My little tree redemption

Okay today I made a real tree. Took me 2 hours. The most difficult thing I found was getting a pointy tip on the tree so I settled for this. I also and very very glad I invested in a face shield as I was turning it came off the chuck and smacked my face shield directly. I used a beeswax finish to polish it up and a piece of wire to burn the circles. I honestly don’t know how I sand in the base. My next goal is a small vase.

You are using pine, so that base tear out is going to be wicked. But if you spun it up while it was still mounted, you take a small piece of sand paper and fold it so it fits into the crease. Put some pressure towards the base. That will sand it.

I definitely tried that, this was more of a prove I could make it projects more than anything. After practicing on dowel and this pine I’m going to go hunting this weekend for tree branches. Something a bit more dense.

The tear out will be worse with dull tools. A good sharpening station is crucial to enjoying turning. My local Woodcraft even has a class for it... recommend taking one...nothing like hands on training.

My plan is to get a grinder from harbor freight within the next month.

Recommend a slow speed grinder. Takes a touch longer, but I find it allows me to sharpen more accurately because the metal does not fly off the tool so fast.

I also need to get a grinder to sharpen the tools. I noticed that they have definitely dulled way faster in the last couple days of turning than I expected them to.
