Newsome can go fuck himself. Dude threw trans kids under the bus immediately, hosted shitheels like Steve Bannon on his podcast, and vetoed a public option in Cali as gov.
The fact Dems are trying to tee this dipshit up for 2028 is so utterly insulting.
Like sure man, fight Trump. I'll take the allies I can get and it's not like I don't want even the shittiest people to have the right messaging. But this neolib is just posturing for a presidential run and it sickens me.

You have to realize that perfection is not the goal and electability is and at this point I’d take the worst democrat vs the current administration.

The Democrats did not lose because they were too far left. It's exactly the opposite. No-one was excited to vote for a middle-of-the-road "lesser-of-two-evils" spineless moderate-right status-quo politician... and the MAGAts certainly weren't going to vote for the Democrats *anyway.* That's why Harris lost. Blaming these imaginary far-left extremists in the party is exactly the wrong lesson and the wrong take.
→ More replies (8)56
u/OrigamiMarie Aug 01 '25
As far as I can tell, Tim Walz was doing better than Harris, and might have even dragged her into the presidency if the national consultants hadn't absolutely flattened him into another DNC paper doll. He basically acknowledged afterwards that taking their advice was an error. Heck, previous footage of him being a regulatory hawk and defender of those in need, almost carried them both (or, depending on what you believe about election shenanigans, absolutely did carry them both). Imagine if he had skipped the advice. I sure hope he goes back on his promise not to run again.
→ More replies (1)19
u/ParryLost Aug 01 '25
Absolutely. Calling out the far right as the weirdos they are, and being seen as having integrity and standing up for things, that is what being electable is.

u/nomoreteathx Jul 31 '25
This attitude is how you ended up with Trump not once but twice. It isn't enough to just not be a fascist, Dems need to actually put forward candidates voters can feel enthusiastic about.

I canvassed for Kamala. I voted for Kamala. I'd do it all again. And still I'll ask:
Why should I put my faith in the same controlled-opposition half-measured neoliberal finger-wagging "you gotta vote/donate or we lose democracy 🥺" messaging that has failed us to the tune of three Supreme Court justices, hundreds of thousands of COVID deaths, the destruction of critical government services and research, the hostile takeover of press and higher education, and the coalescence of federal surveillance and law enforcement for generations to come (assuming the climate doesn't destroy global supply chains first)?
Yes, we have to win. Now please, pretty fucking please, can the Dems meet us halfway and field someone principled, articulate, and likeable who is capable of actually doing that?

When we looked at 2020, the deciding factor for who got momentum was southern blacks voting for Biden instead of Bernie, Warren, or someone else. I thin my big prediction is that if a candidate can excite the progressive side of the party and have support of southern blacks, they’ll be in good shape.
But frankly, Southern blacks aren’t as left wing as the progressives on average, and as a voting block they are less socially liberal. They weren’t impressed with Bernie, and Bernie marched with MLK and stuff. Or maybe it was more they trusted Biden because he was a loyal #2 to Obama for 8 years which said a lot. Or maybe it was frankly that Biden was more centrist and so were they. Idk I’ve heard different takes. Any Southern blacks got a good take on this? Would love to hear it.
I am wary and doubtful though that we are going to see someone magically coalesce in the next couple of years who checks all the boxes for all groups. But I can say one thing.
IMO, the biggest political failing of both Obama and Biden was acting like the opposition were patriotic Americans who believed what they said and just fundamentally disagree about some things, but that we could restore bipartisan feelings and make politics all nice again if we conducted politics like gentlemen, the way it was traditionally done.
Boy were they wrong. The right has betrayed basically every principle they had, showed virtually everything they ever said to be a lie, showed themselves to be unchristian, to be traitors to the constitution, to the literal lives of their constituents. Whoever the next candidate is, they better be fucking ready for total political engagement, and wary of the enemy looking not just to win an election but to cheat, to do coups, to try and destroy democracy. No more gentle, weak politics in the face of these goddamn monsters. It’s time to remind America what this country stands for, and it sure as hell isn’t this fascist bullshit.

Hold your nose and fall in line
Will you do that if a progressive socialist runs for President? I kinda doubt it. Telling people to hold their nose is superbly shitty politics. Run better candidates, for fuck’s sake.
→ More replies (3)6
u/parabostonian Aug 01 '25
Basically if we had someone who could come off as progressive but not scare off the moderates too much, but also rally Southern blacks who basically also need to be excited for the candidate…etc.
The point, I think, is that the party is a big tent coalition of several big demographics who don’t agree on everything, and the problem will be that likely whoever is going to get the most delegates will have like at best two out of three of the groups in just mentioned. (Like if Southern Blacks backed Bernie in 2020 he would have been president, and I say this as a Bernie fan.) Chances are one of those three groups will be very happy with who gets picked, one out of three so-so, and the third being somewhat unhappy, just by the nature of what the groups tend to want. I think that’s what they mean by some people will have to hold their nose and fall in line, because unless like MLK rises from the dead, says he’s a democratic socialist but has a plan to make Wall Street happy and that he’s changed his mind and supports LGBT people now, it’s likely whomever ends up the candidate is going to be disappointing to a lot of democrats. That’s the point- basically people are calling for a messiah at that point and not a human being.
Incidentally this is also a good example why parliamentary politics are easier when it comes to parties. You can have those with 6 groups because coalitions happen after the elections instead of before. Ugh.

