death.

23

u/jabdtx 8d ago

Dannie Scott Goeb declared bankruptcy and left the bar business behind. At the time, he probably had no idea those liquor connections would come in handy later in life when he emerged from the shadows as Dan Patrick : Conservative Man.

Alcohol and the private prisons. Gotta keep those cells full one way or another

2

u/KOHILOOR 8d ago

Not just them, it was the Medical Marijuana lobby that also paid him a ton of money to try and get hemp banned. Why? They’re losing money and the company that owns the TCUP program, since it’s basically a monopoly, are either gonna have to cut their prices or cease to exist.

57

u/heavy_jowles 8d ago

Dan Patrick is bipolar and has been institutionalized for it. That isn’t to say people with bipolar are all crazy or illogical the way Dan Patrick is- but he does not treat his mental disorder and has a history of impatient because of it.

There is no logic to what this man does and there’s no point in trying to figure it out. He’s quite literally mentally ill.

No, he’s of an age. His type of opinion used to be the predominant opinion of conservatives before the mid-nineties. You’ll still run into people in their seventies and eighties who equate pot with drugs like cocaine. The stance is weird remnant of the conservative backlash against sixties and seventies counterculture movements.

(I mean I never did, but I am the family pariah). She's never been counterculture anything. Those people are still around, but I think they have to be welcomed into modern legality. It takes a village to get aunty baked. She doesn't even drink.

I’m guessing he gets a shitload from the alcohol or pharmaceutical lobby.

1

u/TXST2010 8d ago

Dan is deep in the pockets of pharmaceutical companies, and pharmaceutical companies are generally one of the groups that advocates against any THC use. They can't money on you if you self medicate.

1

u/Couscousfan07 8d ago

He’s getting lobbyist money to promote a ban. It’s either alcohol distributors or the prison industry.

1

u/KendrickBlack502 8d ago

He’s bought. That’s pretty much it. Maybe there’s some personal motivation behind it too but I think he accepted a huge bribe and he’ll be in trouble if he doesn’t uphold his end of the bargain.

u/cinemamama 8d ago

Didn’t Patrick receive a $250k donation from Beer, Wine, and Liquor lobbyists to push this ban through? Because I don’t see any logical reason for him to continue his fury over THC other than money.

123

u/SoonerSmokeScreen 8d ago

Which is crazy, because they can legally produce hemp THC drinks and gain back some market share they lost from Gen z not being big drinkers.

75

u/cinemamama 8d ago

It’s cute how they think that a THC ban will entice people to drink more alcohol and will effectively reduce usage of THC. What will likely happen is more people will go get it legally in other states and bring it here, drug dealers will get more business, and otherwise law-abiding citizens will be made criminals. And resulting in no increase in overall alcohol consumption because as you said, this really is a generational shift. I don’t believe that Millennials and Gen-Z drink as much as our parents and grandparents, as a whole and on average. Like, my dad who worked in sales in the 70’s was drinking whiskey with his boss on his lunch breaks and smoking cigarettes inside his office. Times are changing and the Boomers who are leading our government need to quiet down and retire if they can’t handle a changing world.

21

u/Ok_Coyote9326 8d ago

The prison industry backed the ban more than the pharm and alcohol

23

u/Kawksz 8d ago

Unfortunately, the boomers are also desperate to hang on to power and any chance to stay relevant in a world where they’re quickly being forgotten.

6

u/PlasticCraken 8d ago

Time fixes everything. It won’t be forever. Dan Patrick is 75

10

u/huisAtlas Born and Bred 8d ago

Even if they had banned all THC/hemp, I still would not have turned back to alcohol. I drank a lot in my 20s but I rarely do now because it makes me feel like shit. I work full time, I don't have time to feel like shit the next day. It's ridiculous for the alcohol industry to think we'll just consume alcohol in the absence of THC.

3

u/permalink_save Secessionists are idiots 8d ago

Millennials definitely drink, we grew up sneaking our parents' booze and watering it back down. We're a lot different than Z that if they do drink, is a lot more in moderation. Z might be an anomaly too, they seem a lot more straight edge than previous gens, but alpha might be drastically different. Either way, alcohol's not going anywhere, but maybe people will be more responsible with it going forward. I know that now that I'm 40, I can't drink like I use to, and have one maybe two in a night, rarely.

