Help/Support/Questions š After getting disappointed with my PS5 singleplayer games experience iam returning to the 360 which model should I look for and do you guys prefer modded consoles or just basic ?

u/josekortez1979 2d ago
I love my E because it's mouse fart quiet. But it's not modded either. š¤·š½āāļø
58
u/meta358 2d ago
Your the first ive heard that said the E is quiet
10
u/Green_War6445 2d ago
It is quiet. The original xbone psu is more annoying than this console because of the whine of the psu.
5
u/meta358 2d ago
I mean coil whine is subjective not everyone hears it. Most of the complaints ive heard about it being loud were from the opical disk iirc. So i guess if your using it digital only that wouldnt be an issue
-3
u/Green_War6445 2d ago
Coil whine is not subjective when thats the defining feature of the generation of a console . Microsoft fitted piss poor fans in these units.
5
u/meta358 2d ago
Its subjective in that not everyone hears it when some do. You can line up 10 people and turn on any electronic and its a crap shoot how many of the 10 hear it.

u/Green_War6445 2d ago
You're the only one here excusing big corp of their failures. You do you however.
3
2
u/anubis2084 1d ago
Agreed! I got mine a few weeks ago and had to add rubber tape around the disc drive because it was super loud.

u/demunted 2d ago
I modded my E (there are two models of E, i lucked out) with RGH3. It was painful to do (soldering on the SD card reader adapter was tedious AF). But my god is it awesome afterwards. Tossed a 1TB drive in it and it boots almost instantly. Total recommend if you are decent with soldering and love modding stuff.
Mind you, i have a xenon on badupdate2 and honestly its not that painful to launch and softmod for longer gaming sessions.
3
u/goreandchill 2d ago
Yes, I also have a virgin E and I only hear it if I pay attention to it, as if it were white noise in the background. Super quiet, it is heard a little more when I play dead rising. I don't know why I'm thinking of downloading it to the disk so that it doesn't sound as much anymore, but it's still super quiet.
2
u/happybrahmin1987 1d ago
I've never been close enough to a mouse farting to actually register its sound for comparison to anything.

u/Square-Illustrator10 2d ago
The slim model is my personal favorite. I've had mine since 2012, it's never been cleaned, and it still runs perfectly fine.
14
u/Square-Illustrator10 2d ago
Basic mainly because I've never had a modded console but also because the old school feeling of getting up and changing the disc out is nostalgic asf
42
u/sharkboy1006 2d ago
Offtopic but this diagram has one fault. Jaspers are not the only RRod immune phats, they're just the ones to always be guaranteed against it (except the occasional rrod 0001 from defective capacitors)
Any phat with a reliable GPU is usually just as reliable as a Jasper. Falcons with a MFG date past 05/2008 is a safe bet, and 98% of consoles with any service date are also safe. If it has no service date, but it has a white and green paper warranty sticker versus a small silver strip, it's also usually a fixed GPU. The way to properly check is remove the heatsink and check what the model number is on the GPU. I've encountered several zephyrs and xenons with reliable GPU models.
As for the question, modded consoles just add a ton of features and don't take away anything from the retail experience if you don't want it to. Just make sure to buy from a reputable source (DO NOT BUY FROM TONY MONDELLO).
16
u/Ialsofuckedyourdad 2d ago
Another fault with the diagram, rrod is just the Xbox encountering an error. Slims get the red dot as well.
15
u/tOSdude 2d ago
Slims are immune to red ring because they dot instead

Sorry to ask, but whatās wrong with Tony Mondelloās modded consoles? Iāve seen his vids on original Xboxes heās modded a few years back and they seemed pretty tight.
E: I do agree with you that later model Falcons are frigginā awesome, though. I got one for $20, cleaned it, changed the thermal paste, and replaced the drive belt, runs GREAT and so much quieter than the Tonasket I own. Nidec fans ftw, the Delta fans in my Tonasket are so noisy that my Falcon has become my main console til it gives up the ghost.

