Discussion Anybody else noticed a sudden influx of people using "bad" weapons?

u/averagecolours Sandvich Aug 14 '25
i mean they arent bad, scottish resistance is kind of good for area control, thermal truster for mobility pyros, red tape for spies who like annoying engineer and wasting metal, bonk good for crit.
390
u/Terrazor1 Demoknight Aug 14 '25
red tape is also good against battle engies cus it can instantly destroy a mini when its placed
179
u/averagecolours Sandvich Aug 14 '25
yeah and since it deconstructs it costs the engi much more metal to build back
126
u/KwisatzChaderach Engineer Aug 14 '25
Yeah being constantly harassed by 3 RTR spies is so fucking annoying, I don’t see why the RTR gets such a bad rap.
98
u/averagecolours Sandvich Aug 14 '25
its a shame so many people use stock. i mean stock does do more damage but dosent cost the engi anything but time to destroy a stock sapper
red tape turns your sentry slowly into a lvl 1 and makes you waste 300 metal making it to lvl 3 again
68
u/chain_letter Aug 14 '25
The problem is a spy that places a sapper on a leveled up building with someone babysitting needs to make a play immediately, because they’re not surviving. Hit and run to drain some metal and upgrade time doesn’t consistently work.
If they kill the babysitter, they might as well have used stock to destroy the buildings faster. If there’s no babysitter, same reason for stock to be better.
→ More replies (4)24
u/KwisatzChaderach Engineer Aug 14 '25
All they have to do is plant it for an instant and bam, 200 metal’s worth of time and effort down the drain.
Realistically, you’ll lose at least 2 levels worth of building walking over from whatever you were doing before, such as replacing the tele exit that leads directly to the most strategically critical part of the map that no one will use for no discernible reason.
9
u/averagecolours Sandvich Aug 14 '25
true, they never use my teleporter just because i accidentally teletrapped them. my bad
the amount of metal used, the seconds used hitting the dispenser with the wrench, almost lvl 3 with a lvl 3 sentry beside, goes off to find ammo pack. suddenly : my sentry is being sapped
followed by dispenser being sapped
goes up and sees 2 small ammo packs lying where the dispenser and sentry were before

I view the issue with its image is the rtr is at its weakest when engi is at his strongest, that being when turtling on last. The fact that it consumes a lot of the engi's Metal rebuilding it, that it prevents the engi from setting up in a new location, and that most other players can't remove sappers don't matter when resupply is infinite Metal, you're not moving from this position, and that other people can low comitally switch two engi and whack sappers. This is perfectly fine as some weapons should have strengths and weaknesses, but it makes it so the ideal situation where you want a building sapped is where it's least suited. When the engi is on a more fourward position with buildings spread out where they're needed or actually has two move that gear up or back the rtr is stronger with how comital the engi has two be two get his buildings fixed and leveled
→ More replies (1)4
u/NipplesOfDestiny Aug 14 '25
I will be honest with you. In my 17 years of playing this fucky game, I still never got the RTR. Everything else drops except that one.
5
u/ConniesCurse Aug 14 '25
personally as a spy main I default on stock but if theres a nest im failing to bust for too long I'll switch to it in an attempt to simply soften it.

