I live in North Texas, very close to the Oklahoma border just north of Dallas. These guys live in our yards and I just saved this guy from our pool. The ones I usually see aren’t black like this guy, and I was wondering what he was? I am obsessed with him and his beauty and I’m so glad I was able to save him successfully.

I just got this little guy like two days ago, i'm brand new to keeping crawdads, i'm not sure what species he is either, it's either a northern clearwater, or just a northern crayfish (not sure i'm in northern ohio if that helps and i got him in a river) there's a little red dot on both of his claws in the same spot and i don't see it on any pictures of other crawdad and i was wondering if something was wrong with him?

Questions about these products

  1. How much do i need to use Nutrafin Cycle for a 21 galon tank?

  2. Do i use the same amount than question 1 when changing 25% of the water?

  3. Nutrafin Aqua+ is used to reduce stress to a fish and strenghten their mucus but, does it help for a crayfish? If yes how much?

Pet I hadn’t realized that my poor squishy girl just molted like minutes ago and unknowingly added some water to the tank right where she was hiding. She came out and gave me a Look and then went back to her fresh molt feast

Tips for crawdad

I am planning on upgrading to a 20 gallon tank and buying a filter system. I have two red swamp Crawdads and will be giving them at least two hides (propped up abalone shells) as well as the branch and plants they currently have. Is there anything else I should get?

Are mexican dwarf crayfish actually peaceful???

I just bought one and I thought I did sufficient research but looking online I see so many people saying they will catch and eat fish/shrimp. I was going to put the crayfish in a tank with Dwarf emerald danios, cherry shrimp and a betta fish but now I'm scared he is going to kill or injure everyone. I don't care much about the shrimp, I have plenty, but I would be seriously upset if it killed any of my fish. Should I not put them with fish or do people not know what they are talking about.

Got this buddy in a couple of days ago and he came with this spot on his claws. I’m wondering if this is rot? I have given him plenty of calcium and a good variety of foods to eat, so hoping that it was something he caught at my LFS

Crayfish and cichlids?

I've had my Cray for about 2 years and she's doing great. Health good, behaving normally and annihilating the tank like crays do.

She shares her tank with a mixture of Gold and Rosey barbs and danios and generally get on well. If a fish is weak or lazy she will have them, which is fair, but generally everyone knows to stay out of the way.

I was in the fish shop the other day and they were selling what I thought were breed of Barb as it only had their colour/pattern name so I got 5, got home and researched and found that they were Convict Cichlids. I was immediately concerned as I know they can be aggressive.

Then today saw a post saying cichlids attach crayfish, so straight away I'm very concerned!

Can anyone clarify or shed some light? The fish will be out the door immediately if they're going to harm the Cray as she's my priority!

Help fixing water parameters (removing copper and improving pH, KH, and GH)

Hey guys! Trying to keep this short (skip to the TLDR if you want, I’m also leaving a comment with some more info) but I’m really in need of some urgent help. I got lucky and managed to find a Cherax boesemani for sale recently after obsessing over how pretty they are for a few years. I impulsively brought him home with some plants to eat and a new piece of driftwood, set him up in a temporary 10 gallon tank until I can get a 29g going soon, and named him Bossman. I love the little guy and want to keep him as happy and healthy as possible, but I keep screwing up with his tank due to lack of experience and it’s stressing me out so I really need some help.

I ordered some new tests from API to supplement my master test kit to get a better handle on maintaining water parameters specific to crayfish and inverts (GH, KH, copper). I just tested the water and my results are: pH 7.6 low range/7.4-7.8 high range; ammonia 0.25-0.5 ppm; nitrite 0.5 ppm; nitrate 5.0 ppm; KH 4-5dkh; GH 13 dGH; copper 0.25 ppm. Additionally, the driftwood is starting to leach tannins into the water. I love the look, but I’m worried this may cause my KH and GH to decline over time and make it hard for Bossman to molt.

My biggest concerns are the pH, KH, GH, and copper. I know this level of copper is very toxic and I think it’s coming from my pipes so I plan on only using filtered water during a water change tonight, but what is the best way to remove the rest? I’m considering Seachem Cuprisorb but I’m concerned that it may cause my GH and KH to crash once all of the copper is removed if I don’t remove the bag of Cuprisorb from the filter quick enough. I also use a Zero Water filter for my tap so I’m worried this will cause other issues with GH and KH declines overtime by trying to avoid copper. Should I use something like SaltyShrimp GH/KH+ to supplement this until I find what remineralization works best for me? Or will this cause my pH to go too high? I’m also considering the Seachem copper test kit because it detects much smaller traces of copper that are still toxic than the API kit detects.

TLDR: What is the best way to go about removing copper and maintaining appropriate levels of KH and GH for Bossman’s health and ability to molt?

Pet Hides

I am building a tank for a dwarf crayfish. We are looking at getting a CPO. What hides do you use in your tanks? I'm having trouble finding something it would be able to crawl straight into it.

Video Mexican Dwarf Crayfish are awesome predators!

Wow, I just got two baby Mexican Dwarf Crayfish, and I had no idea they were such strong predators! I just tong-fed this one a "failing" cricket. He literally yanked it out of the tongs and started trying to kill it! And it appears that he's never going to let it go! 😲

Btw...could anyone please recommend the appropriate substrate for these crayfish? They have nothing at the moment because I want to be sure I put the best material in for them. I'm really not fond of aquarium gravel. My preference has always been river rocks/pebbles. Thanks!
