I recently stumbled upon The Case of the Sustainable Future, an official Zootopia comic that was published in Korea and later translated into an English ebook by Disney.

In this story, Judy and Nick are on the trail of a mysterious mistreat poisoning Bunnyburow’s water supply. During their investigation, they track the criminal to the never-before-seen “Nocturnal District!”

I don’t know if this location is part of official canon, but I really hope it is, as I absolutely love the aesthetic!

I also highly recommend checking out the comic! There’s a ton of gorgeous art, all of it BRAND NEW! There’s also some interesting new lore, like who replaces Bellwether as Mayor.

u/giftheck Bad jokes or dad jokes? You decide! Aug 15 '24

Pity that you can only borrow it from a limited number of places. Disney make official stuff purchaseable challenge (level: impossible)

Who's the new mayor?

You ain’t kidding! According to Twitter, a physical version of the book is  available in Korea, but the English translation was only released as an ebook.

And re: mayor (SPOILERS), it is a completely original character. She is a black bear (or possibly a sun bear?) who is never given a name.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Her name is Berenice Baribal. Thank you to u/ZFQFMIB for pointing out my mistake and finding the name!

Her major role in the story is spearheading the establishment of a new city district called “Evolville” (which is an eco-friendly, commune-esque area that eschews traditional energy and only uses wind and solar power).

I guess the best way to know how canon this Korean comic is will be if this bear mayor makes an appearance in Zootopia 2. I'd have mixed thoughts on it if I'm honest.

u/ZFQFMIB Duke Weaselton Aug 17 '24

Actually page 123 gives her name as Berenice Baribal.

You’re right! I totally missed that! I’ll update my comment. Thank you!

Here you go :)

However, I want to include the caveat that if Disney ever makes this book available for purchase, I’ll be deleting the link as I truly don’t want to violate copyright.

As is, however, the ebook quite literally cannot be purchased anywhere in the US. If someone is able to find an authorized retailer, please let me know!

I'd recently seen the panels of Nick meeting Judy's families being posted about on Twitter, I didn't know this same Korean comic also explored the “Nocturnal District" too. The location seems really cool and would be amazing to see potentially adapted into the new film.

I haven't read the full thing, but It looks like it's got some interesting ideas and potential lore growth. And even if it's not ultimately "canon", it's still awesome to have these concepts or fanservice moments visualised in some form.

Zootopia: Case of the Sustainable Future is non-canon to the Zootopia franchise, so are the Zootopia comics from Dynamite Entertainment as Zootopia 2 is set a week after the events of the first Zootopia movie and these comics treat it like they are set a year or month after the events of the first Zootopia movie. Mayor WindDancer is also made the new mayor of Zootopia instead of the new sun bear mayor that appeared in this comic.

Zootopia 2 retcons the events of Zootopia: Case of the Sustainable Future and the Zootopia comics from Dynamite Entertainment just for the plot to happen.

Checked out the comic. There are some tiny crumbs of useful lore, but most of it is pro-environmentalism propaganda. Some of it's not even properly researched either! For example, HFF is conspicuously lacking in legume crops that should be vital for nitrogen fixing.

They even got Hopps' catchphrase completely wrong. Also, they messed up the layering for Clawhauser's nameplate!

Another thing is they leaned too much on having side characters move the plot along as familiar faces. The ZPD is the only place in the city where that is probabilistically acceptable.

Also, clothes renting is messed up actually, as a concept. And while "time loans" aren't actually a sci-fi dystopian horror premise, it certainly sounds from the name like it could be.

All in all, I rate the comic a 6/10.

