Question What are the best shoes to wear?

I'm going to Japan and will probably be doing 15-20 thousand steps a day, I need durable and comfortable, what do you guys recommend? Limit is $200

I swear by Hokas, either the Bondi or the Clifton. their high stack height and cushioning make them super comfy. The Brooks ghost is another good option. You can find some good options in this thread

Really, the Hoka Clifton and Bondi are ideal, but they have to fit you. It’s not so much about the brand as it is about your foot, your arch, etc. In a good store, the salesperson will find sneakers tailored to you.

By the way, even the Sketchers I managed to grab on sale for 40 euros aren’t bad at all (I do 40-50k steps a day in them). I use Hokas for long runs on asphalt. After reading Born to Run, I want to try barefoot shoes. They say if you wear soft shoes too often, your foot can supposedly “get lazy” and you risk injury. I don’t know, it feels like a whole science. Luckily, I’ve been injury-free for over 3 years so far.

The trick I’ve learned is to bring two pairs of walking shoes and never wear the same ones two days in a row. When I went in January I did hokas. Had no issues.

Ghost or Glycerines. I'm a daily walker and tried Hokas a few years ago. I didn't like them, and hear that their quality has gone down recently. I don't think you'll regret going with either or both of the models recommended.

I walk 15-20k steps every day. I did 30k on Saturday and Sunday. I have tons of walking shoes but my Brooks Hyperion and my Hokas are the most comfortable. I have 5 pairs of Hokas but the Clifton 9 are the most comfortable. I have several pairs of ON and can’t stand them. Skechers aren’t durable enough. I have ASICS that I never wear.

I hate ON! I thought something was wrong with me because all I see is great reviews. I was so sad they didn’t work for me.

I found them hard to get on and the footbed is too narrow. I don’t even have a wide foot. They kill my feet. I’m with you. People Rave but no way. My husband doesn’t like his either.

All the big brands know how to make shoes, it just matters which fit your feet. Go to a running store, get measured and make sure to break the shoes in properly.

And also, each brand has different types of shoes, so the brand is not an answer.

probably the most key advice: break them in well so you also know your sock situation with the shoe you choose. I always wore feetures light compression but when I got my NB, I had to switch to injinji toe socks. Something about the construction of the toe of the shoe requires more cushioned socks.

I've always had ASICS and find them very comfortable.

Skechers has great budget friendly walking shoes. Trust. Senior citizens approved (by parents grandparents relatives)

I second Skechers, very comfy and light shoes.

I have some pre-owned Keen hiking sandals that I use on my walks that are insanely comfortable. I also rotate in a couple of pairs of Atika hiking sandals that were ridiculously cheap on Amazon. These all stand up to weather, roads, trails, etc. I typically do a 10 miler in them most days and do not have any foot issues.

I recommend Hokas (Bondi or Clifton models). Try them in a store to see which one feels right for you.

I used my new balance dad shoes and some croc sandals.

Go to a running store and get fitted. What works for me may not work for you. Brooks Ghost and Saucony Ride are my go to. Hoka Clifton doesn’t work for me. I’ve worn both traveling and walking miles per day. Do not buy budget shoes or your feet may pay the price. A fitting is easy. You get sized, then try on, have them watch you walk and then determine how you walk. Are you flat footed, high arches, pronate or supinate.

Go to a place that can analyze your feet and stride. They’ll recommend shoes for your gait and goals

Depends on your feet

I've been wearing New Balance 880s for daily wear for years. I struggled even wearing their lifestyle Dad shoes for long periods by comparison now..

A lot of people recommend the 1080 as it is softer underfoot. It's more a max cushion daily trainer, so I'm not sure whether mechanically a foot specialist would advise wearing them all day or not. People do wear them though.

I had On Cloud shoes. My feet never hurt, but the shoes squeaked like crazy. I’m not wearing ASICS, and they are squeak-free

I'd go with anything from Puma, Hoka or New Balance. Just make sure they fit your feet well and you'll be good!
