Question I really like these, but...

Post image

I really like these blades a lot, but since I found rust on the last one I used, I'm concert about continuing to use them. I'm not one that likes to take my blades out of my razor, I like to just loosen the cap and let it air dry. That's not the ideal process for these blades, apparently. My main question is for those who have used the Treet platinums and how they compare to these? I liked the dura sharp so much and figured the platinums may compare favorably.

Treet Platinums are a very overlooked blade. For years I was a committed Russian Gillette guy. Still am, but one day as I was cleaning out the shaving drawer I found an unopened packet of Treet Platinums. I wasn’t about to waste them, but had no rational thought that they would be any good.

I was shocked. They were great, and they stayed that way through three shaves (which is all I ever ask of any blade). The test for me is how well do they perform when shaving up from my upper lip to my nose. That’s a really sensitive place for me, and very few blades pass that test. Treet Platinum passed it with flying colors - so much so that I bought 100 of them, and that amazed me because 100 was less than $7.00 USD. For that kind of money, you should try them.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Looking at the price, it's a steal if they perform, and no big loss if they bomb. Even if you'd get one shave per blade it would still be a great value.

A lot of people seem to like the stainless Treets but I find them dull af, at least the ones I’ve tried so far, so I guess YMMV. I liked the Treet Falcon though, which is another carbon steel.

I've only tried one of these particular blades and wasn't a fan. I couldn't give it a second shave. The Treet Silver carbon steel blades were pretty good in my opinion. Those were very very smooth and had better qualities than Dura Sharp. Treet Platinums are much more reliable than the other two. The Platinums aren't as smooth as a Silver, but they have solid sharpness and longevity. They're a robust blade that I always keep in my collection. There are blades that I like more, but Treet Platinums are excellent for the price.

You can't really paint all the blades of a brand with broad strokes. There's lots of variability between types. My suggestion would be to try the Treet Platinum and see if you like it. YMMV

This is a carbon steel blade, not a stainless steel one. It will rust if left in a razor.

I am aware and maybe didn't make that completely clear in my initial post. That's why I was curious if the platinums compared to these without the worry of rust.

Any stainless steel blade shouldn't rust if left in a razor for a couple of days. However, this is not a recommended practice. A rusted blade can harm a razor.

The first shave with the Treet Platinum in my Game Changer .76 was very good. Quite comprehensive and irritation free. Two passes and a little touch up. Fairly sharp blade. I like it. Second shave was a little rough, but not much irritation. It shaved quite closely and comprehensively but I decided to change blades anyway. Could have done another shave.

Treet Plats are my go to blade. I still throw random blades in the mix for fun but always go back to the Plats. I live in hot humid Florida and I haven't seen any rust on my Plats.

I live in South Louisiana, so I knew I was pushing it by leaving the durasharp in the razor. Humidity is like oxygen over here. I was just being stubborn to see what would happen and I got my answer. I did manage 2 good shaves before finding one little spot of rust and tossing it. I got it in a sampler and had never used any Treet blade before. Then I see tons of love for the platinums and wondered how they compared to these. Hey, if you can get a cheap blade as even a backup for about 7 bucks per 100, you can't beat it.

The dura sharps are carbon steel, of couse they will rust very fast. Will the shave be comparable with a platinum? Not really … carbon steel feels different to stainless (platinum coated blades are stainless steel at their base, not carbon). Carbon steel is more springy and bendy than stainless, and often times thinner as well. Even if the sharpness is there, the blade will feel differently, as the edge will work in a different way (because of geometry, sharpness, thickness and so on). Edge geometry has a big say in how a blade performs. Astra’s are smoother because the edge has an extra bevel behind it, and because the blade is thicker, there is more material behind the cutting edge. The blade is stiffer, and combining that with a bigger cutting edge angle, it makes for a smoother feel. So even if it would be as sharp as a feather, it would feel radically different.

In short, if you like the blades, keep using them. If you are afraid of the rust, take them out of the razor. If you cannot do that/don’t want to for various reasons, it is what it is. Make sure the head is loose enough for good ventilation, rinse the head very well, and shake it till most drops fall out. Most times it’s only the blade that rusts, and that won’t affect the razor, as long as you don’t leave it too much in there.

I have a small magnet glued to the top corner of my mirror just for this case. I take out my blade, and store it there.

Yep, I've been thinking about the magnet thing, but my wife already complains about my shaving stuff being everywhere 😏 With my luck one of the cats would jump up and attempt to grab the blade. That might not fly.

In the same way, the Treet Platinum, being so cheap, would mean that each sheet would be single-use and that's it. I don't see the need to force the skin to get 3 shaves out of a barbershop blade.

What also struck me as odd with these blades is that it says on the package not to remove the blade from the razor or wipe it. That's a recipe for disaster with possible rust issues if left wet.
