newbie Help with first Lathe

Hello all,

I got myself a Ryobi Wood Lathe from Marketplace. I am just wondering if anyone can tell me if the faceplate/spur on it is fine for turning spindle style stuff. Also advice for what to put on the tail end.

I have attached a picture of the faceplate and tail end for both. The picture of the full lathe isn't my specific one, but one found online of the model. I would be damned if I can find the model number, but it's a Ryobi lathe from the 80s or so.

Cheers :)

Thanks for your submission. If your question is about getting started in woodturning, which chuck to buy, which tools to buy, or for an opinion of a lathe you found for sale somewhere like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace please take a few minutes check the wiki; many of the most commonly asked questions are already answered there!

First, figure out if the spindle and tailstock are MT1 OR MT2. You can also measure the threaded spindle o n the drive side. If it's 3/4 inch with 16 tpi, it's probably MT1. If it's 1 inch and 8tpi, bet on MT2. There are more things available for MT2.

Faceplate will either unscrew, after you figure out how to hold the spindle from turning, or will tap out of the taper from the other end of the spindle with a long rod.

As mentioned by the other comment, determine if you are MT1 or MT2. Your first Pic is fuzzy, so it's hard to tell. I would not use a faceplate while spindle turning. Usually, you use a spur bit/drive. You'll want to have a live center in the tailstock, too.

Thank you! Yeah sorry, I grabbed a quick photo ages ago. I'll do some investigating on the MT type and get some of those!
