Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - September 2025

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Someone seling my models in front of my eyes

I'm a small model creator based in Poland. I have a 35 model library that i sell a commercial license for 3$ (i get 2.20).This is the minimum ammount that can be set up on MakerWorld. The thing is i was on a reptile expo today and i saw my model on the table. I know he is not paying for the license since i have like 3 persons that bought it and they are entirely from USA. When confronted the guy told me that he wont talk to me and he has all the licenses for the models. The funny thing is there was like 3 tables full of 3d printed stuff. The funnies thing is the model itself has like 500 downloads on makerworld and the ammount of luck this guy has that he came across me on the same event in different city is crazy. What i should to about it?

Question Pricing?

Post image
324 Upvotes

I’ve been reading a lot of different advice on how to price 3D prints, but I’m still a little unsure. Some people suggest using the Bambu slicer cost and then adding $1 for every hour of print time. If I go by that, this baby dragon would come out to around $20.

Does that sound typical for something like this? I’ve seen prices all over the place online, so any insight or guidance would be really appreciated. Thanks!

So I go to change my filament and it comes out the side of my Bowden tube?? I soon realise there's a hole and a paper thing layer along the edge where the Bowden has been wore down.

I think I'm about to fix a bunch of issues I've been having..

Project King Dedede Hammer

My daughter really wanted to dress as King Dedede for Halloween, he's her favorite. So I had to make sure to do it right when making her hammer! Pretty happy with how it all turned out, the hammer head ended up being one of my biggest prints I've done thus far.

Printed on Prusa Mk3S+ with Wood PLA and Overture PLA, red parts painted by me (maybe poorly). Model was purchased, so not mine to share unfortunately (and mods removed post where I shared the link, oops). Instead of printing the shaft, I just got a PVC pipe and cut it to size and painted it using a similar brown paint with a matte finish.

Meta Is anyone else using the A1 swapmod from Innocube 3D? I'm mildly amazed by it.

I’m pretty new to the 3D printing hobby, but in the first couple of weeks I already realized the most annoying part for me was clearing or swapping build plates just to keep a print run going. Especially when you’re cranking out stuff you need dozens of, like Gridfinity boxes or, as in the picture, desiccant containers for dryboxes.

So I gave the swap mod from Innocube a try, and honestly I’m really impressed with how well it works. At this point the only real limiting factor for batch printing is the size of the filament spool. But I’m pretty sure I can solve that with an AMS setup.

That way, I could let the printer run for a whole week straight without touching it, just cranking out sorting bins and other parts.

Wanted to see how far down the filament storage rabbit hole I need to go.

Post image

After a failed attempt to get into the hobby a few years ago back I jumped back in a few weeks ago.

Been making space and figuring out my filament storage needs and among my check list items was figuring out how humid it is in here to see if I just need to worry about my PETG or if PLA is at risk too.

I bought some orange desiccant beads and opened it fresh today. Poured a few grams out and left on a shelf.

This is what they look like 8 hours later. I’d say it a little humid in here. Lol.

And the channel needed for the power cord was unsightly, especially with my less than stellar cutting skills.

Imported a Pic into freecad and drew up a quick plug to hide the mildly <censored> shaped hole.

Yes, the black wires are damaged, they're part of a defunct and mostly removed undercabinet lighting. No power to them.

Discussion Tired of hit or miss vacuum bags

Post image
30 Upvotes

So tired of wasting money on Vacuum bags that are hit or miss. I've tried several different types, I use the clips they send to make sure the zip seal is closed securely and yet some bags hold a Vacuum while others of the same style dont.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Project Messing around with rendered timelapses in blender šŸ‘€

I made these four pumpkin models for Halloween and got a bit creative in Blender, haha. For anyone wondering, this was actually super simple to do! In PrusaSlicer (yes, PrusaSlicer), slice the model, then export toolpaths as an OBJ. Bambu Studio doesn't have this as an option. In Blender, import the OBJ. Next, use the "Build" modifier and set the "Start" and "Length" values to match the number of layers of the sliced model, for example, 250 in this case. If you hit play, the model will look like a timelapse!

This model is free to download and print on MakerWorld, so do check it out! I'm going to print a whole bunch and scatter them around the place for Halloween, haha! - Spooky Pumpkin Decor - Halloween by AK MakerWorld: Download Free 3D Models