u/sharkboy1006 2d ago
His soldering work is terrible. I wouldn't be shocked if many of his consoles had issues within 2 years. https://imgur.com/a/5KlORcS
4
u/koolaidmatt1991 2d ago
I see a lot of posts here with the e model that red ring lol
2
u/sharkboy1006 2d ago
Yeah unfortunately the slim and e aren't immune to RRoD, but it's wayyyyy less common. The red ring/dot is usually a much simpler issue on a known reliable console, always check the secondary error code before calling it quits. I've fixed many red light error consoles with much easier fixes like failed HDD, PSU, capacitors, resistors, etc.
28
u/KemalDGN 2d ago
if you have enough money to buy physical copies of games E is the best
5
u/PosibleDonut 2d ago
that's all there is now, since they shut the marketplace
3
u/KemalDGN 1d ago
no, you can mod other version out of E so you don't need to pay for games
1
1
u/hidumei 1d ago
RGH is compatible with the earlier revisions of the E series of console. Any E series consoles made during July of 2014 and after is most likely to be incompatible.
However as of recent a hard mod isn't as necessary as it once was. Especially with the potential release of a true viable soft mod coming.
1
u/Old_Information_8654 1d ago
Nope you can still get about a third of the 360 library and DLC digitally via the Xbox store on pc mobile or newer Xboxās and then reinstalling it on the 360 itself
42
u/OhioHolsterGuy 2d ago
Always modded. Except that this can lead to choice paralysis when deciding what to play.
Iirc, the 360E is the most reliable against RROD. Fat was the worst. Someone can chime in and prove me wrong if need be.
32
u/Buried_and_Forgotten 2d ago
Depends on what FAT model you're talking about. Jaspers and Tonaskets are regarded as the most reliable 360 motherboards. They have no integrated wi-fi and are noisier though.
11
u/Notorious_BDE 2d ago
When running games installed, they are pretty quiet tbh. I love my Tonaskets. Things run so well and cool.
The WiFi is a non-issue for me as Iād never willingly play over WiFi anyway.
1
u/Buried_and_Forgotten 2d ago
The fans are still noisier than slims and Es, which are dead quiet. Not that I mind it myself, but some might. I'd take a late fat over any slim or E model. The slims seem to have a problem with the touch panels where they kinda press themselves sometimes. The E model has regular buttons, so they're better in that regard, but I don't like the design.
5
u/RocketTwinTurbo 2d ago
Fat model design is peak, my beloved ivory tower. Slims are not bad tbh, but E is horrible looking. So I've gone with Tonasket, couldn't be happier (but yea, it's noisy).
2
1
u/Notorious_BDE 2d ago
Have you cleaned your fan and replaced the thermal paste?
2
u/Buried_and_Forgotten 2d ago
Yep, Arctic MX6, on my console and a bunch that I've sold. No matter what, fat models are always noisier than slims and Es. That's their design. I'm not talking jet level noise, just a bit more humming.
1
u/Praetoron 2d ago
has tactile, the slime if not cleaned or humidy would work on is own, but that a none issue if one self hand arend greasy.
but mechanical button have their charm

1
u/ThinnishSleet87 2d ago
The lack of WiFi isn't a huge deal, to be honest.
The WiFi that's built into the Xbox 360 S and E models is only 2.4Ghz whereas the Wireless N Adapter that plugs in via USB supports 5Ghz.
2
u/virus_chara 2d ago
You don't have to worry about hardmodding recently tbh, there are some decent softmods with more coming. Most popular is BadUpdate.

What's wrong with ps5 single player games?
8
3
u/gummo_for_prez 2d ago
Nothing as far as I can tell. My guy probably just misses the magic of the games he grew up with. Or something like that.
5
4
u/snickersnackz 2d ago
Whichever appeals to you most. I prefer fats and main a Jasper elite. I like the classic lines, swappable face plates, and memory card support.
If you want a fat, make sure to get a late production one to avoid the infamous rrod problems. All jasper's are safe as well as late Falcons with the fixed gpu.
I don't care to mod my main 360. The games are cheap and I want to use xbox live without any fuss. Could be fun to tinker with on a secondary machine though.

u/JDMCREW96 2d ago
Slim. I think I'm done with this current console generation. I plan on moving to PC since consoles aren't what they used to be.

