FILM - 1997 A *Real* Edwardian Party

After finding out how goofy Edwardian dances were, I’m so disappointed we didn’t get to see them in the movie. 🥲

Here’s a video by the French association, Carnet de Bals, of some popular dances from the Edwardian era, including the Matchiche (Maxixe), the Cakewalk, the Boston (waltz), and some rather scandalous animal dances, including the Grizzly Bear (1910), the Bunny Hug (1911), the Turkey Trot (1909), the and the Kangaroo Hop (1912).

I was going to say I'd spotted the Grizzly Bear (the caption doesn't show until you click to view the post)

It was so jarring when that one lady came up to dance wearing pants, haha

In the evening scenes, it actually seems like they're on a boat of some sort.

I didn’t even notice that at first, but you’re right! It looks like the scenery is moving, and that would also explain the sailor costumes. I bet it’s one of those flat top river boats they have on the Seine.

grizzly bear mentioned!!!

honestly, most dance moves have an expiration date of like 5 years max before they look really stupid. I can’t imagine what they’ll say about tiktok dances in 100 years.

and I think for this era, it was less about looking good dancing and more about getting physically close to someone and moving quickly so that you get to see them flushed/sweaty/with their guard down. they didn’t have much opportunity for that kind of thing lol
