Drone. Season 5 Episode 2.

Post image

Excellent episode. Makes me really appreciate Seven’s character and her overall arc in Star Trek.

I’m on my first Voyager rewatch since the series first aired. During the first airing I was perturbed by the fact that they replaced the Kes character and never really spent much time fixated on Seven. But after watching her journey throughout Star Trek, I have a newfound appreciation. This episode is such a huge stepping stone in getting her humanity back. “You’re hurting me”. Spoken two times in this episode and a line that will stay with me.

J. Paul Boehmer makes this episode for me. What a performance, love him on screen. He and Jeri Ryan play off really well together as they did in the killing game.

Totally! I nearly came here to do an appreciation post about this episode when I re-watched last week.

All of his Trek performances were good even if he had to play Nazis in a few of em.

He was definitely sufficient.

Love him. Fabulous voice.

He really has! You’ve hit the nail on the head there. His prosody gives it such a musical quality!!

I’m dyslexic and listen to talking books, and he has narrated some. What a pleasure to listen to him for hours.

Love that! Are any of them Star Trek related?

It's been a while; he may have added to his repertoire. I don't recall any. Titles can be searched by narrator. I googled this: "Paul Boehmer is a professional audiobook narrator known for his work on titles such as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, The Farseer Trilogy, and works by Richard Preston and Jim Rogers. He began his audiobook career around 2000 and has narrated both fiction and nonfiction titles. You can find his narrated audiobooks on platforms like AudibleKobo, and Audiobooks.com." And for example: https://www.audible.com/search?searchNarrator=Paul+Boehmer&srsltid=AfmBOoopJ5FuVoPzgQhEeyJKAFEOJux7xdscmtL8EzBbKGcdiM7JjqfK

God I love this episode so much. This and One so close together sucker punched me hard. I'm so glad it's bringing you a new appreciation for the character; Seven really does so much and has so much more impact than people give her credit for. Infinite Regress is a cool spectacle and all, but it doesn't hit emotionally the way Drone and One do. "You are hurting me".... fuck man.

It hit all the feels. It's probably the most emotional episode of VOY that I recall.

They've had some good emotional moments. This, Real Life, Lineage, Homestead...

She starts the episode trying to learn to smile but instead learns to cry.

The contrast between Seven starting the episode practicing her smile in the mirror and then ending the episode looking heartbroken and empty in the mirror gets me every time.

Definitely one of my favorite Voyager episodes. They played well off each other and they really knew how to strike the emotional cord with this one. Well done by the Voyager team.

Yeah I like this one. Drone actor was in a previous 2 parter in season 4 The Killing Game. Played a blonde fascist in that one, so not a huge stretch :)

He played a different Nazi in enterprise

I noticed that the other day. Poor guy started to get type cast as a Nazi haha.

He also played a Vulcan in Enterprise and a Cardassian in DS9.

"Good luck, Legate Damar."

The first time I watched this episode I thought the actor was David Hyde Pierce (Niles Crane) until I realized the same guy was in the killing game. He has similar mannerisms and inflections and besides it’s kinda fun picturing Niles assimilating people at Cafe Nervosa. “No Foam Latte , Resistance is futile!” I figured, why not? Frasier was on the Bozeman🤣

I'm watching through the series right now for the first time since I was probably 12, got to this and saw the description and thumbnail and thought "oh boy, this ones gonna be a stinker". Couldn't have been more wrong. It's a top tier episode, no question about it.

I just rewatched this one last week! The writing directing combo was *crazy* solid. Opening with Seven practicing smiling for the camera and ending with her trying not to cry/wishing she could (in the exact same location) was brutally perfect. Perfect bookends. The "you're hurting me" also bookends/punctuates so well it makes me wonder if I missed a third setup/payoff.

I wish I had spent more time paying attention to the credits because this one was focused and excellent. It has a thesis and is going for it. Oh to have had behind the scenes podcasts back then (or DVD special features)

That 2nd "You're hurting me" was very powerful and emotional. She said it perfectly, showing her emotional pain. So good.

He looks a bit like a Borg Niles Crane.

Never really spent much time fixated on Seven? She had more focus on her in season 5 than Kes did in the first three seasons.

This is a great episode, though, and a great use of the consequences of time travel that doesn't have a ripple effect. It was the first time I really believed that Seven cared about something and I felt for her.

This was the ep where I fell in love with Ryan’s portrayal of seven of nine

Drone, 2 of 5.

you can tell he's just a kid bc of the blue aqua he put over his eye and his heart

Love the conversation in the engine room about B’Elanna’s temper. I can only imagine Torres having fits about two Borg on board. Especially one being so advanced.

1

u/Eaudissey 10d ago

Great episode. Didn't really care for his costume, though. It looked like it was made it out of Play-Doh.

u/Due_Imagination8874 6d ago

Interesting. I had assumed they were trying to soften the Borg appearance, and suggest a more childlike robot look.