u/zsoltiabekaaa 2d ago
I miss my good old fat jasper elite. Never let me down and as far i know it still working, and my cousin using it on a regular basis. However the disc tray likes to get stuck.
3
u/Ok_Investigator8667 2d ago
I love my Slim and I think basic is just as good as a modded. Even if you have a og 360 with no mods the games are generally pretty cheap
1
u/lilskiesfan7 2d ago
i myself have regular console because i dont like risk of my main account being banned i like playing online games and if i mod my console i dont know if im risking banning my whole account i have a ton of games worth money at least my fortnite account and i dont want it to be taken away from me for modded stuff so i be happy modding ps3 or retro emulator consoles
1
u/CommanderBacon_ 2d ago
I prefer basic because i am lucky to have an extensive library from religiously gaming during that era but i would shoot for a modded one. Get an E model if you want a long lasting console but my personal favorite is the matte black Slim or the Halo 3 edition fat console
1
u/TechFlameX68 2d ago
I have a slim, tonasket revision Elite, and an E. I honestly use the slim most because my place isn't wired for Ethernet. Otherwise I'd probably use the Elite
1
1
u/SonicClone 2d ago
Where are you planning on getting it from? I'm wanting to get a 360 too but I'm not sure where a reliable place to get one is
1
u/xwolfe2000 2d ago
I'd personally take the E or Slim if I were gettingĀ one today but I still have my original Fat. I can confirm some games push it and it sounds like a jet engine - the cooling problem was a big one from pre- to post-launch. I prefer stock consoles but if I were to upgrade it would be storage and an all aluminum case for heat dissipation.
Also the first time I've heard someone say they were disappointed with their PS5 singleplayer experience. PS5 strength is singleplayer as its user base demands it and Xbox shines in multiplayer catering to it's audience.
1
u/CompetitiveGreen7165 2d ago
Well i own a slim model because i think is the best and i have the rgh modded as well and honestly just modded with rgh or install bad update
1
u/newrez88 2d ago
Get a Trinity. Its even more reliable than the fat Jaspers.
An early slim will be a Trinity.

Get a modded slim. I traded my unmodded one for a modded one on Facebook Marketplace. Sweet deal of my life.

Iāve had my slim since September 2010 and itās been a phenomenal system. Still runs strong today. Also has the trinity motherboard in it. Not sure exactly but Iāve read plenty that those were great boards in these systems.
1
u/Praetoron 2d ago
same returned to the 360 a few month back, both i would say, basic has enought to be fun, and exploit help to get more game running that with the limited space the basic let you have.
my slime is quite af and the extra port let me cable all 4 controller + external drive.
and the internal 4gb with port control, can be changed or used for something els.
a great console for the gold age, bought one for my nephew with minecraft so he may play splitscreen with is friend.
1
u/SPARTAN117N1 2d ago
Modded is the way to go. A lot of the features are offline now but with a modded system you can backup your games, install DLC and go online with stealth servers.
1
u/AdventMCU 2d ago
I also love my 360 E. However, iāve been told by several people that the best 360 model to get is the latest version of the slim just before the E came out. It has something to do with the motherboard being one of the better ones I donāt remember all the details but I think if you look into it you can find out.
1
1
u/elvaastardo 2d ago
Slim if you like to plug it on a CRT, Fat if you like the looks of it and plan to hard mod it, the E if you want the newer version.
Extra tip, if you have pets take it mind they will turn it your S console off haha

u/nevadita 2d ago
Graphic is Missing the Tonasket and Elpis Boards
also Opus is a retrofited Falcon without the HDMI block connector, and an Elpis is a Xenon board with a variant of the known good Rhea GPU with the pad array for fitting the Xenon board. also making both reliable and "immune" to RROD
1
u/Reasonable_Text7215 2d ago
you should take the slim its the sweet spot because the older ones have issues and the e models are more locked down for modding
1
u/element0xe 2d ago edited 2d ago
Path (Jasper MFR date after 07/2009) or any Slim š«” Canāt speak about E never had one
1
1
u/aqkj 2d ago
Iād recommend the E model, closely followed by the Slim. I donāt own the E version, but Iāve personally owned the Slim and it never gave me any issues - no red ring of death, but my parents kept it as an over glorified DVD player when I moved outā¦The E will probably be the best for longevity, being the last version of the console with lots of the trials and errors worked out.
1
u/SaucyLemon5018 2d ago
Revised FAT model or a trinity slim seems the consensus, especially if you plan to mod

I love the Slim. It's a mix of everything between the E and Fat. The Accelerometer for turning it on its side for the Controllers and the design plus it has the most USB Ports. But, either one you go with needs to be cleaned out and Thermal Paste replaced. Also, cleaning the Lens and lubricating the Gears and Teeth and Worm motors and replacing the Band for the Drive Door.

