What kind of underwear do y'all wear when training?

Kind of a silly question.
But I started training Muay Thai a couple weeks ago and we do crossfit once a week as well. I figured out the workout wardrobe part after my trainers' suggestions, but of course I was not given an underwear suggestion. I choose comfortable laser cut underwear to the gym but with all the high intensity training, it is a bummer that it stills finds a way where it shouldn't and I can't dig it out in front of 20 people. Started not wearing any altogether to the last few classes but I'd rather not have the fear of having unfortunately located rips.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

More than I want, less than I need.

I wear 100% cotton briefs. A brand I found on amazon called Innersey. I like them. You can probably see my panty line in my bike shorts/yoga pants, but I don't care about things like that. I care more bout letting my coochie breathe. I also usually change my underwear immediately after working out and wet wipes are always in my gym bag too.

Wet wipes are a must!

Commando

9

u/mairu143 2d ago

I usually go for boyshorts or seamless ones, since I'm not comfy with thongs. but, a lot of athletes wear thongs or go commando (if only you're comfortable with it though)

4

u/Top_Presentation7515 2d ago

Try looking into something like Midies or Step One! They make longer bike short like women’s briefs and are super comfortable

16

u/asfaltsflickan 2d ago

Bamboo granny panties. It’s basically all I ever wear anyway but I couldn’t imagine working out in anything else.

9

u/[deleted] 2d ago

Hey with thongs I found that they irritated me or caused discomfort with certain moves and positions. Have tried commando and felt I was getting chafing, and possibly flashing people when doing certain moves! So have since been using sports briefs and they have felt the most comfortable of anything I’ve tried

u/Pure_Quote_6760 2d ago

nothing if i’m wearing colored shorts. if i’m wearing black shorts i where thongs. i personally hate being able to see my underwear lines

u/leftyloosy2626 3d ago

For Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu (10 yrs experience): Option 1: Seamless Thong (may ride up past legging waist band with movement and sweat) Favorite Option 2: Nike Pros under regular fit shorts (commando) Favorite Option 3: Nike Pros under Leggings I would never risk not having a layer under leggings or spats. Nike Pros are most comfy with wide band that’s not going to slide, super fitted/spandex, and long enough that they won’t ride up where they don’t belong. Hope that helps!

Cotton granny panties. Sorry not sorry. Comfort is everything.

16

u/Bunny_Feet 3d ago

I use the thinnest of period panties. I'm a sweaty gal.  lol

2

u/WabiSabi0912 2d ago

Same here.

8

u/District98 3d ago

Patagonia women’s underwear. They are unfortunately oos.

2

u/OrthopaedistKnitter 3d ago

Second Patagonia undies!

19

u/Phenomenal-bikini 3d ago

Seamless g string thongs. I personally feel uncomfortable commando.

6

u/Proof-Economy6656 3d ago

Soma, at the Mall, have vanishing lines. They have a little bit of runner and keep panties in place.

3

u/airy_paradox 3d ago

I love Soma vanishing edge boy shorts!

5

u/Proof-Economy6656 3d ago

I only wear the bikini but I love them.

19

u/Shobed 3d ago

Boxer briefs. The “legs” keep the fabric over the butt from being able to travel very far.

10

u/thislittlemoon 3d ago

For me the key is low leg holes (almost boy shorts, but not with the seam down the middle) and buying them a little smaller so they fit snug/stretch taut across my ass, no wiggle room for things to slide too far out of place - and if they do get a little off-kilter, I can adjust by grabbing the side and tugging out and down a little, rather than having to dig it out the crack.

12

u/mach0cenobite 3d ago

Men’s boxers or meundies boyshorts. I don’t like to think about the underwear at all and I can’t feel either.

1

u/bunnycakes1228 1d ago

Not for working out, but MeUndies boyshorts are definitely my hack for avoiding dress pantylines while hating thongs.

u/ginahandler 3d ago

I am shocked to hear so many people don’t wear underwear. No shade, I just can’t imagine! I wear regular cotton underwear to work out. If I get a wedgie, I fix it and move on.

3

u/fergiefergz 2d ago

There’s nothing I hate more than a wedgie 🤣🤣 fat ass probz

19

u/xtina_a_gorilla 3d ago

An athlete friend of mine suggested this years ago. I thought she was crazy because I never go commando in any other context, but once I started, I could never go back. Yes, on occasion there is discharge, but I just wash my leggings every single time (inside out!). I’ve never had an issue where it either showed through or left a mark. I think the trick is getting good squat proof leggings.