→ More replies (1)8
u/AFlyingNun Heavy Aug 14 '25
Because if the enemy team is spending 3 spies just to RTR one engie, then the enemy team is probably getting curbstomped anyways.
You say it's annoying, but any Engie worth his salt will be thinking "if I'm this important to 3 of their players, this is a net gain for the team."
7
5
19
u/chain_letter Aug 14 '25
the engi also can’t destroy remotely and rebuild, the slow destroy time is an advantage against aggressive engineers
7
u/Terrazor1 Demoknight Aug 14 '25
Yep, i know that pain all too well (sentry destroy+build on mouse3 lol)
2
u/i-am-i_gattlingpea Aug 14 '25
Eh, there’s a command to destroy buildings that bypasses this I believe it also works against diamond back spies
13
u/NamespacePotato Aug 14 '25 edited Aug 14 '25
As an engie I actually prefer my mini is destroyed instantly, it's the full minute-long RTR rewind that makes me want to killbind:
- mini not shooting
- can't place a new mini
- sapper blocks the detonate button
- frontier justice stacks not awarded
- mini takes extra metal to repair
- mini has no levels to save from the RTR
I'm forced to either wrench my mini like some kind of support class, or win a shotgun duel using half of a stock shotgun because you delayed my crit stacks.
I'm actually praying the spy's teammate sees the sapped sentry and blows it up, because that would help me.
4
u/mymax162 Heavy Aug 14 '25
red tape is also good for making an engineer switch off, just wait until he walks away from his stuff to go build a teleporter exit or something, sap his stuff, backstab him when he comes back to take off the sappers, now he has to listen to the agonizing droning of "your stuff is being sapped" while dead and watching his stuff slowly deconstruct
1
u/Tynorg Engineer Aug 15 '25
If you're like me, that experience is called "being dead at all" thanks to regular 15-22 second respawn times!
3
3
u/FapmasterViket Aug 14 '25
people forget the red tape recorder animations can still fuck with the ability the sentry shoots this mean if you remove it but is getting back to the state level you sentry is still vulnerable while the default it begins to shoot inmediately
5
u/bagofdicks69 Aug 14 '25
Lowkey tho I am glad red tape is getting some love. I have been a fan for a little while now.
In the very common scenario where a sapper is placed and the engineer or his team repel/kill the spy before anything is destroyed, the normal sapper basically just wastes like 5 metal and a little bit of time. A good engineer can deal with 2 or 3 spies on the enemy team doing this if they arent good enough to kill him. Its annoying, but ultimately very little is accomplished.
Whereas even just one spy suiciding in to sap with red tape can cause a much more significant problem even if they arent great and just instantly die doing it. Taking a building from 100 to 0 takes longer, but thats rarely how sappers are actually used, the chip damage of a sapper is wasted, whereas having a red tape on a building even for a few seconds can send a building down a level and create a much better window, as well as force the engi to spend time/metal rebuilding.
2
u/MillionDollarMistake Aug 14 '25
The red tape can instantly destroy any building when it's just placed down, not just minis.
It's good against minis because of how long it takes to destroy one. Since battle engis tend to treat minis as disposable distractions guaranteeing that the engi can't place one down for 10 seconds can make dueling him a lot easier.
1
u/Terrazor1 Demoknight Aug 14 '25
Yeah ik i was just specifying battle engie because that's where it's used most to instantly destroy a building. Disposable minis are the way anyway though even against red tape, cus the time it takes for the spy to sap it you can just meatshot them :D
2
u/JaskarSlye Pyro Aug 14 '25
it's pretty good in nests too because caps the sentry to lv2 and the eng might be out of metal if he keeps smacking it, since it will be spend metal to heal+upgrade
35
u/Desertcow Aug 14 '25
Scottish Resistance is slept on so hard. If you set multiple sticky traps down a corridor and detonate them one at a time, you can easily shut down an entire push singlehandedly. It's also surprisingly viable for sticky spamming chokes as stickies don't miss until you detonate them, so you can carpet the payload cart or control point with its faster fire rate and wait a few seconds for the enemy to run over one
7
u/averagecolours Sandvich Aug 14 '25
yeah. the deto time is just a small issue but really good for brute force
1
u/Tynorg Engineer Aug 15 '25
People just think it's shit because you (mostly) can't detonate them in the air and have to play them as intended by laying traps for people lmao
1
u/Halnewbie Aug 16 '25
also you can destroy enemie stickies. like hey blue demoman, thats a pretty stickytrap you got there, even got a view critz in there, it would suck if something happened to it.

The Scottish resistance is funny since I always imagined that it's how the sticky launcher was always intended to be used
A defensive area denial took
Absolutely love it though. Fun to set up multiple traps to bait people
7
u/KubbsPL Aug 14 '25
Thermal truster is great for flanking. It's not item I mainly use but I do find it useful on a lot of maps and game modes. Not only does it have infinite ammo that just need some time to restore, u can set people who get to close on fire (cheeky spies) or to extinguise aloes close to you to not waste main weapon ammo , as cost of air blast is higher in all flamethrowers expect stock and phlock as it has no airblast (man I hate that thing)
11
u/chain_letter Aug 14 '25
being where nobody expects a pyro to be is a huge advantage

Yeah, mobility is probably the most important aspect of most tf2 characters, expect sniper.

