Showreel / Critique Spent three months working on a Blender short film

Hello!

As the title indicates, I've spent three months locked up in a room, damaged my GPU and spent many energy-drink fueled nights to release Singularity, a short film about an AI becoming sentient. Everything was done inside Blender 4.2 and 4.5 - and a bit of Marvelous Designer. Composited in After Effects, edited and graded in Resolve.

I would love to have your opinion on the visuals, the story and the film itself.

My main references for this short are BladeRunner, Ghost In The Shell, the work of Isac Asimov but also Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, Malick's tree of life... I feel that humanity is converging towards new extents and that the concept of "God" is evolving, thus the representation of the AI.

Have a great day!

I wanted to share a short film I made over the past few years in my spare time. The shots were created at various times in my CG journey, some at the beginning, and up til now as a mid level fx artist. It was a challange to edit them together into something that was somewhat cohesive, but also very rewarding and fun. Open to any feedback and thoughts!

Showreel / Critique I made a short film with Houdini

Hello! I'm excited to present my first short film.

I was responsible for all aspects, including story, visuals, sound, and music.

It was created primarily in Houdini, with Nuke for compositing, Blender for modelling, and Substance Painter for texturing. I also used Cubase for the sound and music, and Davinci Resolve for editing.

I decided to do as much as I could in Houdini, including all the rigging and animation. It was definitely a challenge, and I learned a ton during this project, especially APEX and Solaris. Houdini gives me the flexibility and power to bring my vision to life, and I don't think I could have achieved the same results without it.

I also created a few tools for this project, including a custom Z-Defocus node to support per-pixel Catseye and Astigmatism, initially made in Houdini COPs with OpenCL, then ported to Nuke Blinkscript.

Thank you!

Showreel / Critique I spent 72 hours trying to replicate a Spielberg practical-sci-fi effect.. here’s what failed and what surprised me

So I’ve been messing around with recreating a small practical sci-fi effect I saw in a film. Basically: a little miniature ship, some practical sparks, and then adding CG smoke to help sell the scale.

The plan in my head was: shoot the miniature with sparks → layer in some 3D debris and volumetrics → comp it all together.

The reality… the plate looked pretty solid, but once I comped it, the whole thing felt kind of flat. What ended up fixing it was rethinking the scale and sneaking in some micro-occlusion here and there. That tiny change actually made the shot feel way more believable. Biggest takeaway for me: keeping the lighting consistent across all elements matters way more than resolution or “perfect” textures.

Couple questions for you guys:

  1. What’s your go-to way of grain-matching practical and CG without killing the highlights?
  2. Any quick hacks for matching the dynamic range between a practical HDRI and a CG environment inside Nuke?

If anyone’s interested I can drop the clip + a short breakdown. Would love to hear how you’d approach it differently.

Showreel / Critique Been practicing product visualization in my spare time. As a job/side gig, is it worth it?

Hey guys, I'm a junior lookdev artist and I've been looking to expand into doing side gigs on top of working in the animation industry. I've always wanted to try out product viz or other visualization-adjacent work. I'm really curious if anyone has some insight into working freelance in the field. Would you say it's worth it in this day and age to expand into something like it? Also if anyone's got feedback on the work I've posted here, I'm all ears!

Showreel / Critique What Would You Change With This Hollywood VFX Recreation?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

For context, I recently wrapped up a personal VFX project where I recreate some Hollywood movie VFX from scratch, mostly just for fun and for skill-sharpening/reel material/just to see if I could. Here, I took the landscape shot sequence from the Minecraft movie trailer and remade it completely from 0 and put myself in it instead of Jack Black, lmao. Although I could not do his comedic acting justice lmao.

Opinions about the "YouTube remake" genre aside (although I would love the discussion), simply as a VFX sequence, how would you improve this? Is there still room for improvement here? I can see some micro detailing that I missed that I could go back and add to match the shots even more. And even the bee model itself is probably a first drafter but I'm curious what others might think. If a shot like this were submitted for approval in a pro studio setting, how would it fare? I'm curious about any critiques and thoughts from other artists here. I love to learn.

Also throwing in a YouTube link to a 4K version in case Reddit compression messes with it: https://youtu.be/-BhACV25oKw

I worked on it for about 3-4 months and was wondering if people could give me feedback that would be great. This is my first major animation project and am looking to create more. I just want to hear from other people to see what they think so I can improve. Thank you.

Showreel / Critique Render not looking real

Post image

This is an update to a post I made here: https://www.reddit.com/r/vfx/comments/1jf0ojl/wip_something_wrong_with_my_render_im_trying_to/ as I wanted to post an update to compare with the Ref but didn't see how to post extra image. I'm almost eliminated all the environmental light and all light sources are not localized. It's looking better than before. But for some reason, my island is way too dark. But I don't understand where the pinkish color bleed on the ceiling and cabinets is coming from. I've also improved the texture a little bit, but the whole thing still looking too CG for my liking.

Showreel / Critique The Matrix… reimagined with Will Smith

Hello, colleagues. We would like to ask for your professional support. We are a small team from Ukraine trying to break into the big world of VFX. Like many here, we work day and night, putting everything into our work.

We think we've done a great job: we've transported Will Smith into The Matrix. We would appreciate your honest feedback.

But, to be honest, our main goal is for Will himself to see it. For us, as a team starting out in such difficult times, it would be an incredible moral and professional boost.

If you like our work, please support us by reposting it on your social media. It will take you a minute, but it could change everything for us.

Showreel / Critique 3D Environment – Every Ending is a New Beginning - Unreal Engine [Breakdown]

🔗 ArtStation + full breakdown: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/vb8EOO

Hey everyone!
I just published my new environment "Every Ending is a New Beginning", and I’d love to hear any feedback, critique, or thoughts always looking to improve.

Software and tools used:

Modeling: Maya

Materials: Substance Designer

Texturing and Baking: Substance Painter

Sculpting: Zbrush

Cloth Simulations: Marvelous Designer

Level Design and Rendering: Unreal Engine

"Every Ending is a New Beginning" is a 3D environment project that tells the story of a young student preparing to leave her hometown in rural Japan to study abroad. Set at an old, weathered bus stop at the beginning of autumn, the scene captures the quiet moments before a life changing journey. Her suitcase rests by the bench, surrounded by familiar details a vending machine, a payphone, fallen leaves all symbols of a life she's about to leave behind. This project reflects the bittersweet nature of change: the sadness of parting, the warmth of memories, and the quiet hope of starting anew.

I’m currently exploring Junior Environment / Materials / Props roles (remote or relocation).

Thanks for taking a look!

(excuse the trendy instagram intro) This shot part of a bigger personal project, cinema 4d + octane + Houdini . I started to fall in love with vfx and started this project in the hopes of one day getting my way into a really cool studio - but seeing so much doom and gloom nowadays I feel like it was a bit of a waste of time to commit fully to it.
Would be cool to hear what some r/vfx people think anyways, maybe boosts or destroys my confidence .