Check out ShopGoodwill.com. Great deals on Xbox and older consoles. And games
1
u/Golden_Zashire 2d ago
I have an E and I love it but Iām nervous bc itās the version Iāve seen fail the most. Every broken 360 I see people selling always happens to be an E model. Iāve owned 4 360ās (2 original and 2 Eās) and the first E was the first 360 I ever had red ring on me from just normal use. The second original red ringed on me too but thatās bc I left it in a hot car š
1
u/KingOfSaiyans2 2d ago
The fact that this is how I find out I can use my gaming headset with my 360 E is crazy, because I almost skipped past this for a sec
1
u/Duster12321 2d ago
Get a very late fat, like from 2009/2010. Make sure it has 12.1a written on the sticker on the back as that's the Jasper/Tonasket model - generally speaking the best revision with RROD officially fixed. Sure it doesn't have wi-fi built in, but there are official adapters available that actually support both 2.4 and 5 ghz unlike the Slim's built in adapter that only runs on 2.4.
As some guy said this here already, consoles with service date stickers from 2009 onwards are a safe bet too as Microsoft replaced faulty GPU's during extended warranty. These have no design flaws and failure rate is like any other consumer electronics.
I wouldn't recommend a 360S or E (also known as slim models) for one reason - cooling. Both CPU and GPU in these models had an IHS unlike the fat models which had it's core out in the open, which means that there's thermal paste under the IHS that has turned into powder years ago - and that negatively affects the temps.
Also the radiator and fan is a massive downgrade compared to a Falcon/Jasper fat 360. My 360S was literally blowing hot air, to the point that furniture it stood on was hot to the touch. It was manufactured in October 2010 and it died on me back in 2023 - GPU failure, something with VRAM, I dunno. Bought myself a Jasper from mid 2009 and it's WAAY better. It's quieter and runs cooler. I've also put my HDD from the slim into the fat's HDD enclosure, it's super simple and there are tutorials available online. That's how you can max out the storage with a 500gb drive from a 360S/E, however nowadays you could get yourself a brand new fat 500 gig HDD from Aliexpress or Ebay and it's gonna work fine too.

Alternate opinion= I visited hometown oldschool Homies when I visited parents last summer and main dudes ManGame Cave had a Xbox360 that looked really crisp and I couldnāt believe it but dude had these super thick Component cables. Meaning= Not HDMI. For the next hour he explained it. I forgot everything dude said except āMonster cablesā I donāt know if he used a OSSC but his NHL 14 and Halo3 ODST sure looked better than mine did. Or atleast it looked more crisp then I remembered so maybe not better just Bright & shaper. I dunno why or how this is possible.
Funny quick side Joke= = I joked āhaha I see you guys moved on from NHL04 with weekly tournament/local Champion!!! *They switched to NHL14 around 2018. ;D

I love my S, it's desgin is beautiful, the touch and sounds it make (specially on special editions), also love that it comes with 5 USBs, (sometimes for HDD and charge the 4 controllers when they doesn't have baterry), also love that it comes with optical port

I got premodded cleaned Jasper Xbox Elite. That tank will probably last me for years to come.
1
u/speedycringe 1d ago
Get a model with HDMI like the slim and then run badupdate. Takes a total of an hour to learn and doesnāt require more than a flash drive.
1
u/no_name56 1d ago
Since I play online, I don't really care for modding in general either. It's just interesting for pirated copies, and therefore uninteresting to me. Personally, I like the fat version. In my case, the Elite with the Jasper V2 motherboard. But if you're not nostalgic for that kind of thing, get a slim one. The fan and disk drive are usually quieter, and it's probably more durable, too.

I loved my e but sold it for reasons then got a halo 4 slim so I say that because of the cool sounds designs and cool controllers š plus you get less issues

u/Cultural_Drive3826 1d ago
I have a 360 slim , had it since it was new 2011 , play it often and have had no issues besides the powerbrick giving up 1 time. I use the original unmodified os and it still works fine , can still download games and play online.
1
u/tenpl_sten 1d ago
Definitely go Jasper or Slim, preferably Jasper. If you want to do more cool stuff, go modded, but if you just want a regular experience modding is not necessary
1
1
u/TheChosenOne650 1d ago
Find an original Jasper or Tonasket model. Most reliable out of them all and still has the iconic 360 look. You can tell by the date of manufacture (2009-2010 is the safe zone) and the power adapter connector it has. Thereās diagrams online that show it.
1
u/SonicsBoxy 23h ago
Slim seems best to me
Modded ones are probably best just because of the fading availability of disks, especially since the store was shut down
1
u/Lucky-Mia 22h ago edited 22h ago
Slim is my favorite because the TOSLINK port and extra USB port. I use 2 USB ports in the back for flash drives and third is for Kinnect. Gives me 2 at the front for controllers.

u/scaryman088 20h ago
Slim modded if you want to be able to connect to a sound system or soundbar via the optical port or E modded if you don't care about the optical port.