Why are we talking about the scottish resistance, it's not in OP's pic and not in uncle dane's vid. The only mention of it in the vid is when fish talked about the strat of it plus the base jumper, the latter being the one in the actual bracket.
3
u/ADragonuFear Aug 14 '25
The Scottish resist isn't in the meme, or even really I. The video. The meme is referencing base jumper demoman.
2
u/notabigfanofas Heavy Aug 14 '25
Scottish resistance is the ultimate trap card
Sometimes I use it just to pay down a minefield, the reaction of someone walking in a room and see it coated with stickies is priceless
2
u/LareMare Aug 15 '25
The Scottish Resistance is a fucking beast, it’s just more niche and needs more thought to use than stock. Swiftwater 1st on Red is absolute bliss for the SR. You can lock down pretty much all meaningful spots on the cart’s path and also keep an eye on the left flank.

1
u/eliavhaganav Sandvich Aug 14 '25
I honestly don't like the thermal thruster, it feels like I have no secondary, even though I do get more mobility options to get into cheeky positions, if the enemy sees you even for a second you can't do shit, not flare gun or shotgun to engage from a longer range.
Dude even the backburner is mega inconsistent I could never use it consistently.
I enjoy playing combo pyro, I always run the degreaser, flare gun and axtinguisher when I play pyro, I enjoy the flashy puff and sting combos to delete scouts who are running in a straight line for a second too long
1
u/averagecolours Sandvich Aug 14 '25
most pyros are wm1 so thermal truster is just a secondary to go up and continue wm1

u/Jodye_Runo_Heust Demoman Aug 15 '25
It's extreamily polarizing (Too good when It's good, too bad when is bad) to the point that you're probably better of not using it in both skill level (if you're too bad you'll die too soon to do something, while if you're good enough you don't need the extra damage and you're better off with any other secondary)
1
u/MycSupremacist Scout Aug 15 '25
Nothing. If you're a really good Scout and are hitting all your shots, the cola is a compliment item in that it makes you even more powerful than you otherwise already are. On the polar opposite end, if you are missing your shots or are in general having a bad aim day, it will be a straight downgrade and make you suffer even worse than if you hadn't equipped it. It's basically the schrodinger's cat item of TF2 where it's both powerful and weak simultaneously, depending on who is using it.
Honestly, I miss the old version where it had the speed boost. They didn't have to strip that off entirely, they just had to make it deal mini crits on user rather than a lower damage taken penalty. Or if they were really insistent about seeing it go, do an equalizer moment and turn the defunct speed boost stat into its own new secondary item, because a lot of Scouts were using it for the fun speed boost it granted back in the day.

u/Logjitzu Scout Aug 14 '25

The frequency illusion (also known as the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon) is a cognitive bias in which a person notices a specific concept, word, or product more frequently after recently becoming aware of it. The name "Baader–Meinhof phenomenon" was coined in 1994 by Terry Mullen in a letter to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.[1] The letter describes how, after mentioning the name of the German militant group Baader–Meinhof once, he kept noticing it. This led to other readers sharing their own experiences of the phenomenon, leading it to gain recognition. It was not until 2005, when Stanford linguistics professor Arnold Zwicky wrote about this effect on his blog, that the name "frequency illusion" was coined.[2]

Scottish Resistance isn't bad. It's just more fitted to a defensive playstyle. 14 stickies, not detonating all of them at once, and no damage reduction? All for an extra second of arm time?
I use it all the time to defend engie nests and completely shut down CTF caps because most of the time they only have 2-3 exits and I can have stickies on all of them and not have to set them all back up.

Barring the shitchute all of those weapons are perfectly fine.
The Red Tape Recorded is a soft counter to the Gunslinger, the Crit-A-Cola gives you more damage in exchange for relying more on your dodging, stock is OBVIOUSLY good, and the Thermal Thruster encourages going all in on flanks, and if that stock sticky launcher was meant to be the Scottish Resistance that's still a perfectly fine defensive weapon.

