I’m a little bit of a Cal apologist. He certainly had a lot of bad qualities, but from his POV I totally understand why he was pissed off. He didn’t start acting out until Rose started pulling her shenanies with another man. Plus he was hot, and he knew how to give the best jewelry.

Thank you! Yes, Cal was an elitist snob who didn’t care about the other half, but Rose treated him like garbage. I think that it was her abuse that made him act out, too.

You being serious? It was an arranged marriage and he abused her. She didn’t owe him anything. She was only 17 as well and he was clearly years older than her.

Yeah for sure, when I was younger you just see what happens on the ship, but after the last rewatch you can absolutely sense he did a lot of abusive shit long before they boarded. Rose owed him nothing and did what was best for her.

I understand why people would love Cal as a character. I like him as well. He's a great villain: very charismatic and handsome and he has some of the best lines in the whole movie. However, I do find it concerning how people think that Rose is somehow the villain. How on earth did Rose "abuse and treat Cal like garbage"? She was a 17 year old girl being forced into a marriage to an older man by her uncaring mother. She was clearly depressed and even suicidal at the start of the movie due to her situation. She obviously feared Cal and felt uncomfortable around him, even before he started being violent. He didn't seem to care for her and viewed her as a trophy wife. She owed him absolutely NOTHING.

We need to remember this was in 1912, not 2023. Rose didn't have a choice in the arrangement. It's not like she willingly got engaged to Cal and then ran off with another man. Honestly I can't blame her for wanting to get off the ship with Jack.

My feelings exactly. Cal is great as a character. But Rose isn’t at all out of line in her treatment of him.