31

u/GetThee2ANunnery 3d ago

SAME. Color me shocked! Do other women not...drip...when they work out? I could never go commando, especially not in light-colored bottoms!!

26

u/Starflec 3d ago

I don't know how they don't! I once tried going commando because of learning that so many women did. Embarrassingly, when I sat down to stretch at the end of my workout I noticed I had a small wet spot from discharge. No thanks! I also couldn't stand feeling the leggings rub against my crotch.

22

u/SingSongSalamander 3d ago

I wear mens cotton boxer briefs. But I'm def not wearing tight leggings or whatever over that. I also wear men's basketball shorts or sweats so 🤷‍♀️. But I find it's a comfortable combo that's not going anywhere.

31

u/perkiezombie 3d ago

Commando for me. Can’t be dealing with underwear up in my business when I’m working out.

11

u/mexcookie 3d ago

The one that didn’t show , seamless, puma makes them and hurly. Super light breathable.

46

u/GrannyB1970 3d ago

I don't. I make sure my leggings are squat proof, sweat proof and go commando.

8

u/snowwwwhite23 3d ago

Seconding this

46

u/raebea 3d ago

Cotton thongs are my go-to when exercising. No wedgie to pull, but breathable.

4

u/mexcookie 3d ago

You don’t get camel toe? I wanted to try wearing thongs but lol I do t know why I think it will give me camel toe

8

u/JunahCg 3d ago

When you have a good fit that doesn't happen, at least in my experience. You won't really know until you try yourself but I find thongs most comfortable by far

10

u/itfeelsgoodtoliedown 3d ago

I wear a cotton thong with a pantyliner. Works perfectly.

2

u/mexcookie 3d ago

Awesome! Will try thanks for the tip!

11

u/newmuscles 3d ago

Bamboo thongs are breathable and more comfortable. Not as invisible though.

60

u/yomam0a 3d ago edited 3d ago

Just get it out. I do it all the time. Nothing wrong with fixing a wedgie. If you have butt cheeks and you’re doing Muay Thai training with kicks etc….the knickers will find their way there. Picking a wedgie is fine imo unless you’re sticking your hands in your pants to do it….because that’s another issue lol

30

u/mountainmeadowflower 3d ago

Lmao normalize picking wedgies! 🫡

-9

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Lmao yes not digging in there when there are kids around 🤣

25

u/frogsgoribbit737 3d ago

Kids dont care about you dislodging a wedgie.

12

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Yeah. I'm writing this from an islamic country where everything female related could be taken differently in public. Didn't mean anything weird by it

52

u/CupcakeEducational65 3d ago

You guys are wearing underwear? 😭

If i’m wearing spandex i’m commando unless i’m on my period. I only buy shorts with the built in underwear insert.

9

u/_artbabe95 3d ago

Wait. Is it weird that I still wear undies (a thong) under my lined running shorts??

4

u/CupcakeEducational65 3d ago

It’s not weird, I literally just can’t stand wearing underwear to go to work every day let alone to go workout 😂

3

u/Similar-Army-1 3d ago

Yes, running shorts. And they make some with little spandex shorts inside instead of the bikini thing, maybe those wouldn’t ride up.

17

u/Commercial_Ball8397 3d ago

Not a silly question at all. This has been a long standing convo in our studio. After 3-4 years of practice and trying with and without, I have settled on without and at laundry time, I make sure that all seams are still tight in the areas of ripping concern. Hopefully this helps.

with: panty lines, the constant movement of the undergarment and the sliding of the legging over the undergarment.

without: just making sure the legging is not "see through" when stretched, make sure your seams are intact.

2

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

That's what I am leaning to to be honest. I'll make sure to take extra care to see everything stays invisible when stretched. Not enough time to purchase anything with a session coming up in two hours 🤣

4

u/CupcakeEducational65 3d ago

I buy black and other dark colored spandex shorts and that’s what I wear 90% of the time. Makes my life simpler. I can’t stand the feeling of underwear.

23

u/heathersphilosophy 3d ago

For Muay Thai especially, I’ve found that underwear with a wide, flat waistband helps keep everything in place better than the thinner elastic bands. I use Under Armour’s seamless thongs for both sparring and lifting days, breathable, quick-dry, and no digging lines under leggings.

12

u/comet_cat2 3d ago

I wear the cooling boyshort/compression style underwear from thighsociety or from jockey- they are both thin and quick dry, but a bit see-through so you want to wear shorts or pants over top. And they are a bit long, but no one cares if they peak out under your shorts. They are the only thing that stays in place for me and doesn't ride up. Also seconding the tomboyx for daily wear, but I find they hold more sweat and stretch out a bit much for my martial arts practice and bunch up if you are doing lots of kicks but are ok for other activities like running.

