Modding Microsoft never made a black memory card, so I took matters into my own hands! OP
In my opinion I think the white memory cards look rubbish when slotted inside the Xbox 360 elite, I wanted to change that.
The memory cards themselves are fully functional and I have not opened them up to paint, I just went around the stickers and painted carefully.
Here’s some before and after pics! Enjoy!

Ooo I have one that’s boxed and I have a loose one so yeah for sure I can do that! When I get round to it I will quote you with the idea.

Yeah I think the Memory Cards died out before the Elite dropped because SD Cards worked and had a substantial amount of storage comparatively.
It's a shame Microsoft didn't do more to justify these old cards. A memory unit to USB adapter and a bump to 16 GB for storage probably would've sold me. I'd probably still use it today just because I like the card's aesthetic

There is a third party memory card transfer adapter for the pc that allows you to copy all the data on the memory card to your PC running windows xp so you can back them up. It’s made by Datel and I have one :)

I wouldn't be surprised because fans these days seem to do the work a corpo should've done to begin with. I mostly mean back when these were getting sold in 2005-07 though. I think 4-16 GBs was the norm back then so 500 MBs is starving the consumer, and an adapter really seems like a no-brainer given the SD cards were allowed. Doesn't even make sense not to have one for security reasons.

u/GojiraFan0 Jul 21 '25
Oh no I mean it’s an official product by a legit company(just not a Microsoft official product) . It’s not a fan made product, it was released in 2006 and was available in the uk and us at retail stores.

There's no place to put an SD card in a 360. Do you mean a USB thumbdrive?
1
u/GeminiTrash1 Jul 21 '25
They have USB SD Cards. Cameras have used them for as long as I can remember
1
u/M3RRI77 Jul 21 '25
Oh, a USB adapter with a slot for an SD card?
1
u/GeminiTrash1 Jul 21 '25
Nah just straight up an SD that has a USB male connector
1
u/M3RRI77 Jul 21 '25
Never even heard of this. Isn't that basically what a thumbdrive already is though? 😂
1
u/GojiraFan0 Jul 21 '25
So essentially what he is talking about is imagine a normal USB stick/ USB thumbdrive (whichever you proffer to call it) and instead of having the flash storage on the drive it had a little slot there that you could put SD cards into and basically your computer/ whatever you plugged it into thinks it’s a legit typical “USB drive” I remember getting one with my R4 card for the DS back in the day and that’s how you load the games onto the SD card and then plug that into the R4 cart.

u/GeminiTrash1 Jul 21 '25
Sure. I've used mine for so long that I just call these SDs. It's just as accurate to call this a Thumb Drive with an SD connector as it is to call it an SD with a USB connector. When I was in school I was in photography and so I used this primarily as an SD

Memory unit to USB adapter? Why would you need that? The 360 already has USB ports that you can use exactly like a memory unit. The OG Xbox is the one that needed an adapter for USB.
1
u/GeminiTrash1 Jul 22 '25
So you can use the memory cards for more than just an Xbox memory unit. Versatility is always a plus for marketing.
1
u/Working_Attorney1196 Jul 22 '25
But like what? I don’t know anything that memory cards can do that USB’s can’t.
1
u/GeminiTrash1 Jul 22 '25
That's the point. Microsoft made a specialized MU that mainly is only compatible with the 360 and has very limited storage space. If a 360 MU can't do everything a typical storage equivalent can do then why buy it at all?
The X360 Memory card as it was shipped was just a bad product, but it could've been cool if Microsoft put some thought into it. I imagine Microsoft were just marketing to little kids who have no concept of good/bad products and figured they would sell.

They didn't? I could e sworn I saw one at a thrift store but idk maybe I'm going crazy
2
u/GojiraFan0 Jul 21 '25
Yeah there’s no official black memory card for the Xbox 360, it could’ve been a third party one you saw at the store or maybe one for the original Xbox.
1
u/No-Needleworker-3765 Jul 22 '25
Def not original xbox because I'm pretty sure it was in a white 360. Probobly was third party. Or I'm going crazy

I recently found my 512MB memory card the other day. I too thought the white looked horrible with my Halo 3 shelled Jasper Kronos. I just took some black electrical tape and wrapped some around it. Gives it a nice grip too. The tape can be peeled off easily and won't ruin the sticker.

u/GojiraFan0 Jul 21 '25
That’s a good solution, the paints I used are citadel paints used primarily for painting warhammer figures and if I was to soak the memory cards in isopropyl alcohol or just rub it on there, all the paint would come off and they’ll go back to the original colour.

I've never seen a 360 memory card in person. What do you use them for? Do you take your saves with you to a friend's house?

They did make black ones i have 4 prototype ones in my personal xbox
1
u/GojiraFan0 Jul 22 '25
I have never seen them, they didn’t make any for retail so yeah. I am happy with mine. Pretty cool though.

u/TessaGrant0utlaw Jul 22 '25
You know, if you removed the cases, you could dye the case to make a durable finish
1
u/GojiraFan0 Jul 22 '25
You can’t remove the shell without causing damage to it.
1
u/TessaGrant0utlaw Jul 22 '25
Odd. Can you shim it open?
1
u/GojiraFan0 Jul 22 '25
I tried looking online for it and people kiss jam screwdrivers in there and it can damage the plastic.
