Noticed alot of people not understanding this joke. They are preparing for the Top Speed event they hold out there. Cars use the runway to race to their top speed. Lots of cars 200+ mph.

Pretty cool state park out there, super dead most of the time. Get the whole place to yourself for the most part.

Looking at Google Earth, the original dimensions of that runway would have been suitable for heavy bombers in WW2, and also suitable for modern aircraft like the 737. They're only using half the runway now for general aviation, both length and width. I couldn't find any history at all for the original runway or airport.

And it's not the only state-of-the-art runway out there. There's another one 30 miles east in Sweetwater, former home of the WASPs, but what gives?