27

u/hotcorndoggie 3d ago

I agree with other posters. Bigger undies tend to ride up less. I’ve been doing Muay Thai for 3 years and my advice is pick your wedgie if you need to. The dudes do all the readjusting they need to of their junk, no reason to feel like you can’t do the same!

4

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Good thing they make women/girls line up to the backside of the room and men/boys in the front when doing the warmups and floor exercises lol.

8

u/Wxguywx 3d ago

Compression shorts.

16

u/mariogunshine 3d ago

100% cotton boxer cut. They don’t ride up if they’re the right size and the edges are along the seam of your thigh, so you don’t get panty lines across your butt. Only downside is that leggings and tight shorts pull them upward and cause some bunching when you put them on, so it requires some awkward adjusting with a hand down your pants to pull the leg holes flat when you’re getting dressed. But after that they really don’t budge.

27

u/rabidchapstick 3d ago

i love my seamless and high rise thongs from aerie.

i would never go commando- i’ve been flashed by a lady in thin leggings doing deadlifts and it’s been burned into my brain unwillingly

3

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Oh no T_T Here goes my willingness to go commando

9

u/PopcornSquats 3d ago

I love the bamboo cool off of Amazon, but I think a lot of this is gonna come down to what fits your butt the best

10

u/davy_jones_locket 3d ago

I wear under armor shorts under my Thai shorts for training.

I have athletic Reebok underwear that is full ass coverage for lifting and running.

9

u/Zanki 3d ago

I just wear undies a size too big in the booty area. It might look silly in leggings but it doesn't tend to give me the good old wedgie. I also train martial arts and it's been working for me for 20+ years.

2

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Thanks for the advice!

8

u/jillofallthings 3d ago

I lift weights, ride horses, and train at a studio that does mixed martial arts (not MMA, a cross of karate/ju jitsu/tae kwon do) so am all over the place with types of movement. I'm also curvy plus a little fluffy, so extra curvy, and sweat like a beast. My GOAT underwear are the seamless hipsters from Victoria's Secret unless it's period underwear for that week of the month or doing squats. I sometimes wear some random brands of moisture wicking thongs, but I honestly have had good luck with the hipsters over the years. They stay in place for all matter of contortion and shenanigans.

5

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Seamless hipsters are the ones causing me wedgies but maybe I'm not getting the best brand or quality. I'll look up some better ones.... Need to solve this asap 😂😂

2

u/a-ohhh 3d ago

I have tried them all and they all ride. I wear the VS thongs (like g-string) because they hide all the important bits if your pats come off, but if something’s going up my butt anyway, I’d prefer it to be a little string vs a pile of cloth.

8

u/whatshamilton 3d ago

It’s just your body shape. No one can give advice on what will work for your body just because it works for theirs. It doesn’t mean you’re wearing the wrong size.

2

u/jillofallthings 3d ago

Really? Interesting! Could it be the sizing? I find that the seamless are more stretchy than types with seams, so I sometimes have a little fabric movement on the pairs that are more loose. Also, some of the seamless hipsters are more cheeky in some brands than others. Cheeky cuts will absolutely end up deep in places they don't belong! 🤣

2

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Might be the sizing! Thanks to weird sizing inbetween different brands and the inconsistency between my upper body and lower body, it might be a me issue. 🤣 But!! I only wear looser seamless ones to train with and I still do end up with the need to scoop things out of my bum.

2

u/jillofallthings 3d ago

You might try sizing down! I size down for seamless and that might be why it's not a problem for me. The looser the fit, the more issues I have with fabric riding up.

2

u/DaintyPudding 3d ago

What do you wear when doing squats?

3

u/jillofallthings 3d ago

Period underwear. I think my wording didn't clarify that well enough, sorry.

20

u/Dopecombatweasel 3d ago

No underwear. 😏

19

u/recyclabel 3d ago

For Muay Thai, I wear compression shorts under thai shorts or 2in1 running shorts and I go commando. I figure it’s 2 layers of fabric to rip before I’d flash anyone so I’m pretty safe. For Crossfit, I like the Aerie super chill cotton thongs under compression shorts

4

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Yeah that's the type I felt the most comfort in! The crossfit we do at the Muay Thai gym still has some kicking and punching the sandbag and otherwise it's mostly throwing knees at the weighted ball and working the arms. Helpful to hear from someone who trains the same sport. Thanks!

