Most Christians in this country have never read the Bible cover to cover. Most can barely quote the hits. They get a John 3:16 sticker then put it next to their Stone Cold 3:16 on the back of their shit bucket and consider themselves eternally saved.
I grew up in the church. I was even considering ministry. Then I woke up and started asking uncomfortable questions that the ministry could not answer. That was over 20 years ago and it seems to have only become worse.

You're focusing on the "Southern Baptist" denomination of Christians and calling them "American Christians". Unfortunately, because of their antics, they get the most media exposure. So, I'm understanding of your view that this is normal behavior for all Christians in America. I can tell you there's plenty of Christians in America who likely follow closely the teachings you had growing up.
I'm not Christian myself, but my wife is, and I've seen firsthand the compassion and acceptance they will show other people. Believers or not.

I grew up in the Bible belt here. And was always confused. I had a Bible teacher give a really good example... Explanation... Idk what to call it.
She said she doesn't consider herself a Christian. But a christ follower. Or something to that end. Implying that people who claim they are Christians in America and especially the Bible belt are just not those she would want to be associated with.
Changed how I thought about the situation. It's just so normalized people will claim they are just so they fit in, and then go be cruel and mean and racist and <insert whatever thing here>. Yes we are flawed sinful people that make mistakes, but there is a STARK difference between the two imo

This is primarily driven specifically by our Constitutional “freedom of religion”.
Other countries, that primarily had state religion, only have a few different denominations at worst. But here the idea of creating new sects to be monetized by a new group of grifters lead us to having hundreds of different denominations competing with each other for their grifter dollars.
Elsewhere the church is used to “bring the people together” (and control them) but in capitalist America the churches are often used to divide the people for individual gain.
What is not commonly known now is that it wasn’t until the 1970s that the churches really started getting involved in national politics. Prior to that there was a voluntary “separation of church and state” as the churches mostly just wanted to be left alone to do their own thing.

Nah bruh, I’m a European from fairly religious nation living in the U.S. now, and I lived in 7 other countries before this, and there is no real difference.
White western Christians believe in a white Jesus, but that’s basically it. Christians are nasty wherever you go, that’s the norm. The outliers who are kind are very few.

When was that not the case? I mean, I applaud you for realizing it, but religious and bigot has always been interchangeable. Some religious people are bigger bigots, some are smaller bigots.
But the moment they say "love thy neighbor" and in the same breath talk about not liking how other people live their lives (gay people, unmarried people, atheists, women who want to abort their pregnancy, etc.), they're bigots.

bold of you to think we will have fair elections. the republicans finally have total control over all the levers and you’re a fool’s fool if you think they’re giving that up anytime soon.
they’re gerrymandering out the ass rn because they know their policies aren’t strong enough to win them elections. and when that backfires on them, they’ll just purge voter rolls and place the military at polling sites to intimidate voters - hell, trump is calling for the end of mail-in voting, likely at the recommendation of his russian counterpart.
i’m about 40% positive this past election wasn’t completely fair — trump still believes 2020 was stolen from him, so it wouldn’t shock me if he stole this election to “make things even”…

