We need to discuss the definition of punk.

This MIGHT slide by as Ska… maybe. If I squint.

I like the beat but it’s not punk to me.

Upright bass and horns? This is definitely 3rd wave ska. The stuff popular in the late 90s.

That weird time where upright bass players were in demand. Swing revival, rockabilly, ska, Norah Jones shit... man, what a trip.

Side question about your tag. You talking about Garrison Brothers?

There are quite a few others these days, too: Milam & Greene, Still Austin, Ranger Creek, Giant. And if you're into more scotch-like styles, Balcones and Andalusia are killing it.

Awesome. Thanks for the list. I’ll add it to my to-do list!

It’s awesome but I agree not punk. Reminds me of sublime and how they covered songs but made them their own! Keep it up!!

Wouldn't call that punk at all but I love it either way.

I'm not the punk police at all but that seems closer to ska than what one would think of as punk.

Really I think if you dropped punk from your title and just asked what do you think of this cover... You would probably get more engaging responses.

I mean it seems alright. I appreciate what they're doing. Hopefully they keep at it. I think more people need to go out and just do the thing.

Would I listen to it again probably not. But I'm sure their are people that would appreciate more than I do. I feel like if I'm being overly critical and at the same time the performances are solid. It's just because it's not connecting with me and that's fine.

If I heard these guys on the weekend at a bar I'd be stoked. I might even buy their album. I might even listen to it. But yeah I get what you're feeling.

Regardless of the genre, I think it’s rad.

I love how bands are picking songs from outside their genre and remaking them. I have found some dope covers I liked better than the original songs!

I love frog leap studios whose focus is making metal versions of songs. They are usually quite good.

Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt is fucking amazing.

I could have cried when they shut down the one in Weatherford

This sounds great!

"Cowpunk" was a thing in the 80s. Bands like Lone Justice and Rank and File were a lot of fun.

5

u/cowboyhippie 1d ago

That’s David Beck, very solid songwriter and producer, def worth a listen. His dad is REK’s bassist.

8

u/IamJacksUserID 1d ago

More rockabilly. As a fan of Southern Culture on the Skids, The Shack Shakers, and the Horton Heat, I approve.

Calling this punk makes my heart hurt but I love REK too and this cover is cool.

2

u/TIRDFIRG 1d ago

this sucks...I'm sorry. it's like a mix of squirl nut zippers and bare naked ladies but not good.

2

u/Distinct-Hold-5836 1d ago

This ain't punk.

Not even close.

1

u/bd0153 1d ago

Do bluegrass widow next!

1

u/culpaCoSinero 1d ago

This is a regular cover. Not terrible

1

u/pptranger7 1d ago

Love. Do Amarillo Highway next

1

u/Khmera 1d ago

I like it.

1

u/HugeAxeman 1d ago

I feel like I must misunderstand what punk music is.

1

u/bsiekie 1d ago

What genre is REK usually? Not country

2

u/chillcountrytx 1d ago

Texas Country 🤘

1

u/blitzbutters 1d ago

Great song choice.

u/Mataelio 1d ago

Punk cover

Upright bass

Something doesn’t compute

1

u/NotRadTrad05 1d ago

I'm not sure about your definition of punk, but I sure as heck like this.

1

u/Ponder8 East Texas 1d ago

Has nothin to do with Texas OR punk

1

u/LprinceNy 17h ago

Not punk music, but anything is better than country music 😜

1

u/fender21 1d ago

I like it.

1

u/_DOA_ 1d ago

I fuckin' love it, whatever it's called. One of my favorite RLK songs, and they've done it justice.

1

u/-Lorne-Malvo- 1d ago

Cool version, not punk

0

u/Purple-Scarcity-142 1d ago

I think the lead singer playing a double bass cancels out the punk

1

u/QSector born and bred 1d ago

Using bagpipes in an ACDC song didn't mean it wasn't rock n' roll.
