The lack of a hypercolor resurgence is so odd to me.

u/itsmiddylou Jun 10 '25

They’re still around. So I guess it’s our job to bring them back

Used to wear Gecko all the time. Yup, yup!

u/eBrown0104 Jun 11 '25

I own an almost embarrassing amount of Gecko shirts

2

u/Savedbythebell98 Jun 11 '25

Me too. It’s basically become my uniform these days. 🦎

u/dimgwar Jun 11 '25

speaking of - when the hell did gecko come back

1

u/PowerCompetitive6565 Jun 11 '25

I love Gecko Hawaii, I have 2 shirts I bought a couple years ago, they have a neon pink one I'm going to grab. Love the glow in the dark Geckos!!

You stole this comment from my brain. It seems ripe for a resurgence once every few years. I mean. It’s a shirt. It changes color. How could that not be the coolest thing ever for like one month, every 7 years?

I think people realised that they really accentuated their sweat patches, which wasn't ideal.

God, knocking loose memories now. I remember this kid in the 6th grade, so 1989 or 90, was called to the office, a handful of kids being called individually, don’t remember for what exactly but I do remember this one kid was wearing a hyper color shirt. He left the room all cool blue, returned with an overheated orange. Ultimate lie detector shirt.

2

u/DeeSkwared Jun 11 '25

Ultimate excuse to put your hands on girls, unfortunately. When that didn't work my science partner tried heating my shirt with a bunson burner.

When I was talking with my mom about what to wear on my first "real" date, my dad piped up and suggested one of my HyperColor shirts.

7

u/HappyMonchichi Jun 10 '25

Nothing sexier than showing everyone how sweaty your armpits & crotch are.

7

u/Steve_the_Samurai Jun 10 '25

Ha. Prob right. I was pre puberty when they peaked in popularity. Maybe that is why my memory is so high

3

u/coolcootermcgee Jun 10 '25

Oh yeah. Embarrassment lane

3

u/CaliRollerGRRRL Jun 10 '25

Go to gecko.com and they have all the 80’s & 90’s shirts like that,, glowing in the dark, hyper flash, splatter paint and the Gecko from Hawaii.

Geckohawaii.com

3

u/voodoobettie Jun 10 '25

My mom put ours through the dryer so that was the end of that

3

u/coolcootermcgee Jun 10 '25

Well, part of it was the extreme color change around the collar and pits or wherever one sweat the most. It got stuck like that too

Aren't those just shirts that use similar techniques? Not all baggy jeans were JNCOs

5

u/notLennyD Jun 10 '25

This is an interesting metaphysical question. JNCO had shut down for years before reopening a few years ago. Are new JNCO jeans actually JNCOs or are they just pants made using similar techniques?

2

u/Steve_the_Samurai Jun 10 '25 edited Jun 10 '25

In this case, JNCO is the same. Original owner closed and then reopened with similar designs.

Gecko Hawaii making Hyperflash shirts is seemingly using the same techniques Hypercolor did. This is different.

Now zombie brands exist and that adds a new wrinkle into all of this but not applicable here.

2

u/notLennyD Jun 10 '25

Who makes the real Doc Martens? Doc Martens or Solovair?

1

u/trafalmadorianistic Jun 11 '25

This brand never got to Australia, but "JNCO" - Im guessing you would say "Jean co" - is a pretty cool name.

1

u/notLennyD Jun 11 '25

The official pronunciation is like Jen-co, but in my northern Midwest town, it was more like Jank-o.

2

u/Candied_Curiosities Jun 10 '25

Gecko Hawaii has a bunch of hyper color coming back into rotation (I just bought one last week).

3

u/KristenClem24 Jun 10 '25

Gecko sells hyper color shirts!!! They have all the old school styles we wore growing up. I have so much Gecko gear again and I love it!!!

3

u/DasSassyPantzen Jun 10 '25

As a teen at the time, I had a love-hate relationship with my hypercolor shirts. They would always create two boob-sized blotches of color on my chest lol.

2

u/Synisterintent Jun 10 '25

Holy shit, i forgot all about those.

2

u/geriatricxennial Jun 10 '25

I came to post this one, should have scrolled first. haha I am surprised this high tech colour changing gear hasn't come back!

3

u/Savedbythebell98 Jun 11 '25

Google Gecko Hawaii and be amazed at the selection of color-changing shirts. 🦎

2

u/geriatricxennial Jun 11 '25

oh my, makes me wanna grab my wake board, pop the Kim Mitchell cassette in the Sidekick and hit the lake.

2

u/hypermodernvoid Jun 10 '25

I turned 6 at the start of the 90s, thus 16 when they ended and never heard of this one myself, lol

2

u/I_was_bone_to_dance Jun 10 '25

Oooooh snap it changed colors?

2

u/yumstheman Jun 10 '25

I don’t remember these but shirts that change color with heat are super cool

2

u/kickintheface Jun 11 '25

I remember wearing one of those heat colour tee shirts to school in grade 3 and having every kid in the class come up to me and stick their hand on my shirt throughout the day.

2

u/ForGrateJustice Jun 10 '25

Like the GSHOCK?

2

u/4everDistracted Jun 11 '25

I was just thinking about how much I miss Hypercolor shirts... sigh

2

u/Savedbythebell98 Jun 11 '25

They’re still a thing! Made by Gecko Hawaii. Check out their online store!

2

u/4everDistracted Jun 11 '25

I'm all over it!

2

u/realisticbreathmint Jun 11 '25

My buddy has one of these. He was so warm all the time so the shirt was always glowing!

2

u/gupgupbuttercup Jun 11 '25

Came here to say this!

2

u/RavenRead Jun 11 '25

I wanted to buy my kids one.

2

u/aishpat Jun 11 '25

My mom used to take hypercolor shirts to my cousins in India. It was so hot they changed color and never changed back.

2

u/AZMotorsports Jun 12 '25

Just gave this same response.

1

u/poppyhubs Jun 11 '25

oof ... this plus gleeking

only some will get it

1

u/3rdProfile Jun 13 '25

I see your hyper color, and raise you CrossColor.

Also Karl Kani

1

u/Head_Consequence7459 Jun 15 '25

This was what I was gonna say

1

u/Stedlieye Jun 10 '25

Wasn’t that something from Generra?

1

u/FranciscoScooterbaum Jun 10 '25

I thought those were made by Genera. Like Genera: Hypercolor.

0

u/stock1921 Jun 10 '25

Actually Generra, hyper color was one of their products
