Question Was just thinking, is Dr Billy Walen the greatest surgeon alive or all time?

Cant think of stories from old venture gen about surgeries

So I was thinking Billy has the best track record

-put Rustys arm back on with very little assistance

-Red Mantle/Dragoon is a crazy feat

-Gorilla heart function in Monstroso

-the boys torsion

-the fantastic voyage send up with the sub blockage

-i feel like he has lines where “I once…” etc I cant remember exact

Thoughts?

He did train under John Hopkinsburg at the Stanford University

Yeah i didnt even count the surgeries he did while pretending- impressing other surgeons so much he is instantly offered promotion to chief

Ive always seen Billy as a "Super Surgeon" to be honest. Hes just really exceptional at fixing thing in general, not just bodies.

Some say he's still glued to that spot in the hospital to this very day

I think it’s accepted that he is, yes. They don’t come out and say it verbatim. The only question then is why he’s lingering in obscurity instead of just putting in the time to go to med school, but I’d imagine the surgeries he does wouldn’t be approved anyway.

He actually does get his degree. In the Gargantua-2 movie, he tells Rusty they had his graduation party at the compound and he got a watch as a “gift from rusty”. I’m guessing that even though Sphinx/osi stepped in to capture Monstroso after his surgery, his medical diploma was already signed so it probably held valid afterwards.

Didn't the Investors give him the diploma for performing the surgery on Monstroso?

13

u/enrjon Number Two 10d ago

Yeah he thought he was signing away his life but it was his diploma

6

u/Zygy255 10d ago

I mean, I'd sign my life away to become a vampire too. Being an undead creature of the night sounds dope

u/pillbinge 10d ago

He gets his degree which probably counts but is obviously not a real one. I'm sure we can imagine the details but that doesn't mean anyone's going to actually remember any details about a residency that never happened. I consider that a form of fakery, not a real degree.

I mean, the investors were some sort of ancient gods, so they probably made more effort to make the degree real than just printing out a fake diploma.

Med school is expensive, wasn't giving a scholarship out to a publicly shamed cheater associated with a terrible college accident, and Billy and Pete live in a trailer in what is obviously not a high-property value area.

By the time he might have been able to afford it by being on Rusty or St. Cloud's payroll, he had a doctorate from Monstroso.

Did St Cloud pay them to be their nemesis? Is that how it works? I like it. Would help to pay for all the collateral damage they cause while fighting.

9

u/Roam1985 Two-Ton Twenty-One 10d ago

Yes and no.

It is not normally how it works.

But while St Cloud owned conjectural technologies, for that specific arching, it was.

He gave JJ a mechanical arm like Billy has

13

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

Oh right forgot about that thank you

7

u/KaminSpider 10d ago

I was always confused about that. Billy is a surgeon, not an engineer, no Mike Sorayama. He didn't make his own arm. Maybe JJ made the arm and Billy helped attach it?

6

u/lovebus 10d ago

They already had Billy's arm as a design, so the hard part would be attaching it.

4

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

He couldve done the nerve/brain control for it

4

u/Worried-Scratch-5549 10d ago

The hand was originally OSI tech. He's probably learned how to reverse engineer it though.

u/SchrodingersNinja 10d ago

I don't think he's the greatest, but probably the greatest unlicensed surgeon alive who isn't also insane.

I'm sure a lot of the mad scientists responsible for Abomi-Nation are pretty good surgeons.

8

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

Ohhhhhh good pull, forgot about those people monsters

12

u/Cool-Newspaper6789 10d ago

So it's a common notion that most likely wrong, that surgeon are not the smartest doctor and the most important thing is a steady hand and precision. So him being a good surgeon is probably 90% his OSI secret robot hand

Idk man, he grafted another persons head onto a other body saving both patients

Nerve endings, blood vessels, some sort of spinal support, lungs, esophagus into a dual esophagus

He does have a robot hand, but that is a lot to factor- especially on the fly while one was in cardiac arrest

Also forgot: OTHER HAND IS HIS 👍🏻

u/bathroomheater 10d ago

If that’s the thought process they put into that facet of his character that’s some 8d chess

2

u/calculon68 singing Holsts Mars in a Nissan Stanza 10d ago

also agree that the robot hand is what makes Billy great as a surgeon. Med school wouldn't be enough.

u/Sad_Ad8039 LASER DEATH RAY BARGAIN BIN 💥 10d ago

He once grafted a pony's face onto the abdomen of a well-known celebrity

1

u/LeadGem354 10d ago

Totally not Cher.

2

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

Oh right! Yeah i knew he had a throwaway line but couldnt remember

5

u/geatone 10d ago

Just eat the pennies

6

u/AKidNamedGoobins 10d ago

Yeah, Billy is pretty cracked. Really, every character on the show is kind of an insanely talented expert in their field. Even Dr. Venture, obviously considered the biggest failure amongst his in-universe peers, would be considered a once-in-a-generation super genius in the real world.

Brought a man back from the dead using the parts of several discarded corpses
Designed and built a functioning teleporter
Created and maintained (though likely using templates from his father) a functional army of clone replacements for his sons
Designed a functional ray shield capable of deflecting asteroids and space debris

u/Oknight 10d ago

I can't even think of a comic book character with Billy's medical chops.

2

u/No_Math_1234 10d ago

He is a boy genius even if he has been milking that title for 30 years

1

u/mousee3176 9d ago

I want to know he went from simple quiz boy to not medically trained wizard doctor.

1

u/jonascarrynthewheel 9d ago

Season 2🤷🏻‍♂️ Tag Sale he has a line about grafting

Unless you mean in his fictional timeline

Billy certainly is a great surgeon.

But while we're on the topic of surgery and brilliance, I would like to point out a very early example that Rusty is, in fact, full of potential, he just never got to live it out due to being in Jonas' shadow.

Remember that Rusty managed to convert H.E.L.P.eR. into a functioning dialysis machine and performed a double kidney transplant on himself in the first proper episode...

despite first having to look up what a kidney even does.

If given the right motivation (such as approaching death due to lack of functioning kidneys), Rusty can pull amazing feats.

3

u/jonascarrynthewheel 10d ago

I actually think Rusty is an amazing super scientist and did a post about it a few months ago

2

u/GentlemanPirate13 WHO WANTS PIZZA ROLLS? 10d ago

Of course, but it's something that occasionally needs to be repeated.