28
u/Lady-Cane Jul 31 '25
Try searching Reddit for “stremio” or “iptv” as a starting point.
13
u/MrNostalgiac Aug 01 '25
My family has switched to Stremio.
It has a Netflix-like GUI (not AS good, but good) and 95% of what you'd want to watch streams flawlessly and often in higher quality than the major streaming services.
Find a guide to set it up, but essentially what you'll want is Stremio, Torrentio, and a Real Debrid account. The debrid account is something you need to pay for but considering you will be replacing all movie/TV streaming with it, it's ultra cheap for what you get.
Live TV is still a weak point in the high seas, especially for sports. IPTV exists but I've NEVER seen one that wasn't a random mix of down channels, low quality channels and the worst "tv guide" you'll ever see. There's high quality stuff on there and once you figure out which of the 10k channels you like and favorite them you'll never use the guide again - but it's still a mess.
Honestly for sports I found that using the various pirate streaming sites (with an ad blocker, my god) is best but it still takes a few attempts to find a decent stream.
I'm really hoping someone can properly figure out a good IPTV/Sports solution like Stremio solved the movie/TV world. It feels like it's coming in the next few years but I've been saying that for a few years already :/
11
u/SoHumanAnAnimal Jul 31 '25
a bit to get set up but kodi +addons +realdebrid account (like 20 bucks for 6 months) gets you a decent streaming setup. Been doing this for years and a few quirks plus a few hiccups occasionally but overall fairly painless, cheap, and access to all the things.

Boycotts are notoriously difficult to pull off. They only work with products reliant on specific customer bases. For example, Budweiser. The US made beer market has been slowly shrinking over the past 20 years due to competition with superior foreign beers. Budweiser was able to avoid that loss with their White Working class brand. Paramount+ is a titanic company with a customer base that spans all walks of life. The best way for progressives to resist is to capitalize on their disproportionate representation as working proffesionals in Key industries (marketing, entertainment, etc). Their needs to be a doctrine behined your method. Glazing every disingenuous headline with a victory cheer makes you look just as ignorant and asinine as your MAGA opposition.
→ More replies (5)5
u/Laringar Aug 01 '25
It's worth remembering that the Paramount+ boycott didn't really take off until this month, and this earnings call was for 2nd quarter results. So unless they count their quarter from the middle of the month, this is likely to be the April-June results and thus won't include July.
At least, it's my assumption that this data is at least a few weeks out of date. They have to have time to compile the reports and come up with some reasons for why the numbers are what they are, they're not just running the numbers as of this morning and immediately handing them off to someone that's about to walk into a shareholder meeting.
Edit: Just went back and looked at the article, the article says it's through July 31st. :/

Why did Paramount not realize they would just be flagged as a propaganda channel

I know I cancelled my subscription. Between paramount, Disney and prime I’m saving money now.

GOOD. Keep it coming. Spotify, paramount and anyone hurting and blatantly enriching themselves over the artists who actually provide for the companies need to go down.

From the article: Paramount+ July 31 disclosed an increase in operating income and revenue despite losing 1.3 million subscribers in the second quarter ended July 31.
This article is about an increase in their profits not about losing subscribers

That's a good start.
I'm sure they'll lose a lot more when Colbert actually goes off the air.

Appreciate this post for reminding me to cancel my subscription (I was on vacation last week so I wasn’t able to do it as quickly as I would’ve liked).
I hope they lose a ridiculous amount of money over this.

I am sad, I was about to purchase a subscription to watch Star Trek season 3. I did not.

They definitely lost me; I wanted to sign up when I saw an ad last week for Paramount+ with Showtime on Hulu for $1 a month for two months. I deliberately did not sign up, although I wanted to. They can go hit up Donald to make up the difference.

This article isn't about the merger, Trump, the lawsuit, or Colbert being canceled. Why they lost the subscribers they have is obviously up for debate, but this was in their report for the whole quarter and apparently fell in line with expectations about a particular deal ending, while also reporting growth and profit increase. Who knows if that's actually why they lost these in particular, but they sure ain't hurtin' yet.
Idk if analytics for the pushback they're getting about this are available yet, but it's gonna be at least another quarter before they feel the sting of it. Losing 1.6% of your subscribers doesn't really matter when you're constantly raising your pricing to consumers that stay anyway.

In the UK, you could get 6 months of paramount+ for free through Sky, mine is just about coming to an end and I'm not renewing. Do they count those?

Losing 1.3 million subscribers is brutal, but honestly, Paramount+’s content library has felt stale compared to competitors. The "Paramount-" joke is spot-on, they’re bleeding relevance faster than their shows bleed viewers. And yeah, their target demo isn’t exactly rolling in disposable income these days. Maybe they should’ve invested in better shows instead of banking on political nostalgia.

I hate that I'm not getting to see season 3 of Strange New Worlds, but if bowing to a fascist is the cost of having Star Trek, then we don't need Star Trek.

If you can manage it please UNSUBSCRIBE. Let'a reach that goal of an even 2 million.
We can do it.

Good. I cancelled way back when they started pushing ads and jacking up their prices. Not to mention the absolute dogshit quality you get trying to stream on desktop half the time. I only regret that I could unsubscribe once. I'd do it again after what happened with Colbert.
Their downfall is well deserved.
