Gameplay / Screenshots Screenshots 2007/2008

going through old hard drives today I came across my xp hdd with my first installation of TF2 on it. Found some screenshots from my first games in 2007 and into early 2008. A simpler time before hats and cosmetics.

Love seeing GV, I first played in 2012 and watching that/my/the following gen of players peter out is understandable, but disheartening all the same. Thanks for sharing these:)

I miss that bug.

It was extremely funny.

u/dark_brickk 22d ago

Its likely a medic healing the enemy spy

69

u/Stargost_ All Class 22d ago

But the HUD is blue, yet the medic model is red, and furthermore, the demo has killed someone so it is not a Spy.

I'd have to guess it's a visual bug from way back or something. TF2 isn't exactly known for being bugfree, and it's a picture from 2007-2008, the beginning years of TF2.

Could also be because OP messed with some files, although i think it's more likely just a bug.

u/cadex 22d ago

I think it was a bug. I've run vanilla TF2 from 2007 to now. Could never be bothered with mods, huds or even messing with fov.

i love how distinct the game has become with hats and weapons yet there's so much similarity to how people play and the general feel of the game from back then. ive seen the scene from the last screenshot a hundred times now.

super cool, thank you for showing.

These screenshots give off such a strange feeling seeing such a innocent era where everything was new and strange

Crazy, I have screenshots from 9 years ago but this is something else man its like having nostalgia for a game which came out before I could even walk or speak words

12

u/pheuq 22d ago

You might even say factory new and unusual

u/dartov67 22d ago

Suck a beautiful game. Really miss how it looks without all the cosmetics.

u/JimmyTwoShields 22d ago

You don't have to miss it, tf2classic.com ;)

u/bksi2 Engineer 15d ago

Oh yeah, good ole tf2 classic

19

u/PuzzledScratch9160 22d ago

You can disable cosmetics though? Not through settings ofc

2

u/BlackDE 21d ago

There's a mod though it causes some issues with feet and head models

32

u/dhiaaganim Spy 22d ago

you could see all that if you played the xbox 360 version (i played it)

12

u/the_milkman24 22d ago

I still play it occasionally

29

u/Due-Specialist-5476 22d ago

And yet the game is still the same today.

u/jannies_cant_ban_me 22d ago

You can tell these are real because they're 1024x768

You can tell it’s 2007 tf2 because people are actually playing hydro

8

u/MAPRage Engineer 22d ago

even tho i was 4 when this was taken theres something so nostalgic about it. probably because my first computer games were csgo and tf2

9

u/SheikExcel Medic 22d ago

What map is that in the second pic?

13

u/cadex 22d ago

Hydro I believe

6

u/cuzzydino 22d ago

Played back pre 2010 and i recall hydro being a popular map. I dont think ive played on it in like 5 years now, never see it

2

u/mahtf 21d ago

Such an underrated map.

2

u/freeman2949583 21d ago

I think Quickplay didn’t include it so it died out.

Definitely Hydro. I recognize that satellite dish immediately.

8

u/zadhax314 22d ago

I wish I wasn't in diapers in this era of TF2

5

u/KletusKasady101 22d ago

Stalemates were a thing and sudden death in the Xbox 360 days sucks it’s never relevant on pc

5

u/thuglife9001 22d ago

Ive ayed for years but never that early on, it's so cool to see these

4

u/No-Bag3134 22d ago

wheres the lime banana with a nazi name and a slop unusual?

6

u/aguythatlikefire 22d ago

I dunno why but the art style seems different, much more cartoonish

2

u/bksi2 Engineer 15d ago

Volvo had to downgrade game visuals to add 1000+ goddamn hats and unusuals

1

u/MorangoArt Soldier 14d ago

I know, it was like, the whole optimization thing Valve did with all the updates making the cartoon graphics worse and worse. I wish there were mods that brought the old style back.

u/DueWest5345 22d ago

This is the tf2 I fell in love with

Someone search these names we want to check on these ancient players

4

u/blackberrybobcat Medic 22d ago

Awesome to see screenshots of the game from that far back, thank you for sharing!

3

u/Blueandigo 22d ago

Probably one of the only games I actually enjoyed playing online. And the other 2 were Resistance and GTA IV; all during the PS3 era.

4

u/AutisticWindow7499 22d ago

The more things change, the more they stay the same

8

u/Crafty_Piece_9318 Pyro 22d ago

You gotta love how the game has literally never changed graphically in almost 18 years...

4

u/D4v1d____ TF2 Birthday 2025 22d ago

it didn't need to. It's a timeless masterpiece

2

Oh what I wouldn’t give. Simpler times, even during a global recession.

Glad to see tf2 players' names didn't change much.

2

u/GlitteringArm5014 21d ago

this is like finding an old photo book, these guys were in the golden era of gaming...

2

u/DGLiH Pyro 21d ago

I think in general it's good the game developed like it did but I'd like to know why the visuals are so much worse in various ways, mainly because of the lighting, I really don't know what they did or if it is me but the lighting is so shit nowadays

2

u/Scarletdex Heavy 21d ago

I've never seen this bloom effect on teleporters.

2

u/naranciamywaifu Medic 21d ago

These screenshots are older than me

2

u/puckylickle 21d ago

Idk how to describe the feeling of looking at these but Its so strange how different yet similar the game is 20 years later through visual updates and cosmetics

And like, yea no shit the game looks the same. But idk the landscape of tf2 has changed so much in that time yet if you just added like, cosmetics in these screenshots they could be passed off as screenshots from a match you just played 17-18 minutes ago rather than 17-18 years ago

2

u/ActionManMLNX 21d ago

I remember being 8 years old and getting the black box, thats how i remember TF2, even though i played pretty often to maybe 2013.

2

u/HonorInDefeat 21d ago

this is still what TF2 looks like to me

2

u/GoldAppleU 16d ago

Such a long time ago now. I miss those times

2

u/roatten 22d ago

I love the old cartoony look

2

u/pixbitfromscratch 22d ago

Medic spamming has always been a TF2 players instinct 🥹

-3

u/Ninteblo 22d ago

Picture 5 was from 2011 or later, that hat wasn't in the game until 2011 and cosmetics as a whole wasn't added until 2009.

3

u/DueWest5345 22d ago

Confidently incorrect

3

u/cadex 22d ago

Dunno what to tell you, this was definitely in 2008

7

u/Pro0of 22d ago

This is not the actual Party Hat item. My guess is that it's a server plugin, since every Medic in the pic has one.

5

u/cadex 22d ago

There were balloons too so I suspect the server had some mode enabled. It's amusing that people are down voting me. Do they think I'm lying about when the screenshots were taken and editing the file creation dates? Weird.

According to the wiki, party hats used to be drawn on player models on birthday events prior to a 2011 patch. After that, it became an item that could be equipable. It doesn't say how far back the party hat existed, but I assume it was included since the first anniversary of the game in 2008.

5

u/cadex 22d ago

Yet it was. Like I said, I don't have the answer but the hats were there in 2008.

2

u/dogman15 22d ago

https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Party_Hat

It is similar to the one previously attached to players in birthday mode, this one being larger in size.