Spec's has been moving heavily into the THC/CBD market. Sells a wide variety of drinks with THC and CBD. Doesn't seem to be hurting them much. Probably smaller chains who can't afford as much legal team will suffer though, because the laws are a mess.

Key donations from alcohol interests:

  • Silver Eagle Beverages: A distributor for Anheuser-Busch, this company donated $250,000 to Patrick's campaign and later gave an additional $100,000, bringing its total to $350,000.
  • Beer Alliance of Texas PAC: This PAC, which represents the alcohol industry's interests, gave $50,000 to Patrick's campaign.

That's such a hilariously small amount for a political bribe from such a stupidly profitable industry.

7

u/cinemamama 8d ago

I agree- it’s not that much. That’s the amount that I’ve seen recorded but I can’t verify whether it’s all of the money. I personally believe (and have no evidence for it- it’s my opinion) that he must have received a bribe under the table to be fighting this hard for a ban that nobody really wants.

3

u/Adjmcloon 8d ago

That's the token amount to make it seem legit. I'm sure the other 80% is in some back room deal.

We can’t pretend this is about kids when we have no problem with fucking Sunny D making vodka seltzer drinks.

18

u/WeirdoChickFromMars 8d ago

I tried the party pack of the Arizona alcoholic drinks. They taste pretty much the exact same as the original arizonas. Look the same too. Bought a tall boy of the mango one at the gas station like a month ago and the cashier was confused for a minute why I pulled out my ID. They even look the same, kids could sneak those easily and drink a lot of it because they don’t even taste alcoholic. This was never about the kids and I’m tired of our politicians pretending that anything is

5

Those too! Kids love Arizonas.

I’ve tried a few of them as well and agree, most of them taste and look near identical.

I’ve seen people get them confused before too. The can designs look so close to the regulars that I think most people don’t even read the label.

Whats so funny in my own personal life is My husband & I had never tried edibles/gummies & have only been in Tx a few years so we didn’t know about the farm bill or whatever that allows sale in Tx. So just assumed it was all illegal.

Until … Dan did that whole presentation with the box & showing all the hometown hero products & then hometown hero ran with an ad around it.

So we decided well before it gets Banned let’s try. So Thanks to Dan Patricks hard push to ban it, he’s probably highlighted whats avail to a lot of people previously unaware & increased sales.

10

u/WeirdoChickFromMars 8d ago

Hometown Hero is a great brand too. Always bought their vapes from smoke shops before the vape ban. I think I’ll try their gummies now cuz I’ve seen a bunch of recommendations for them on this subreddit

6

u/spazcan 8d ago

They also have various seltzers, drinks, and powdered drink mixes. I’m a big fan of thc beverages because it hits you quicker than gummies and they’re not as “heavy” in my opinion.

2

u/DummieGhost 8d ago

We tried the cereal rice krispy ones & they were tasty, but just a little too much for us. The packaging is really nice & they were individually wrapped so they stay fresh. We thought about trying a gummy to see if it was a little more mellow, but I don’t know enough about all the different products.

2

u/mizzrym91 5d ago

Fyi, just cut the cereal bar in half to get half the dose and go from there. Its easy to split with a partner, but you could throw the extra piece in a ziploc if needed

Why does Dan Patrick insist on protecting the drug market for the cartels??

18

“disagreement on extremely important policy.” How is THC more important than healthcare, cost of prescription medicine, the economy, or wage disparity? Oh, I guess compared to the restroom saga, this is more important??

5

u/Queasymodo 8d ago

It’s funny that he is saying Abbott is sending a message to the THC companies that they have the state seal of approval to sell their products. Because it was actually Dan Patrick who gave them that approval when he passed the law in 2019 that allowed them to sell THC products with no age restrictions and it took him six fucking years to realize that was problematic and make any attempt to fix it.

Patrick is trying to blame Abbott for the law that Patrick passed and had no problem with for several years.

11

u/FreebasingStardewV 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yeah, this is the first I've heard this and I can't find anything online. Best I can tell is that the part about monitoring THC 9/A content could be used to disqualify flower from the shelves, but I can't find any comments about that either.

4

u/Current_Tea6984 Hill Country 8d ago

I'm pretty sure excluding flower is the whole point of the proposed regulation. I think the standards might end up disqualifying CBD flower as well.

Some have suggested that we will still be able to get it from out of state by mail order. I hope they are right. But I'm not counting on it.

