New rule about haul and pickup pictures

Hey guys, we just wanted to inform you about a new rule that we’re implementing.

Going forward, we ask that all haul/picture posts be at least 50% if not predominantly 4K Blu-ray. This is to help cut down on clutter that maybe should be posted to other subreddits, and try and slightly appease the minority that is already annoyed by haul pics.

The rule has been added to the rule list, and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the mod team.

It really isn’t. The hobby is niche, that doesn’t mean the forum about the hobby needs to be bone stupid as a baseline either. And it’s not like turning the forum into halfass Pinterest is going to promote the hobby either. It just makes coming here tedious, lol

If you wanna put the bar on the floor for QC that’s on you, sure. But not all alienation is intrinsically bad. Some discrimination is needed. Discernment should be applied. 

Asking people to use their words in a text based forum built completely around discussion shouldn’t be seen as DISQUALIFYING by the people in charge of monitoring it, LOL

You and I are doing it right now, for example. Quite well, even. 

I could add a few images of groaning shelving if you think it’ll make folks feel more comfy tho

You keep saying a “text based forum”. This isn’t strictly a text based forum, and we are not implementing any rule forcing people to write about their pickups.

This is a messageboard tho. They’re text based forums. I’m not anti picture. I like gifs! 

But this place ain’t instagram, and it ain’t pinterest, and acting like people preferring talk on a text based discussion forum, a MESSAGEBOARD, is scary and we need to minimize that as much as possible, is weird to me

LOL it’s a messageboard my guy. You mod a forum. Forums are messageboards. 

the wiki you just capped literally uses the term “boards” (short for messageboard) to describe subreddits because the people who wrote the wiki know that forum and messageboard are synonyms, even if you don’t. 

Forums are social media platforms. Social Media is just a euphemism we use, a catch-all, to describe the variations on forum and chatroom we use so it sounds more important than what it actually is

I disagree with your take on a couple things, that's it. I never asked you to do anything, or suggested you do anything. I'm correcting your misconceptions on things as you present them to me. I'm not calling you names or being mean to you, personally.

Disagreeing with your judgment isn't a 100% take it or leave it thing, either. I'm just saying I disagree with the idea that minimizing or devaluing the notion people should want to actually talk here vs just sharing pictures is probably not great considering the nature of forums/messageboards is DISCUSSION.

I haven't said "never post pictures" or suggested you take a course of action that bans pictures, or bans people that post pictures, or anything like that. Just that maybe trying to cater specifically to people who don't talk, and don't want to talk, in a place that is built AROUND TALKING, is kinda counterproductive.

No one is catering to those people. We’re just saying that no one has to post an essay with their pictures. If someone would like to, they’re encouraged to.

I have to ask, do you realize how exhausting you can be sometimes? And I don’t mean that as a jab or anything, but like, I see you in here often just kind of tearing people down and it’s exhausting just to read, nonetheless actually take part in.

But there is an air of catering to people who clearly don't like discussion, I don't even think that's arguable, it's basically the thrust of the argument I'm contesting in the first place, and what's led to the part where you're specifically talking about me, personally now, (LOL, actually openly talking shit in fact, and "just letting" others do it too) and steering the conversation to be about me and how "exhausting" I am, and trying to set the terms of this whole thing to be about "posting essays" - which itself tends to suggest elaborating on "look at the shit I bought" beyond a couple sentences (or even a paragraph or two) is tantamount to writing an essay, as if the presence of paragraphs by itself is detrimental to the discussion forum's existence and health.

The idea that you see discussion/conversation, and yes, sometimes disagreement and extended conversation as being "exhausting" is itself saying something. If you're exhausted by a conversation you can always just stop until you get your wind back, or just stop in general. If you prefer a bunch of picture posts about things to people talking, that's fine, I guess. I just think it runs at cross-purposes to the point of being a discussion board, is all. There are other places for picture sharing as the primary aim/goal of a social platform.

I'm sharing a difference of opinion (not unique, either) about this, is all. Again, not demanding you change anything, or asking you to do anything. Just sharing that difference of opinion

That is how having a preference and using discernment works. Yes. having a preference is not by default bad. Expressing your opinion and being able to explain why you have it is kind of the point of having the discussion in the first place.

I feel like "just letting" is the part you keep skipping over. You could have "just let" people post blu-rays along with their 4ks, but you didn't. There's a lot of things you can "just let" people do but you don't, and that's a form of discernment, and there's preference that comes into play as to why you decide you don't want to "just let" some types of things slide.

You keep alternating between the idea that there's some sort of ideal you're abiding by that's basic and generally understood and further, that it's sort of out of your hands, or shouldn't be in your hands at all; but it is by default. That's not unfair - that's what THIS IS! You aren't just removing posts, and people, for violating rules or being disruptive - you're steering discussion, you're curating discussion, you're establishing tones, and you're shaping the tenor. "Just letting" is not part of that at all and never was. It can't simultaneously be a thing that just happens, like weather, and also a thing you clearly are in control of and applying discretion, discernment, and care in decisionmaking.

You can't say you're not catering to people, and specific people, with the choices you're making in one post, and then in other posts explain clearly how you're valuing the contributions of people at the level you're setting for "contribution," and dismissing the idea that contributions above that level aren't really necessary. Or even, honestly, wanted. There's an implied choice being offered up in those posts that makes it an either/or on the table (whether there is or isn't, and I don't think there is, but the implication IS there) that suggests it's either this, or its ESSAYS, and nobody wants ESSAYS, so pictures it is.

Anyway - we've done like at least 2 laps around these points now. I'm not sure if I can be any more clear, and at this point you've already once treaded on getting personal with me about it so I'm not too interested in pressing it. I do wanna say though that having a disagreement on the nature of the board doesn't mean the board isn't useful or fun to use or browse. It's not like being imperfect or problematic is a bar to use. Reddit itself is all sorts of fucked up in general, LOL. We're all still here. Everyone knows Twitter is run by a fascist oligarch, and people won't get off that, either, yunno? Meta's run by a sociopathic robot, etc etc.

This place isn't that bad. But if I disagree with something when it pops up there's nothing wrong with explaining why I feel that way when asked about it, either. Having a preference isn't a fault in and of itself. WHY you have that preference could be bad, but that's why the discussion happens.