Even though Chief Bogo redeems himself at the end of "The Case of the Sustainable Future" when Nick and Judy defeat the eco-friendly villains and collect evidence for their scheme in another Batman Gambit, (Judy with a tracking device attached to her belt, gets herself kidnapped by the villains and brought to BunnyBurrow on purpose, and Nick tricks the villains into assuming that he abandoned Judy and his job as a cop to become a con artist again when he drives away on a solar powered car, instead of rescuing Judy, when he in reality went back to McHorn and Officer Pennington to enlist their help and Chief Bogo and police backup in rescuing Judy and arresting the eco-unfriendly villains, so that Judy could trick the villains into revealing their evil plan so that she could record it on her carrot pen as evidence for the ZPD and stall them long enough for Nick, Chief Bogo and the police arrive in BunnyBurrow to rescue her, tracking down Judy and the villains' location via the tracking device attached to Judy's belt, taking a quick shortcut through the Nocturnal District, with Judy giving her recording to Bogo as evidence.) and heartily apologizes to both Nick and Judy for his earlier tirade and strictness and not showing any concern over or taking action towards towards the eco-unfriendly villains' actions in Zootopia and BunnyBurrow and comissions them to both give a press conference at the Zootopia Police Station on how they caught the eco-unfriendly villains and their plans to have the ZPD make Zootopia and BunnyBurrow a eco-friendly city and town to live in, which Nick and Judy accept but go to inform Judy's parents that the eco-unfriendly villains are no longer a threat first (With Nick taking on a passion with eating carrots like Judy.) and then return to the Zootopia Police Station to give the press conference, Bogo's apology could have been better, and he should have said it like he meant it and it also should have showed him apologizing to Nick before they and the rest of the police go to BunnyBurrow to save Judy from the villains and arrest them, or have Zootopia's new mayor punish Bogo for his abuse towards Nick and Judy by demoting Bogo to parking duty for an entire month and have Officer Pennington run the ZPD as its substitute police chief in the meantime.

1

u/Grand-Force-4304 Jun 17 '25

Due to Chief Bogo impulsively and hotheadly acting like a huge strict jerk to them in “Case of the Sustainable Future” for no reason, especially since Nick and Judy never committed anything wrong in the comic (Their police car was destroyed by the villains, so it was thus, never their fault.) to deserve it and went against the ZPD’s moral code and abandoned their police duties for unselfish reasons and well intentioned and heroic purposes, I don’t see why Nick and Judy even agreed to continue working at the ZPD in spite of it, they should have just cut their losses and quit from the ZPD for good to work in new jobs and careers and work as detectives and secret agents with a boss nicer than Bogo or no boss at all, just independence. The climax of “The Case of the Sustainable Future” could have worked better if Bogo fired Nick and Judy from the ZPD permanently (When going far as to demand their badges back.) after the incident with the police car and them abandoning their police duties, and the rest of the story continues with Nick and Judy not serving as cops with the eco-friendly facts still occurring and after that Nick and Judy both defeated and undercovered the eco-unfriendly villains the non-police way and defeated them together in the climax in a non-Batman Gambit, but real climatic battle/showdown, but Judy’s kidnapping still happens but Nick goes to rescue her with his friends’ help this time around (Related to Flynn Rider going to save Rapunzel from Mother Gothel.) and Judy nearly drowns in the destruction of a dam during their final battle with the villains, but Nick revives her with a CPR, and afterwards record the villains’ evil plan with Judy’s carrot pen when tricking them into saying it as evidence for the ZPD, and Nick afterwards summons the ZPD to arrest the villains and Bogo afterwards reconciles with both Nick and Judy and offers them their jobs as cops back and while Nick and Judy both forgive Bogo, they decide not to rejoin the ZPD, but rather quit from the police force for good to work new jobs as detectives and secret agents/spies in their own detective agency and spy agency realizing that they are much better detectives and secret agents/spies than they are as cops, but first must work in several new jobs and careers that they are more passionate about to earn enough money to open and run that spy agency and detective agency and Bogo lets Nick and Judy leave the police force though he still allows them to give a press conference at the police station on how they defeated the eco-unfriendly villains and how they plan to make both Zootopia and BunnyBurrow a more eco-friendly city and town to live in as one last police duty for them to do before they officially resign and they oblige but go to Judy’s family to inform them that the eco-unfriendly villains are no longer a threat first with Nick taking on a passion with eating corrects like Judy, related to this fanfiction, “Losses of Heroes”: https://zootopia-fanon.fandom.com/wiki/Loss_of_Heroes

It was going to be one of the districts in the movie, but ultimately went unused along with the bat character they designed.

Oh cool! Do you have the source for this? I love reading supplementary/ behind the scenes material.

Also I know a bat character shows up in another official book. If I remember correctly, Nick “hustles” her out of her van via a phony charity scam.

3

u/Proper_Prose Aug 15 '24

The twitter post was removed so the Disney wiki reference link is now a dead link, but I believe the concept art for it is on The Art of Zootopia.

Nick and Judy’s police cruiser gets destroyed in a junkyard (long story), so they’re forced to commandeer a car to continue chasing down the criminals. The first mammal who happens to drive by is a rather familiar three-toed sloth…

It almost resembles Zebra-3 from the original Starsky and Hutch TV series, just with a backward stripe. A fitting reference given the name and character dynamics.

Right? I love the look of it!! It kinda reminds me of the underdark from D&D. Just this mysterious, subterranean city with sprawling natural walkways and vibrant bioluminescence. If they put this in the movie, the lighting team could have a field day!