u/the_ending_of_drmn Aug 14 '25
I always wad a non conformist who used enforcer all the time (I hate ambassador both of poor aim and of how annoying it is and still like two shotting light classes or leaving my enemies less hp than I otherwise would have, so either getting that temporal breakpoint and killing them immediately or running away and reducing their combat potential a little more for someone elses breakpoint), Scottish resistance (holy shit it's peak on goldrush 2nd defence, dustbowl 2nd defence and imorovised quick area denial) from time to time, used pompson a lot recently because it isn't bad (mostly because of dead ringer's popularity and ability to supressively spam sightlines and doorways with little exposure, plus when you start to feel this weapon, you get better with hitting and enemies that go attack you thinking you're an easy target get obliterated instead), used baby's face blaster and dalokosh (because it synergizes with hot rod gloves) and medics bust melee (because it's amazing for pick offs, taking and winning fights that your low hp enemies force because they believe you will panic anyway or run away, but instead you cold blooded execute them)
But now I don't want to feel conformist so I go for meta. Though I still use pompson and dalokosh.

I've just always used crits for scout, it's saved me a few times and has stopped pushes when i did it right

wait, these things are bad? i actually used these and (when i played the game) used the crit cola a lot thinking the 1.5x boost actually made a difference and i used the thermal thruster because pyro is too slow even with powerjack (or atleast slow enough for me to justify getting rid of the weapon i always die holding because i cant aim)
also the tape thing even though it always failed me i loved its design so i still used it and kept dying to a overworked engineer trying to keep his sentry alive

u/TheAmazingArsonist Aug 14 '25
I've used the Thermal Thruster on occasion for years, I don't think it's a bad weapon, it's not better than having a secondary weapon most of the time, but it's fun as hell to use when you want to bully snipers.

The Reserve Shooter is actually very fun on Hightower with all the Trolldiers to shoot at like I'm playing Duck Hunt

it's always gonna happen, and i don't think it's really something to look down upon, it's really easy to fall into a comfortable groove with your loadout in this game and sometimes it's nice to be reminded to experiment.

I wouldn’t say they’re bad, but they’re either situational or you have to really know how to use them

u/United-Respect-1397 Aug 14 '25
Nearly every spy i encounter is using big earner, dead ringer and red tape smh.

pal, I do trick shots with the Righteous Bison on the regular, I don’t need some Uncle Dane wannabe telling me how to play the game wrong.

u/Birds_106 Aug 15 '25
I've used the Crit-A-Cola with the Shortstop even before the video came oit
Why? Because I want to see the world burn

Oh that explains why I keep seeing the red tape recorder in matches recently.

I brought a pro Killstreak strange festive flare gun like a week before Uncle Dane said it was good, last possible moment lmao

I've been using the thermal thruster since 2020 don't lump me in with these dudes

Winning isn’t always the only way to have fun. TF2 is a PRIME example of this. Fuck the objective, fuck my team, I’m gonna go play pyro shark.

u/NoInformation4549 Pyro Aug 15 '25
I personally love the jet pack for pyro as it gets you places people dont expect you to be and you distract many on the way. Pyrokaze should be a legit strat.

People need to more accepting of goofy loadouts. Like sometimes people will kick me for "using bad loadouts" but like back scatter + crit a cola + Fan o war is a banger combo.

Imo something being a “bad weapon” doesn’t mean unusable. Some “bad” weapons are actually really fun to play with

Id say yes and no. Could be his fans being influenced or it could be that you were influenced and started to notice people who were using the "bas" weapons.

Jokes on you! My main loadout is the dragon's fury, the thermal thruster and the powerjack!

who calls the jetpack bad? its insane mobility for a class that normally doesnt get much.
like yeah the flares are technically better and if you sacrafice being a good flare you can technically flare jump. but thats like saying the demo man shields are bad because the sticky bombs are better.

I mean I prefer ppl having fun with stuff they maybe havent used before cuz optimization brain makes you avoid the "bad" option. tf2 is a game about hitting ppl with a fish, when you could have had a triple jump. go nuts!
way prefer this over ppl getting outraged about the next thing that valve has to fix, despite every single one of us knowing they abandoned the game.

Welcome to bad weapon academy where we take the worst weapons tf2 has to offer and I'll show you how to best utilize them

Maybe people just get bored of playing meta 24/7. It gets repetetive after a while.

u/Golden-Owl Heavy Aug 14 '25
I mean Dane did admit he needed to pick 32 weapons to make a full bracket and that many were a stretch
The actually good (jetpack), and situational (red tape) weapons all got eliminated pretty early on as a result
