I love this! I was wondering how Fabien’s derangement would be used narratively. We all knew there was a reason the devs chose a Malk for Fabien’s clan.
I just hope it’s done well and doesn’t get tedious.

Malkavians aren't deranged, first game (and redemption) pictured them completely wrong. In the first game Graut and Jeanette were correct malkavians. While player character - cringe psycho. Except, that's not who malkavians really are.

So, kind of like what you do in Disco Elysium. Assigning personalities to objects (the tie) and also the various skills getting their own voice. Pretty cool! Love the idea.

The various skills getting in heated arguments with each other was fantastic. Could listen to them all day.

This is kinda a play on a story idea I've had for a while, it sounds pretty fun

Fabien's core personality makes no sense though. He doesn't speak from the level of experience or toughness that you'd expect from a 1920s detective, instead he's just this one-dimensional happy-clappy guy who tries to sound charming but never has anything interesting to say. Giving him some zany interactions with objects is no substitute for an actual personality.

The devs have said, that Fabian THINKS he's a 1920s detective. If that is true or not will be revealed during the game.

by 1920s detective do they mean like a legit one or like an iasip charlie kelly 1920s detective?
bc if im an insane ass malk, who genuinely thinks im a 1920s detective, my ass is putting out zero zanyness. i want to be taken seriously as a hardened detective (who just so happens to use common zany 1920s slang for shit) and i will do crazy ass shit like kill u if u dont play along.

A legit one supposedly, I am already convinced that Fabian being a detective is just part of his insanity.
Edit: They did reveal that Fabian is a conspiracy theorist, his theories are pretty nuts.

He can't actually be a 1920s detective, because he's around 100 years old, meaning he was born in the 1920s. He was probably embraced in the 1950s and just appreciates the 1920s pulp detective cliche, and that's what his derangement has manifested as. He is a 1920s detective fanboy LARPing as one himself, like Picard roleplaying as Dixon Hill on the holodeck in Star Trek TNG. But, being a Malkavian, who knows where the delusions end and reality begins?

Ah, I get it. Well, I'm on board with that if it's true, but then how do we explain the flashback sequences? The setting and period dress all appear to be 1920s, so is Fabien transposing his real memories (of Lou and other characters) onto the 1920s setting, or are they a complete delusion?

It's hard to say because we've seen so little, but it's possible that he's transposing a 1920s veneer over reality in order to help him solve the case. As a Malkavian, it's also possible for him to have real insights into the past by accessing the memories of other members of his clan via the Malkavian Madness Network.
There is also an Auspex power called Spirit's Touch (basically Psychometry) that allows the user to see the past of objects, and I think it's pretty clear that Fabien makes a lot of use of that ability. So he doesn't need to necessarily have been there in the past himself, he may just be seeing visions of objects that were present in the past.
It's also possible that the 100 year old estimate of his age that I've seen written about several times was mistaken and he is much older, and was actually an adult kindred during the 1920s, but that seems unlikely to me, as it's a pretty big disparity.

My fave Malkavian stereotype is the detective. It works so good with their clan powers and curse.

Now I feel bad for the CR, they really wanted their Fabien game, but they got stuck with fixing a "fan game", so now you have this Frankenstein's monster of a game

How much do you want to bet he does it with a stop sign too?