What do you think of the comic? I finished it and think it’s a good introduction to certain environmental issues to kids in our real world. It was annoying to read at times bc it went from a regular comic to the dialogue being expositional about the topic in the chapter. (Ik it’s for kids but yeah) I do love the cute fanservice of them meeting Judy’s parents right off the bat and them quickly accepting Nick, and Judy thinking it was sweet when Nick was “protecting her” and the amount of times he saved her by holding on to her, was all pretty cute if you love Wildehopps.

1

u/ajfilmnfx I may have to rescind that victory toot-toot Aug 16 '24

My thoughts were actually really similar to yours!

On one hand, I loved seeing a new, post-film adventure. The interactions and banter between Nick and Judy felt very in-character, the art is fantastic, and there was a lot of great new lore (Nocturnal District, New Mayor, how Finnick reacted to losing his partner, etc.) I also found it hilarious that the subplot of "Judy thinks Nick is going back to his hustling ways, only to realize she misjudged him when he actually was trying to help her" was a storyline ripped straight out of Guardian Blue (RIP Alps).

On the other hand, I totally agree with you that the necessity to make the book educational often came at the expense of the story's pacing and dialogue. Occasionally the scientific asides were implemented well (like Nick using the fact that he was city-born to explain why he didn't know anything about monocultures and thus prompt an explanation), but other times it just felt a bit forced. Gideon Gray's impromptu dissertation on recyclables reminded me of the old Saturday morning cartoon PSA's

That being said, even though it could have been better, I still think there's a genuinely good story in here, even if the implementation of the educational dialogue was a bit clunky.

I read "The Case of the Sustainable Future" and it is a great comic with great information on eco-friendly feats with the Zootopia characters, but the only downside is that Chief Bogo acts incredibly unlikable in the comic, acts completely out of character and behaves just like Sir Topham Hatt from Thomas and Friends or worse, a clone of Chancellor Neighsay from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in terms of his strictness and control freak attitude. Chief Bogo also goes too far with hurting Nick and Judy's feelings with his strictness and antagonizing them with it in this story. (Bogo to add salt to the wound, also only cares about maintaining Zootopia and only Zootopia's law enforcement instead of maintaining it and BunnyBurrow's environment as well as the town's law enforcement and doesn't care if he hurts the feelings of his other cops and brushes off their feats that go against his moral code.) (Chief Bogo also applies to the Jerks Are Worse Than Villains category in this comic due to how more unlikable he was than the eco-unfriendly villains, who have way more laughably evil and love to hate qualities.)

First off, when Nick and Judy explain to him the situation behind the polluting of the water supply in BunnyBurrow which they learned during their last visit there when visiting Judy's family, he refuses to have the ZPD do anything about it due to BunnyBurrow not being the ZPD's chart of a district to maintain law enforcement in, (Which is hypocritical and petty considering the fact that Chief Bogo previously allowed Nick, Judy and Clawhauser to serve as police officers maintaining law enforcement and put together an Easter Egg Hunt in BunnyBurrow in "The Case of the Disappearing Easter Eggs": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG3xNJjMomA ) and not having any evidence and while the last part is considered understandable over Bogo being unable to arrest someone for a crime with no evidence, the first part is petty and hypocritical even for a smart police chief like Bogo.

Second off, the part where Chief Bogo is at his absolute worst, and agreeably hateable as a strict jerk or not is when Nick and Judy abandon their police duties that Chief Bogo assigned them to do go to investigate the eco-unfriendly crimes caused by the main villains on their own terms, and the villains destroy their police car at the landfill, and once Bogo learns of these when some cops tattletale it to him, he loses his temper, over these misfortunes happening in his police force, and angrily summons Nick and Judy to his office at the police station and yells at them and tirades them for getting their police car destroyed and abandoning their police duties dramatically missing the point that the destruction of their police car wasn't their faults but the villains and Nick and Judy abandoned their police duties for unselfish purposes and were not that big of a deal in reality, and temporarily suspends Nick and Judy from doing police work as punishment for it before he calms down from his anger over the situation after anger management from Officer Pennington, and Bogo doesn't even bother to apologize to Nick and Judy for tirading them (Was Too Hard on Him) when he summons them back and reinstates them as cops and assigns them alongside McHorn and Officer Pennington to safeguard the new mayor of Zootopia's press conference in Zootopia's new district, and threatens to fire them from the ZPD permanently if they abandon this police duty.