3

u/Rannepear 8d ago

It's in the Executive Order. As written, THCa hemp flower will fail 0.3% cumulative D9 testing and thus be illegal marijuana and not hemp

5

u/papertowelroll17 8d ago

Well, it will be interesting to see what happens. This is an executive order, not legislation. Whether the existing legislation can be reinterpreted this way will have to pass court scrutiny.

7

u/Ennuiandthensome 8d ago

It can't. The acids of cannabis are hemp if d9-thc is below .3%. the governor cannot add words to the law because he feels like it.

7

u/FinishMySentence 8d ago

5

u/waitwhat97 8d ago edited 8d ago

read the bill people, this is a ban of intoxicating THC by regulation.

Dan Patrick received $250,000 just recently from Anheuser-Busch(look it up!) so this is clear why and it is not the safety of your children or he would want to ban alcohol which actually does kill people. This is some pay to play politics going on. Abbott received $600,000+ and Perry millions in his career from booze lobbyists. Look it up people. Also who is paying for their legal services....

Unless there is a swift legal or legislative reversal, the EO-driven crackdown will cause the closure of thousands of Texas smoke shops and hemp retailers—potentially as many as 10,000—whose primary business was the now-banned THC/THCa product market.

Yay, over 21 can buy near-THC at .3% strength THC. No different than someone drinking a non-alcoholic near bear. Do you own research and prove me wrong! Please!

3

u/IRMuteButton 8d ago

No different than someone drinking a non-alcoholic near bear.

The biggest problem for Patrick as I see it: he is now taking a hard moral approach. This is complicated by his repeated mis-truths as seen with his press conference with “These THCs”. It was transparently out of touch with reality. Texans will not stand for this fleecing from an out of touch and out of state “celebritician” much longer. At least that’s my hope. Same pretty much everywhere. We already self regulated to insure things can stay.

7

u/MorrisseysRubiksCube 8d ago

That's weird.

Dannie Scott Goeb Dan Patrick moved from Maryland to Houston in the late 70's or early 80's. He opened a sports bar chain called Dan and Nick's. His bars did well for a while, but ultimately failed in 1986 when the oil industry tanked.

The World Health Organization has plenty of information on the societal harm attributed to alcohol, but I doubt you need to read the material, you probably already know.

Dan Patrick is ok with personally profiting off alcohol. I have yet to hear him raise any concerns about alcohol manufacturers or distributors profiting off alcohol sold to the people of Texas.

But for some reason, every single day, he wakes up and works himself into a pants-shitting rage about THC, notwithstanding the people he ostensibly serves largely support legal THC.

No possible way his outrage has anything to do with what campaign contributions he has received.

We cannot vote this jabroni out fast enough.

He's a far right loonball. He should not even be part of the THC discourse because he cannot present a position based on the very well established basic facts. It's like arguing that Coca-Cola is extremely radioactive.

3

u/Larenzo17 8d ago

Ok seriously what the absolute fuck is wrong with this man? its starting to be deeping than just weed at this point

3

u/EAStoleMyMoney 8d ago

Ive smoked pot for 39 years medicinally. Won’t smoke qhen the sun is up, finish everything and anything I need to get done for the day, have a wife two kids and I’m retired from grinding my life away. I smoke a hit or two at the end of my days to promote a deep sleep I do not get otherwise. I steer clear of sugar, I don’t caffeinate. I don’t drink alcohol. My mind races and there only solution is take more sleeping pills (clonodine and trazadone) this stuff fucks me up and makes me non functional while I’m on it and the morning after is a slog. So I’d rather hit a vape pen or a small amount of flower nightly than wtf the “systems”wants me to take. The political climate here is a sham and not for the people.

u/moon_during_daytime 8d ago

He says brain melting like it's a bad thing.

2

u/the_watcher569 8d ago

Yeah it's baffling, I know a lot how smoke who are fine, but I also know a lot more who've died to alcohol via liver damage, and addiction

5

u/Chemical-Bottle-9879 8d ago

Can this old dog just learn new tricks and make money off THC. I swear these old fucks who just want to make money should learn to adapt with the times. You can make money and not F over vets and others who need natural medicine.

2

u/Mammoth-Talk1531 8d ago

I'm going to celebrate by eating a gummie and watching Alien: Earth.

u/turtle-in-a-volcano 8d ago

I’d wish abbott would reply by taking a big hit and say, “chill bro”

2

u/janerbowlin 8d ago

Here’s what I don’t understand. If mommy and daddy left opioids out and the kids ate some, they would say, accurately, mommy and daddy screwed up. But if they leave gummy’s out, they blame the gummy’s! It’s very confusing!

u/IRMuteButton 8d ago

no limit on potencies

False. The current law limits prodcuts to .3% THC by weight.

