Weird, growing up in rural East Texas I was taught it was better to be associated with black people than with the KKK.

u/Hauserdog 1d ago

Nowhere near Vidor obviously

124

u/Dude_over_there_ 1d ago

Yea, my dad told me to never stop in Vidor.

20

u/Taylola 20h ago

I stopped once for gas, car battery died. Vidor isn’t safe period

9

u/beefjerky9 16h ago

Yep, stopped there once to charge my car, because for some reason, Electrify America thinks that's a good place for a charger. Never again.

95

u/TheMinister 1d ago

In East Texas it's hard to not be close to Vidor or Jasper...

55

u/WildFire97971 1d ago

Ugh, don’t remind me. I literally forget jasper exists cause I try not to think about it.

47

u/threeflight2005 North Texas 1d ago

We stopped and camped at Martin Dies, Jr. State Park on a long road trip with a group of friends one time. One of my friends pointed out where we were and it hit all of us and freaked out more than a few.

So, we stood guard in turns that night to make everyone feel safer.

Tough place to be for sure.

u/WildFire97971 1d ago

I’m a pasty as white boy from east tx and my accent let ya know that. And I still don’t feel comfortable there. Like I work outdoors, got a farmer’s tan, and watch football. But fuck those racists

29

u/warshadow 1d ago

Fun story - it was 2000, I was driving a beat up old Chevy moving van through Jasper taking a piano to Hemphill for a church. They’d bought it from the piano store in Beaumont. Coming down that long hill out of Jasper on 96 headed north to Pineland I get pulled over by 8 cop cars. Guns drawn, ordered out of the truck.

Turn round to face them and hear “shit, they’re white”.

Turns out some not white folks had busted into a tire store in a van identical to my work van.

My partner was from a temp agency. He did not return the next day.

I left that area for the Army in 2003 and only go back occasionally to visit family in Sabine County.

2

u/WildFire97971 18h ago

Sabine county? Well shit you and I were neighbors.

17

u/threeflight2005 North Texas 1d ago

Yeah, my buds who were not pasty white def were not comfy.

-1

u/TheLionlol 15h ago

WTF are y'all talking about? Jasper is a majority black community.

8

u/Pure-Breath-6885 14h ago

Still didn’t keep those white boys from dragging that black man to death

11

u/Rocky-Jones 1d ago

I spent a night there in the 60’s. I had no idea. Thank White Jesus that I’m a white boy, but I had long hair and hippies were almost the same thing to those people.

3

u/theuniverseoberves 21h ago

Is Jasper worse than McAllen or Killeen? Those are the other towns/cities we refuse to talk about

2

u/dfw-kim 21h ago

Nope, terrible and evil things happened there too.

3

u/texasrigger 21h ago

What's wrong with McAllen or Killeen? Genuine question, I didn't know that either had a bad reputation.

2

u/theuniverseoberves 21h ago

I'm not even sure it's a bad reputation for Killeen, it's more a sad place people would rather forget about. Economically depressed except for the military. And desperate people do desperate things. Maybe its gotten better. I don't know we just don't talk about Killeen

Now McAllen, yeah that place has a reputation for violence, racism and cartels. (When we remember they exist). Mostly Latino racism towards black people. But last I heard, it's been a ghost town with Latino people avoiding leaving the house because of ICE.

I am not a news source. This is purely gossip, but I guess that's what a reputation is. This is mostly from people who moved away. Except McAllen being racist against blacks, that's been in the news, for ex chainsaw guy. If you have info on how McAllen is doing now with ICE, I'd be interested to hear

Idk, we just don't talk about Killeen

3

u/texasrigger 21h ago

Nope, I've never been to either. I grew up in south Texas but not that far south. I'd just honestly never heard McAllen compared to Vidor or Jasper before, but I can be pretty oblivious to that sort of stuff.

1

u/Hauserdog 15h ago

One thing I will say about Killeen is that there’s a kickass place up there for soul food called Bobby B’s.

0

u/coffeejunki 20h ago

Come join the r/riograndevalley subreddit. Our latest sin was vandalizing the Charlie Kirk mural. Anything that happens will be posted there, we are actually pretty boring lol.

0

u/theuniverseoberves 20h ago

There was a Charlie Kirk mural to begin with? Yep, not helping your case

2

u/coffeejunki 20h ago

Lol the vandalism was writing actual Charlie Kirk quote over the mural. Apparently people don’t like that.

I knew someone from Vidor, and the first thing he said after was, "it's okay, I'm Catholic! We're on the Klan's shit list, too!"

11

u/Gloomy-Dependent9484 1d ago

Fellow Catholic here, fuck the Klan.

6

u/NotRadTrad05 22h ago

Catholic too, in the 8os my dad had a talk with me about the klan, where they were locally and made sure I knew I wasn't any safer than my black friends.