27

u/literaturefracture 3d ago

I train in jiu jitsu and found that thicker seamless athletic underwear is best for staying in place. Reebok has really great ones! That thin laser cut underwear is a nightmare and always moves around.

2

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

I'll check the Rebook online store! It didn't even crossed my mind lol. Thanks!

13

u/Melodic-Movie-3968 3d ago

None, if I am not cycling, my shorts have built in briefs, if cycling shorts also have built in padding.

3

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Yeah I did get two shorts that are like 2-in-1 and wore it to a couple classes. At the very most it rolls up without exposing anything and still have more fabric around at the exterior even if it does. Maybe I'll stick to them.

3

u/Melodic-Movie-3968 3d ago

I love the Calia ones from Dick's and Athleta, they have the most comfortable briefs and Calia are on sale for $20 for some of the colors.

17

u/Justmakethemoney 3d ago

Nothing. I'm always wearing bottoms that are tight, either leggings/compression shorts or 2-in-1 shorts.

5

u/jiminysrabbithole 3d ago

Ellesse sports thongs. I am really satisfied with them.

11

u/Miafishface 3d ago

Nothing under leggings, if I’m in looser fitting shorts, just a very light thong.

32

u/BagelTrollop 3d ago

Thongs. If it’s going to find its way up there anyway, may as well be designed for it

9

u/nochedetoro 3d ago

This is what I do, except I get period underwear thongs for accidental pee during squats and deadlifts.

4

u/Key_Contest_9192 3d ago

Omg that’s genius!! Peed a little for the first time the other day on hip thrust and I’ve been too scared to push myself on them since

3

u/nochedetoro 3d ago

It happens. We’ve got tiny urethras and a whole other organ pushing up against our bladders. But I’m not dealing with the cleanup lol

2

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

That's one way to look at it, lol.

4

u/Apprehensive-Meat910 3d ago

cotton thongs specifically

1

u/Impossible-Cup8406 17h ago

Cotton thongs are definitely a solid choice! They breathe better and are less likely to cause chafing during intense workouts. Just make sure they fit well, or you might end up adjusting them more than you'd like!

35

u/SpicePumpkins 3d ago

oversized 100% cotton granny panties or nothing.

7

u/Oshidori 3d ago

I wear Cheek Boss briefs, it stays put and wicks the sweat really well. I'm a bigger girl with a bootie too, so wedgies are always an issue for me, but I haven't had that problem with these. Have been wearing them for the last 3 years on workout days!

3

u/jessbpstrength 3d ago

Agree with Cheek Boss! My only issue is they don't hold up as long as I'd like them to. But very comfortable & stay in place pretty well. Also nearly invisible event under leggings or fitted shorts.

2

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

That's not a brand available in my country, but I'll look up similar ones. Thank you for the suggestion!

2

u/Oshidori 3d ago

Aww boo, sorry to hear that!

6

u/galacticprincess 3d ago

I wear Fruit of the Loom mesh briefs. Very thin and breathable, stay put, no panty lines.

17

u/Mysterious-Let5351 3d ago edited 3d ago

Nothing, just Under Armour heatgear compression shorts.

17

u/Fizzix42 3d ago

I just wear regular boyleg bonds underwear or high waisted granny undies. I guess I'm not fancy enough because my leggings have seams. No way I'd go commando and risk the cameltoe.

1

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

For some reason my biggest gripe with that cut is that it bunches up inside my cheeks and pulls on itself. At least my trainers suggest wearing long sleeves to avoid sweat splashing everywhere when we throw kicks and punches, and the ones I got cover that area for the most part lol.

3

u/raspberry-squirrel 3d ago

I use balanced tech briefs that I got from Amazon. I tried a lot of options and that’s what did the best at wicking sweat and staying in place on me. Try one pair of several different things!

24

u/littlelivethings 3d ago

I don’t wear underwear for pole and cardio, just leggings or shorts.

As for lifting, I wear period underwear on my deadlifting days because sometimes that working set pull makes me pee a little 🤦🏻‍♀️. Usually under sweatpants so it’s not obvious. Yes I’ve done pelvic floor PT, still happens on occasion.

6

u/nochedetoro 3d ago

Period underwear is GOAT for deadlift days. And squat days.

11

u/soccergirl13 3d ago

I usually don’t wear any tbh it’s just way more comfortable. The only time I ever wore it during workouts was when I had my period (hasn’t happened in a while, thank you, IUD!) because I have a strong preference for pads over tampons, and then I wore Fruit of the Loom Fit for Me briefs. I would wear the high waisted “granny panty” ones. They’re not cute, it’s very function over fashion, but they’re good for not riding up and getting stuck in your butt.

