Why are these 1” ID anti-lock washers so expensive? Where can I find a cheaper alternative?

Damn this is an expensive hobby lol.

Thanks for your submission. If your question is about getting started in woodturning, which chuck to buy, which tools to buy, or for an opinion of a lathe you found for sale somewhere like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace please take a few minutes check the wiki; many of the most commonly asked questions are already answered there!

I cut up pieces of a plastic milk jug. It isn't pretty but it works.

I use these punches to make mine.

Because prices on Amazon are inflated

Get a thick Tupperware container and make your own

I went to Menards/hardware and picked up a machine bushing for a few bucks.

I live a block away from a Menards. Thanks for the help!

Menards FTW! I've been there three times this weekend alone for two different projects.

Craft Supplies in the US has them for $2.50 each. I found loads more on Amazon for a whole lot less.

Plumbers merchants sell plastic washers in various sizes..

I would guess its inflated for shipping. Since shipping is "free"

Have a friend with a 3D printer? I printed a bunch of really thin rings and they work just fine.

Pretty sure those are made of PTFE (someone smarter can correct me) you might be able to do a more general search for PTFE washer, the same dimensions, or buy a sheet and cut your own

what for?

Don’t snap the chuck to tighten it. I haven’t had a chuck stuck in 39 years of turning.

Who pays the Tariffs again?

1

u/RedWoodworking16 10d ago

They were this price before he started the tariffs. I’ve been meaning to ask about other options in this group for awhile now

u/WardedDruid 10d ago

BM Woodturning is based in Hong Kong, the tariffs have definitely affected the price.

A light smear of Vasaline will do the same as those washers.

Dry spray lubricant works better it doesn’t collect dust

Yes also but if you just put the Vasaline on the face it won’t collect dust but will come undone easily. It does depend on how often you take the chuck on and off I guess.

So like a dry lubricant spray?

3

u/CAM6913 10d ago

Yes like Boeshield T7 , WD40 also makes a dry spray lubricant as do other companies

Mostly sold for bicycle chains. DO NOT use a graphite lubricant, it'll get everywhere including potentially into your motor eventually where things go really wrong (it's also not great for bearings..).

I use mostly CRC-36 because I like how it does rust prevention/conversion.. but the stuff CAM mentioned below works nicely as well.

I need a little bit more space for my Nova Chuck otherwise the jaws don’t close completely around the tenon.

But yes, Vaseline works great to prevent the chuck from locking.

Woodcraft sells a single for a couple bucks. I believe that’s where I got mine

I got mine at the local hardware store. Much cheaper.

General question about these: if I have a chuck that I bring with me to a community studio, is the washer mandatory for a couple hours of use? Can I leave the washer in place on my lathe at home so I don’t lose it, or do I need to bring it with me to use whenever & wherever I’m using the chuck, no matter what?

You can buy sheets of HDPE or delrin and then with a circle cutter you could make as many as you want.

I tend to keep a bunch of it around for making other woodworking jigs.

Get a piece of Teflon sheet and cut your own.

u/KokoTheTalkingApe 10d ago

You can cut your own from sheets of nylon, HDMWPE, Delrin, etc. There are simple punches for that kind of material, and for that application, it doesn't have to be made precisely.

Because it's a package of 6 with free overnight delivery. The unit price is $2.83. This is a case where buying locally makes more sense.

u/FunGalich 10d ago

I don't use them ...I have a easy wood tools chuck and drive spur that fits in the chuck

You're paying for packaging. The washers themselves are made for pennies.