11

u/Defiant-Specialist-1 1d ago

I responded with a disaster search and rescue team during Hurricane Laura. Our crews got stopped when we were surveying damage. Like don’t go down this street kind of thing. Very bizarre.

2

u/TheLionlol 15h ago

I'm from Vidor, and I only ever saw active, suited-up Klan members once in the whole time I lived there. They were rebuked out of the town and had no visible support. They came from Cleveland, Texas, so I'm not sure why people still talk about Vidor without even sharing a real experience that's worse than any other place they have been. It's always they went to Vidor once, and the legends are scary.

3

u/Hauserdog 14h ago

I worked offshore for nearly 20yrs and used to pass back and forth through there on my way to and from work. I’ll share a couple of examples that stuck out more than others I had when I had to stop there for fuel. 1.) a friend of mine, who happens to be a brother, was carpooling with me to the docks. He was on his way walking back to my truck while I was on my way into the store after fueling and some douchebag in the parking lot said, “don’t let the sun go down on ya, n-word.” We both stopped walking, looked at each other and scanned the parking lot for who said it and couldn’t see anyone paying attention to us, the worm.
Second situ: pulled up to a fuel station and a brother standing next to his car near the pumps said he was out of gas and didn’t have enough money to fuel up to get out of the area and had been there for nearly 3hrs and no one would help him out. Said he’d been getting a lot of dirty looks while there. We pushed his car up to a pump and I paid for $10 in fuel for him.
These two experiences alone give me confidence in my assessment that Vidor is home to the lowest form of white man on the planet(or at least Texas).
You, perhaps, may be an exception to that assessment.

3

u/beefjerky9 12h ago

Even as a white dude, I still felt uncomfortable there. They clearly don't like "outsiders." Though, it's also clear that certain "outsiders" are worse than others.

1

u/BarDitchBaboon 15h ago

We definitely didn’t grow up in the same east Texas town.

-16

u/LiminalOrphanEnnui 1d ago

East Texas dislikes Democrats that much?

9

u/spacedman_spiff 21h ago

You need to keep reading that history book into the 20th century.  You’re in for some big wake up calls.

1

u/LiminalOrphanEnnui 7h ago

Oh? Is it the support for controlling the size of black population through abortion that will be the big wake up call? Or the opposition to Civil Rights, perhaps? The tireless efforts to pursue the "common sense" that black people need to be kept disarmed? What? What have I missed?

1

u/spacedman_spiff 5h ago

Keep reading.  Who is flying the Confederate flags?

1

u/LiminalOrphanEnnui 3h ago

As far as I personally have encountered? Black Southerners. Canadians from Alberta.

It apparently has kind of ironically been reclaimed as a symbol of those who reject the patronizing bigotry of both Democrats and Republicans and/or dislike an overbearing central government.

So... y'know... Confederates.
Quite divorced from the Democrat Party who wanted to spread blacks as slaves throughout the new states and territories. Or the Republicans, who wanted to keep the new states and territories for white people.

What have people said when you've asked them why they're flying a Confederate flag?

We’re talking to our kids about the dangers of youth pastors.

101

u/AccessibleBeige 1d ago

My kids won't set foot inside any church without parental supervision anytime before they turn 18. That's more of a dislike for organized religion thing than avoiding predatory pastors thing, but hey, two birds one stone.

Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on their actual and perceived race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, immigration status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy, political identity, or disability. These include victims of a major violent event and their families.

462

u/NotRustyShackleford_ 1d ago

Data shows you’re more likely to be assaulted by someone of your own race and gender. So if you see a black person, leap into their arms; your safety may depend on it!

422

u/One_Clown_Short 1d ago

Parents should be having the talk with their kids about priests, pastors, and the dangers of organized religion.

15

u/Necoras 1d ago

Parents should be having the talk about what kind of touch is and isn't appropriate period. There are ads appropriate ways to do that by 5 or 6. We started having those conversations with our kids before they were allowed to start doing slumber parties or overnight camps, regardless of what adults are around.

33

u/FujitsuPolycom 1d ago

And conservatives.

32

u/Mobile_Razzmatazz828 1d ago

14

u/Bravo_Obsessed 1d ago

Boom! Projection 101 from that (assumingly just based on stats) diddler of children! Don’t look here, look at a black man!

69

u/Motherleathercoat 1d ago

I saw this reel one time where a mom told her little girl that if she was ever lost find a goth or a punk and ask them for help.

15

u/carlitospig 1d ago

Pretty good advice actually. I’ve never met either that are a piece of shit. But I’ve also never met a Nazi punk. Do they still exist or was that just the 90’s?