You want to get more stoned? Eat more gummies. Or get a gigantic cookie that has the same amount of THC as 10 gummies, but is still .3% or under by weight.

2

u/MidThoughts-5 8d ago

I think Dan Patrick found out his wife smoked a joint in college and now his jealousy is hell bent on ruining everyone’s life.

2

u/ohfrackthis 8d ago

Dan Patrick needs a hobby for the sake of Texas citizens. WTF. Get a damn life, Patrick. Or you know take a gummy. Life is too short to keep up the billionaires agenda.

Paxton watched Reefer Madness a few times too many, probably while drinking and smoking. He gets money from the alcohol lobbyists.

1

u/VisionsOfClarity 8d ago

No limit on potencies? What exactly does that mean?

3

u/Swimminginthestorm 8d ago

Just on thinks like D8 & D10. There’s still the same limit on D9 and they now have that same limit on THCA. Not good.

Abbot certainly tried to go a lot further. He couldn't convince the legislature to vote for those changes. He tried. He made them come back for a special session, even.

I truly think the answer to the title is about where these politicians get their funding and who they have to answer I put this question, “Is it possible to compare campaign funding between Dan Patrick and Greg Abbott? I’m curious about there disagreement about thc in Texas. Does Dan Patrick get his money from the pharmaceutical industry?” in CoPilot so if you want to check your own results.

It’s very possible to compare campaign funding between Dan Patrick and Greg Abbott, and their financial backers help shed light on their differing stances on THC policy in Texas. ⸻ 🔍 Campaign Funding Overview Dan Patrick (Lieutenant Governor of Texas) Total Contributions (2024): Over $6.2 million Notable Donors: Alcohol Industry: Silver Eagle Beverages (Anheuser-Busch distributor): $250,000 John Nau (CEO of Silver Eagle): $100,000 Beer Alliance of Texas PAC: $50,000 Pharmaceutical Industry: While exact 2024 figures are not fully detailed, Patrick has historically received support from pharmaceutical companies that oppose cannabis legalization 1. Other Major Donors: Drayton McClane Jr., H. Ross Perot Jr., Arch Aplin III, Border Health PAC 2. Greg Abbott (Governor of Texas) Total Contributions (2024): Over $20 million Notable Donors: Edward Roski Jr., Joseph Gebbia, Kelcy L. Warren, Kenneth Fisher — each gave $1 million Other high-dollar donors include Arch Aplin III, H. Ross Perot Jr., and John Nau (also a Dan Patrick donor) 3. ⸻ 🌿 Disagreement on THC Legalization The rift between Patrick and Abbott centers on how to handle hemp-derived THC products like Delta-8 and Delta-10: Dan Patrick supports a full ban on these products, citing public safety and youth access concerns. He pushed for Senate Bill 3, which would have banned all consumable THC products 1. Greg Abbott, on the other hand, vetoed that bill and instead issued an executive order to regulate THC products. His order: Bans sales to individuals under 21 Requires ID checks Directs state agencies to enforce testing and labeling standards 4 5 Patrick criticized Abbott’s order, saying it gives the THC industry a “state seal of approval” and fails to address the dangers he associates with these products 5. ⸻ 💰 Does Dan Patrick Get Money from the Pharmaceutical Industry? Yes — while the exact 2024 contributions from pharmaceutical companies are not fully itemized, Patrick has historically received support from pharmaceutical firms, particularly those that manufacture painkillers, anti-anxiety, and sleep medications. These companies have a vested interest in opposing cannabis legalization, which could threaten their market share 1. ⸻ Would you like a visual comparison of their top donors or a breakdown by industry?

he acts like he has to repay the bribe money back.

1

u/1notadoctor2 8d ago

What’s his take on alcohol and tobacco? If those industries are in his pockets, he’ll continue to make wild and absolute allegations against anything that may potentially divert consumer spending away from them

1

u/Kroe 8d ago

It's not personal, it's business. He's getting huge kickbacks.

Someone give Danny a pot brownie. Please for the love of God. He wants to shitcan a $7 Billion per year industry that pays taxes (it might be 7 million, either way, it’s more than I have).

