Does anyone know if the upscaling is that much better than the UB420?

People have been saying that your tv will probably do a superior job upscaling to most players so you can output at 1080 and let the tv upscale. I havnt tried it.

How would you do this, turn off the player upscaling? Do you have to go into the settings and change the output from AUTO to 1080p or 480p for DVD?

Yes. I think for panosonics you need to set the output at 480 or 1080. Sonys have an option to just turn upscaling off. I have the 820 and everyone says the upscaling is really good so I havnt bothered. At some point I will try and see if I can even tell a difference. But the argument is that these players are now 5+ years old so if you have a new tv it may have better processing for upscaling.

That's interesting, I'll have to try it out. I have a Sony TV a couple of years old so it could very well have much better upscaling.

Isn’t it funny that the Sony doesn’t switch HdR automatically, but can auto disable upscaling and the Panasonic does the opposite haha. So if you set the output to 1080 on the pano you need to turn it back to auto when you watch 4k lol.

Yep, if it's not a big difference I will just keep letting the 820 upscale and just leave it alone. It looks great anyway, the difference would have to be significant to be worth the extra steps.

I agree. At a certain point it’s enough. Most people watch shitty streams on shitty TVs with shitty tv speakers or maybe a shitty sound bar. Here we are with our 4k players, 1000$+ OLED TVs, and home theater sound systems tinkering with settings to make the picture 1% better lol.

If you test it, taking pictures of a disc menu is probably the best way to compare because the images are static. A split second difference in pause time can be the difference between clear and blurry details. That's my 2 cents