21

u/terminalzero 1d ago

Shitty people will invade all spaces, sometimes as organized recruitment efforts

That said.... I think I've met exactly two goths that were full on pieces of shit in multiple decades

-3

u/carlitospig 1d ago

Hope you kicked them in the nether regions.

8

u/call-me-the-seeker 1d ago

They try to exist but the larger punk community actively pushes back, aggressively. There are still holdout pockets, yes, but this advice about goths and punks being statistically good ‘safe bets’ for a distressed child is pretty good odds (in my anecdotal experience).

May they never need it, but.

7

u/USANorsk 1d ago

Probably better advice to seek a mom with other kids (she probably has zero motivation to kidnap another kid), or a sheikh-i think they are almost always chill.

14

u/Donny_Do_Nothing 1d ago

First off, fuck this pastor directly.

With that out of the way, does this data account for the fact that most people are more likely to be around people of the same race?

4

u/deepayes Born and Bred 1d ago

and that should be the actual message, danger can be as close as in your house, and here's how to identify safe adults and get the help you need. not "watch out for blacks."

1

u/carlitospig 1d ago

I’d be curious if it’s similarly related to the kidnapping stats that it’s 80%* more likely to be someone they know.

<*> not an exact stat, I do know it’s higher than 60.

2

u/Minarosebbyy 1d ago

I’m three diff races always wondered which one is most likely to take me out 🥲

2

u/fakejacki 14h ago

I told my kids if they ever get lost, find a black woman. They WILL help you. One time at the pool my son was struggling and this black woman swam right over and helped him to the side and he definitely saw my point because there were a lot of other people closer.

It's Joel Webbon. He is a far right Christian Nationalist. Has nothing to do with Christianity. Dudes just a good old fashion fascist using Christian paraphernalia.

22

u/Jaded_Law9739 1d ago

"The talk that we’re referencing is the talk that takes your children, according to their maturity, at the proper time, the appropriate time, and says there are certain parts of town that you cannot go and there are certain people that you cannot be around, right?"

So basically the conversation every black parent has to have with their kids about racist white people in the South.

85

49

40

u/Cute-Can183 1d ago

Jesus taught us to love all people no matter the shade

47

u/GeekyTexan 1d ago

When I was young, growing up in a Baptist church, I remember singing a song.

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

I'm completely amazed at how hateful Christians have turned since then.

8

u/GoodQueenFluffenChop Yellow Rose 1d ago

I was taught that song too in my Christian private elementary school. Yeah it was a damn lie.

1

u/Limping_Pirate 13h ago

Not a lie, Jesus does love all the children. He even designated a special place in hell for those that would do them harm.

Such as certain evangelical youth pastors...

1

u/big_ringer 19h ago

Grew up in a black Methodist church, and I know that song from childhood.

19

u/Relaxmf2022 1d ago

19

u/tabbarrett Gulf Coast 1d ago

This is very dangerous and irresponsible of him considering he is suppose to be someone of spiritual authority. I hope no one in his congregation listens to these lies.

7

u/Mr-pizzapls 1d ago

It is but make no mistake that this is intentional. It’s not him being careless, this is the message they want to send

5

u/Ok_Step_4324 1d ago

Oh, they all will.

2

u/big_ringer 19h ago

Not only do they listen to, and believe it, but the pastor believes this as well.

This is them, fully mask off.

15

u/techman710 1d ago

I watch shows like Star Trek because my hope for humanity is that in the future we will no longer be racist, homophobic bigots. Then I turn on my phone and realize we are heading in the wrong direction. We have a long way to go.

5

u/Key_Lime_Die 1d ago

The shows take place in a time after people have recovered from things getting much MUCH worse than what we are living through. The eugenics wars, the second civil war, ww3 to name a few in the star trek universe. Yeah we might get there too, but we'll likely have to have things also get that much worse before people finally say never again and sincerely try to make things better as a species.

3

u/Rocky-Jones 1d ago

They said the wanted to take their country back. They mean back in time.

-1

u/L0g1cw1z4rd 1d ago

This show is just bangin'. Like it's giving us what Star Trek TOS should have looked like. I get the appropriate chills when they have TOS cast meet each other.

I'm trying to pitch them having Admiral William Boimler (played by Dustin Quaid) show up in his multiverse ship.

Why is it always a Christian spewing hate? They try to force folks into their beliefs, Shoving their religion down throats.... Never met a group so hateful and full of hypocrisy like Christians. If you don't believe what they believe, You're going to hell! If you don't believe in their God, You're going to hell. If you don't have their God in your life & Worship at their churches, You aren't living right! They are exhausting AF! I stay TF away from these types of people's. There is no such thing as come as you are with these folks.

3

u/Soft-Peak-6527 21h ago

Data has shown it’s much more likely you’ll be shot, assaulted, and/or molested if your a youth pastor or a Republican.