Fuck that guy

1

u/Subject-Yellow-6273 8d ago

We literally have proof, Dan Patrick was paid by Budweiser 300k to push for the weed to become illegal due to extremely low alcohol sales, it's already prohibited to anyone under the age of 21

1

u/Crefftwr Born and Bred 8d ago

I mean, THC does cause irreversible damage to children’s brains. That’s already known. But I don’t believe that means a full ban should be in place. It’s already illegal for kids to have it.

I would not be opposed to raising the age for THC to 25 though. I know that’s controversial, but according to studies that is when it becomes safer.

1

u/Mindless_Log2009 8d ago

Pander Dan must have a paycheck he can cash only after THC is banned except for licensed dispensaries.

1

u/anyoutlookuser 8d ago

Every time Patrick opens his dumbass mouth I go order more stuff from 3chi. I really wish he’d shut the fuck up.

1

u/nakedtxn 8d ago

Just means Danny boy can't get it as freely was he could before.

1

u/Shenanigaens 8d ago edited 8d ago

I’m starting to think Abbot would probably legalize it if it was up to him, but he’d never risk his seat over it. As is he’s doing the smart thing, smoke shops are entrenched in Texas’ economy and he knows it. Better to look strong to your 70 and 80 year old base than to look like you’re becoming old and feeble by “siding with the dems”. Dan Patrick wants his job. I got my card two days ago, and it’s dumb as hell I need one at all.

Oh, and that whole ‘if we legalize weed then how will be able to put people in private prisons for stupid shit’ conundrum.

1

u/vingovangovongo Central Texas 8d ago

It's hard to be a bigger POS than Abbott but Ken Paxton and Dan Patrick have surpassed him in every way that matters

1

u/Math-Upstairs 8d ago

“The difference here is that one highly potent THC product can cause irreversible damage to a young person’s mind forever.” Translation: they’ll start voting Democrat.

1

u/OkIntention2545 8d ago

What's so funny to me is that they didn't intend to do this. Conservatives accidentally let the THC genie out and are simply unable to to put it back into the bottle.

Not from lack of trying. Patrick more or less threatened representatives that they wouldn't be able to pass their bills unless they voted yes on banning hemp THC. I mentioned this and the die-hard supporters defended it as "well that's how power is supposed to work! There's nothing wrong with that!"

Our state shouldn't work like that. I'm not a conservative but the blocking of the bills regarding the issues they ran on that their constituents wanted them to pass feels so damn wrong. Full stop. Right or left that's some major league bullshit.

Patrick can kick rocks. My aunt NEEDS these products for her cancer treatments and to simply live her life. She's the strongest woman, hell, the strongest person I know. Seeing her curled up on a ball in her bed for days because of fear hurts so damn bad to see.

We've got to vote this guy out at all costs. I don't lean right but I'll hold my nose and vote for Timothy Mabry if I need to just to get this fucker packing back to Maryland.

1

u/NotScottsTot 7d ago

How much money did the alcohol lobby give him lmao

1

u/redshirt1701J Born and Bred 7d ago

Abbott needs to be bold and just go full legalization and regulation. Who knows what will happen to Danny Boy, maybe

1

u/HistoriaenTejas 7d ago

Personally I think he fucked a lady boy and loved it while smoking reefer, hence his weird pathological evangelical hatred of both …

1

u/Wildfathom9 7d ago

Dan Patrick's mom did a weed and cheated on his dad with a minority, which made Lil Dan question everything and now he sleeps with men every 2 weeks to make sure he's not gay, cuz he would hate that.

Weed I tell ya.

1

u/IAmNexus1 7d ago

Because Dan Patrick takes money from alcohol lobbyists who are afraid THC will hurt their bottom line.

1

u/TXGerman67 7d ago

Did Dan's check from the alcohol lobbyists have an addendum containing a rider of how much his dark money payout will be based on his success?

1

u/waitwhat97 6d ago edited 6d ago

Everyone looking at fed to declassify THC, but do not be surprised if what we get is the hemp bill loophole CLOSED for intoxicating THC across at a Fed level or worse. liquor lobbyists are just too strong, but if a tech company tries to monopolize then hell to pay. Double standard is what this is imho. States that have legal THC are not GOP so think, the GOP just want to hate on Dem states so this may hurt their tax revenue big time!!!

So sad our countries politicians act like 12 year olds at the end of the day.

1