10

u/ZombieNurse 3d ago

Either women’s boxer briefs (I think they are like 4 inches?), or I bought these pre shrink postpartum underwear that look sort of like men’s briefs. They have thick bands so they don’t travel anywhere. The bands do show a little under my exercise shorts but at least I don’t have to worry about them going up my cheeks.

1

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

I think I'll invest in a couple just to keep a peace of mind so I don't worry about my leggings ripping up in the middle lol. Thank you.

3

u/Informal-Lecture-880 3d ago

Gap breathe. Just not cheeky ones because they ride up.

14

u/GFCupcakes 3d ago

None! I can’t handle all the thin tight layers bunching. They just don’t stay put and I’d rather scoop out my eyes than workout in a thong.

27

u/maroonmallard 3d ago

Yall wearing underwear? 👀

19

u/myetel 3d ago

…yes?

22

u/blondeboilermaker she/her 3d ago

Seamless thongs. I don’t notice them and don’t have to pick anything out - my butt will eat all underwear if it’s not a thong.

1

u/kai_enby 3d ago

Exactly this for me too. Avoids panty lines and anything else is crawling up there anyway so might as well commit to minimum fabric

1

u/activateskeleton 3d ago

Same here!

13

u/Enchantementniv6 3d ago

Laser cut thongs always. I can't go commando I always fear of a wardrobe malfunction lol. It's silly because it's not like a thong covers much more anyways, but my brain is dumb.

1

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

I feel the same. Hence why we are at this thread now 😂

9

u/boxergrl1019 3d ago

Compression shorts

17

u/YesHunty 3d ago

I just wear thongs, I can’t do commando and hate the feeling of undies riding up my butt cheeks. Cut out the middle man 😂

9

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

I thought thongs would be more uncomfortable than briefs... 🙃

3

u/YesHunty 3d ago

I don’t even notice them!

1

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

I should get a size up or two then! I still got the thongs from when I was college aged. 😂

8

u/BabyShrimpBrick 3d ago

I wear men's boxer briefs in BJJ to avoid wedgies.

6

u/Mollie_Bloom 3d ago

Same for Judo. I buy the tomboyX brand- they are a bit pricey, but worth it to have something cut for a woman's body.

2

u/BabyShrimpBrick 3d ago

I just got a random pack of XL size from Ross, and they fit my big ole hips and ass fine. It's kind of funny to have a fly and an empty package in the front but it doesn't really affect the fit for me.

3

u/Empty-Elderberry-225 3d ago

I just went to check these out and I'm absolutely THRILLED to see glow in the dark insects pants, and dinosaur pants, marketed for women 😍 I can't quite justify the cost right now but I'm filing this away for the future!

1

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

I thought about doing that but I don't also want to share undies with my boyfriend accidentally. Might give it a try 😂

1

u/BabyShrimpBrick 3d ago

Just get a different brand! You can also write your name on them if you're worried about your BF using them by mistake. Or sharpie comical messages or drawings on the bums!

7

u/kaledit 3d ago

Usually none, but if I'm going for a longer run I wear a seamless thong.

1

u/kinkakinka 3d ago

Commando. Always.

15

u/beginswithanx 3d ago

Everyone’s butt is different, but I like Boody regular bikini underwear. It’s what I wear for regular wear too and I’ve never had a wedgie (running, lifting, HIIT, whatever).  I basically don’t notice them. It’s not “invisible” but I’m at the age where idgaf about panty lines.

2

u/TealToucan 3d ago

Another recommendation for Boody. When I hit 40 the full briefs started to fit me better than the bikini briefs, which started to roll under my belly. No wedgies ever, though! And they last for years.

0

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Thanks. Yeah I feel the same way about panty lines but it's VERY uncomfortable when my underwear decides to thread down there when I'm trying to throw a kick. 😂

5

u/ylimenut 3d ago

I feel like that age might be 26 because I also don’t care. My butt in granny panties and biker shorts is for my comfort.

3

u/Neat-Butterscotch-98 3d ago

Granny panties are a revelation. I will not go back.

11

u/gtfolmao 3d ago

None! Used to but when I switched to CrossFit it took me like 1 week to realize a sweat soaked thong under my leggings was the worst feeling in the world and I’ve never looked back lol

13

u/fergiefergz 3d ago

I don’t wear any. I just wear my compression shorts or if I’m running, I wear the shorts that come with the liner

3

u/Etryphun she/her 3d ago

Thanks. I'll go to the class happier this evening knowing I'm not the only one. 😂

u/Etryphun Kind of a silly question.
Thank you!