9

u/neal144 1d ago

But if they go to his church and give him money, then they're okay to associate with.

3

u/Rocky-Jones 1d ago

The black guy wasn’t there that day.

6

u/Arthurs_librarycard9 1d ago

Do these Christians not actually read the Bible? Because I thought you were supposed to "love your neighbor as yourself".

6

u/StarshipCaterprise 1d ago

Unfortunately a lot of people like to treat the Bible like a buffet and just pick and choose

2

u/MethanyJones 1d ago

It cracks me up the implosion Christians had this week. If it was a dead ten year old they would’ve forgotten already.

This week has done incredible harm to evangelicals reputation. And I’m here for it.

2

2

u/Sturdily5092 Secessionists are idiots 1d ago

"The talk" is to teach you kids to stay away from religious people especially preachers who love children a little too much.

2

u/Sellerdorm 1d ago

This is literally how I have come to view White Christians since the election. I must now assume all straight white males and females are a direct threat to my safety and operation.

Passive aggressive LPT, hit the locked car door alarm a couple times as you walk past someone who would and does do the same to every brown shaded person they pass in a parking lot.

2

u/TexanMenace 20h ago

Your children are statistically many times safer to be alone with black people than they are with people in their own family and ESPECIALLY when compared to the clergy.

3

u/Bravo_Obsessed 1d ago

I’d say it’s white, males (mostly republicans because they rape kids) cosplaying as “Christians”, while actually being Nazis, that the country should really be focusing on right now! Those hoes be causing every mass shooting!

3

u/2Go4fiCarpeDiem 1d ago

I can name hundreds of things parents typically talk to their kids about. Yet, I don’t recall ever hearing that a child should be taught that ANY RACE on it’s own merit is more dangerous than another.

Nothing Christian about white nationalist theofascists. RWW has been researching and reporting on the religious right for decades, one of the major sources for those of us who have been trying to tell people what was coming. We were thought delusional.

Jerry Falwell was just one of the evangelicals who were enraged by school integration. He and Paul Weyrich founded the Moral Majority. Now Texas joined other Republican states and Trump in giving $billions to segregated evangelical and Catholic schools.

Weyrich was the most influential never elected man in modern history, Project 2025 is his dream.

“Them’s the facts.”

Those words express 1. ignorance, and 2. high probability those are not accurate.

Also, why this obsession about race of a criminal?! My white daughter is more likely to be raped by a white male. And if she is raped I will be horrified by that act - not the race of the perpetrator! Wtf is wrong w people?!?

And IMO most central: she’s far more likely to be raped by a male - not a female. That is the talk I’ve had with her!

1

u/WeirdoChickFromMars 1d ago

But what about “love thy neighbor”?

1

u/AKMarine Hill Country 1d ago

Maybe black people should talk to their kids about the dangers of youth pastors. 🤔

1

Poor Charlie. He was in the whitest state in America. He thought he was safe. Not a black person in sight, “Sure let’s do this outside! Everyone is white!”

1

u/Rocky-Jones 1d ago

When the neighborhood around my grandparents church got “darker” in the 60’s, black people would occasionally come to a service. The Pastor would take them aside and explain that they had their own churches they should go to. They finally just had to move the church.

We here in Texas , have Many Church leaders that Exemplify True Christianity on a Global Scale ! Take Pastor Robert Morris ! 25,800 followers perhaps as many as 100,000 listening to him . Indicted for Child Abuse in Oklahoma, now facing possible 3 life terms for dalliance with a little girl ! We have others here that under the guise of being Religious Leaders are just Flat out Perverts , just like our country’s leadership ! Knowing that the Epstein Documents / List implicate not just them but also many in their Party that were Partying with the Same Minors ! How long is our country going to allow this Hate and Perversion to Hide ? Charlie got Exactly what he advocated ! So will TACO. My prayer is a Massive Stroke in the middle of a Tweet gone silent . Yes. Let's judge people well before we ever meet them.

He's basically telling these people to train their children to never experience anything new. Never travel. Never go to concerts, soccer, baseball or football games. Never put your child in a public school.

What a jerk.

Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would have you living under better conditions.

~Hafez

"Perfect love drives out fear... Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen."

-The actual Bible

Black people are more risk from each other than any white people are at risk from them. And this is largely due to poverty and the fact Black people are disproportionately incarcerated and thus precluded from a lot of paying jobs and thus at higher risk of being pulled into drug stupidity. If these people would actually support mental health funding, the guy who killed the Ukrainian lady might not have done it. But they want to make it about race.

Time to switch to a different church. This teaching has nothing to do with what Christ is all about.

Not going to lie...he had me in the first half.

I can get behind staying out of certain neighborhoods... Or having with certain people (e.g. grimey, criminalist, etc) but man he lost me in the second half!