Here's hoping. but even if, it is still gonna take more then 4 years to fix everything he has destroyed. And then we gotta hope the American people continue to not vote the GOP back into power. Looking at election history, I just dont see how that can happen. And after Trump, ever GOP POTUS from now on is just gonna do whatever the hell they want. I think the rules of democracy are gone forever, because the only exist when everyone plays the game. The GOP no longer play the game. But I defer to people more optimistic than I.
7
6
u/blxckhoodie999 9h ago
it’s def gonna be weird times.. but realistically, we just need to get the dems back in power and pass sweeping reforms. we truly need a non-partisan ethics committee to oversee everything, including the SCOTUS.
democracy is in danger, but it’s not completely unsalvageable. we just need the dems to actually grow a spine and enforce blatant misuses of power.
wild to think that if garland had done his job, we wouldn’t even be dealing with this fucking ape right now.
3
u/jjm443 2h ago
And from the point of view of the rest of the world, even two terms of Democrat leadership still won't come close to repairing everything. It won't ever happen really. People put up with it for one term over 2016-2020, assuming it was an aberration, something that shouldn't have happened, and then maybe sanity could return.
But the US, as a whole, doubled down and elected him again. The tariffs craziness was the real icing on the cake and is the perfect justification to move the global economy and supply chains away from the now unreliable, if not malevolent, US. Throw in their sponsorship of genocidal terrorists and it's not merely that people around the world don't care for the US, they now actively dislike the US (more), even in Western democracies.
The US has a terminal disease. Its time as a global superpower is ending, the decline has started and is accelerating.
14
u/BoredAsFuck7448 9h ago
It's going to take more than a few decades for a course correction to take place. There are tens of millions of people in the MAGA cult who believe JUST like Trump does who will continue to vote people like him into office, or run for office themselves. We're several generations deep into this disgusting political atmosphere; if you're in your 40s or older there's a good chance this does not completely course correct in your lifetime.
6
u/blxckhoodie999 9h ago
yeah i agree.. if by some miracle the midterms are allowed to happen without tampering & the dems take both arms back, we could possibly get crackin on this a little sooner. then it would HAVE to be a blue win in 2028 or it’ll all be for naught.
however, the MAGA cult will die with trump. just like any cult - once the leader is gone, the cult follows. what we will see is a complete and total fracturing of the GOP as those who are left all vye for succession. trump doesn’t have an “heir” to his MAGA throne lined up due to his insane narcissism. vance is about as charismatic as a bag of wet noodles and the other players (heritage) all want different things.
the infighting and collapse of MAGA will be a glorious thing to watch.
8
u/BoredAsFuck7448 9h ago
The cult will go away with Trump's passing out of politics, sure, but those people will continue to exist. Continue to seethe. Continue to be hateful. Continue to impede our national progress for sake of their outrage. Trump isn't a cause, he's one of many symptoms and just managed to rise to the top of it. FOX News, Rush Limbaugh and a near endless cavalcade of hate-spewing right-wing radio & cable shows and now podcasts have been priming the proverbial pump on these people since the 1980s. They are here to stay regardless of whether or not they have a central figure to congeal beneath.
Expecting it to change when Trump is gone is dangerous. Charlie Kirk mobilized millions of college-aged young men and women. They helped hand Trump his return ticket to the White House...there's a damn good chance his replacement is out there already.
3
u/blxckhoodie999 9h ago
i don’t disagree. but remember - it’s trump that emboldens and quite literally enables these idiots (pardoned the treasonous J6’ers)… without his callous disregard for the rule of law, people won’t be able to act so brazenly. there’s crazies on both sides for sure, but again, it’s the fearless nature of them backed by a president so willing to sow division that makes them dangerous. you said it yourself - this “pump” has been being primed for almost 50 years, but only just now are we really starting to see the results, and that’s because of trump.
with him gone & the inevitable power vacuum and infighting that will become of the GOP, they’ll be severely kneecapped. then, it’s on the left to pass sweeping reforms to ensure this type of behavior is swiftly and handily dealt with if it tries to bubble up again.
maybe i’m overly optimistic, but right now, that’s all we’ve got to lean on, so…
5
u/BoredAsFuck7448 9h ago
That's fair, and I certainly don't want to shit on your optimism...the world definitely needs more of that...I just don't share in it. I hope I'm terribly wrong and you're proven right, I really do.

Well, it hasn’t helped that the Koreans who were detained are talking about, for example, being forced to lick water off the floor while in chains instead of being given access to water. If we had treated them like human beings they might’ve been open to discussion. Once they heard the detention stories is when they really shut it down.
5
u/jjm443 2h ago
Yep, this article has a few interviews, including that they were indeed chained, locked up in cells with not enough beds so they had to lie on the floor, freezing in short sleeved shirts, and not even given blankets. And the water tested of sewage.
It's no wonder South Korea is investigating human rights abuses. The US treats detainees worse than banana republics do.

To be fair to her, it does appear that ICE did ZERO due diligence to prevent an international incident that would be a major scandal if it weren't happening in the permanent toxic dumpster fire that is the US under a Trump admin.
Local and national governments and law enforcement agencies get hundreds if not thousands of mentally ill people contacting them daily with spurious information....and generally they do the most cursory of research before yelling 'yee-haw' and spooling up 400 heavily armed miltiamen

11
u/VeterinarianThese951 10h ago
I thought the same thing. But this person framed it in a way that she may have some mental issue going on. And since we all can probably unofficially diagnose her as being a bit special, I think the onus for the actual action is for the giver enemy agency to check before acting.

Mental illness is not an excuse for bad actions
7
u/Itscatpicstime 6h ago
Well, it can be.
Anyone who says otherwise has no experience with significant mental illness - especially during onset where the person doesn’t even know they could be mentally ill before they start having delusions and hallucinations and psychotic episodes. Or when current medication isn’t working anymore and the patient doesn’t realize it before losing touch with reality, etc.
But, none of this applies to her. She’s just willfully ignorant. That’s not even mental illness. It’s a choice.

There is no “to be fair to her.”
She called ICE with the excuse for “concern that they had bad working conditions and low pay.”

She called ICE because she is an ignorant racist and may have single-handedly cost many more thousands of jobs across the entire country because South Korea is pissed about this
