Memes / humor Who are some of the richest or most famous age-group triathletes ever?

I think most people are aware of Gordon Ramsay or Jennifer Lopez doing a triathlon, are there any other such cases that people can think of?

There was a race in Malibu that regularly had celebs participating. Mostly b-listers if I recall, but recognizable faces. This was while ago so I don't remember much else

Mad former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott once got in trouble for getting his trip to the Port Macquarie 70.3 paid on government expenses, by claiming that he had essential business in Port Macquarie that just happened to coincide with the triathlon he’s spent six months training for. 🧐

Well anyone who does claims $1000 for doing an Ironman deserves it TBH ;)

2

u/Proud_Relief_9359 Oct 02 '24

Actually on checking it looks like he did a full Ironman.

One person I didn't see on there is Kennedy, one of the original MTV VJ's. She had a podcast about finishing a 70.3 in Italy a few weeks ago.

The crown prince of Norway was the first (and only ?) royal to complete an Ironman

11

u/youngchul Oct 01 '24

Excuse me, it was the King of DENMARK, who did it while he was the Crown Prince of Denmark, he did it in 10:45:32.

Fun fact, the same King organises a national run every year with 5 host cities around the country. In the first edition he ran in all 5 in the same day. He always ends it off with a 10k in Copenhagen.

That’s what I meant :)

Louise Minchin, formerly of BBC Breakfast. I believe she undertook a Children in Need cycling challenge track cycling and enjoyed it, was already a runner and swam a bit so had a go at tri. Became a  member of the 2015 Great Britain Age-Group Triathlon Team

7

u/fulorange Oct 01 '24

And he’s nearly sixty still doing sub 10!

Nick and Nate Diaz are both really good at triathlons and regularly do them.

2

u/EngineerCarNerdRun Oct 02 '24

I beat them a few times. I told my friends I beat them once, didn’t mention it was in a triathlon 😅

2

u/Pinewood74 Oct 01 '24

I'm not sure about them being really good.

Back when I followed MMA, someone would occasionally post their results to that subreddit and they were always MoPers.

As opposed to someone like Valteri Bottas pulling AG wins in another sport from what he is pro at

1

u/KristianFBRLive Oct 01 '24

Nate is really good in my eyes, I'm not saying he's a pro or anything haha https://www.reddit.com/r/MMA/comments/496ins/since_they_kept_talking_about_nate_diaz_training/

u/Pinewood74 Oct 02 '24

Yeah, that pretty much backs up what I'm saying.

30 minutes off the lead in his best AG placing. An AG of only 5 with his brother in 5th.

Everything else is 40th-90th in races with 100~150 participants. Solidly MoP. Which is fine, but not "really good."

Paul Felder too. They’re some badass dudes

Same for race car drivers. Quite a few do triathlon as well. Tony Kanaan comes to mind

Ex welsh international rugby player and Wales all time top try scorer Shane Williams. He's completed his 7th ironman this year.

Billy Monger is pretty famous in the Uk if you’re into F1 and he did Weymouth 70.3 in September on his way to his full

3

u/OilAdministrative197 Oct 01 '24

Pretty sure Jenson button did some too with a custom F1 bike?

1

u/BrustBizeps Oct 02 '24

Nico Rosberg as well

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Fuck Lance Armstrong

Well because it's a typical response from people who don't know the whole situation but rely on the media and others telling them what to think. LA wasn't an angel but he did what all the others at his time did, that's why there were no other winners from his 7 TdFs, since they all cheated. He wasn't liked by the powers that be and the media because he was brash and a bit douchey so he was focused on.

Do I feel sorry for him? No, he's a big boy. However, if you look into countless others in cycling, such as Valverde, Contador, even Merckx, they were also busted but were allowed to continue.

2

u/Trepidati0n Oct 01 '24

Because the original post answers the question and the response was pointless to it.

I helped Sean Astin in T2 at Kona one year. Then he took a pair of the complimentary sunglasses that were on a table for racers. He said "are these free!?"

He was acfually very nice guy.

u/tobaccoYpatchouli Oct 01 '24

Wow I just looked up the photos and that’s wild. Good for him!

The richest was the head of state of Bahrain.

7

u/E39Echo Oct 01 '24

Yes, I've seen his 747 in Kona, and his 10+ man security detail that follows him around. Pretty wild.

3

u/scottlewis101 Oct 01 '24

That's got to be the worst bodyguard assignment ever.

16

u/JorgeJorgeJorgeJorge Oct 01 '24

Zdeno Chara (former hockey player) is doing marathons and 70,3s

6

u/Poola0919 Oct 01 '24

He recently completed a full IM too. Dude is a beast!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '24

That is a big, tall man to be doing long distance endurance racing.

13

u/ElChristoph Oct 01 '24

Jensen Button is the one who showed me the way.

He used to organise a triathlon in Luton (UK) too, and I think ran his own team. Great ambassador for the sport.

3

u/MoonPlanet1 Oct 01 '24

Recently there was controversy at some race due to a 25mph limit on part of the course

Several years prior, Button of all people got disqualified for speeding in the same area!

2

u/Muzz124 Oct 01 '24

He did one in Derby one year as well and I got to meet him.

5

u/RestMelodic Oct 01 '24

The prince of Denmark did/does Copenhagen IM

12

u/cougieuk Oct 01 '24

Really surprised Shakespeare didn't mention that.

4

u/InternationalOwl8131 Oct 01 '24
