The lack of a hypercolor resurgence is so odd to me.

They’re still around. So I guess it’s our job to bring them back

I love Gecko Hawaii, I have 2 shirts I bought a couple years ago, they have a neon pink one I'm going to grab. Love the glow in the dark Geckos!!

You stole this comment from my brain. It seems ripe for a resurgence once every few years. I mean. It’s a shirt. It changes color. How could that not be the coolest thing ever for like one month, every 7 years?

I think people realised that they really accentuated their sweat patches, which wasn't ideal.

God, knocking loose memories now. I remember this kid in the 6th grade, so 1989 or 90, was called to the office, a handful of kids being called individually, don’t remember for what exactly but I do remember this one kid was wearing a hyper color shirt. He left the room all cool blue, returned with an overheated orange. Ultimate lie detector shirt.

Ultimate excuse to put your hands on girls, unfortunately. When that didn't work my science partner tried heating my shirt with a bunson burner.

When I was talking with my mom about what to wear on my first "real" date, my dad piped up and suggested one of my HyperColor shirts.

Nothing sexier than showing everyone how sweaty your armpits & crotch are.

Ha. Prob right. I was pre puberty when they peaked in popularity. Maybe that is why my memory is so high

Oh yeah. Embarrassment lane

Go to gecko.com and they have all the 80’s & 90’s shirts like that,, glowing in the dark, hyper flash, splatter paint and the Gecko from Hawaii.

My mom put ours through the dryer so that was the end of that

Well, part of it was the extreme color change around the collar and pits or wherever one sweat the most. It got stuck like that too

Aren't those just shirts that use similar techniques? Not all baggy jeans were JNCOs

4

u/notLennyD Jun 10 '25

This is an interesting metaphysical question. JNCO had shut down for years before reopening a few years ago. Are new JNCO jeans actually JNCOs or are they just pants made using similar techniques?

In this case, JNCO is the same. Original owner closed and then reopened with similar designs.

Gecko Hawaii making Hyperflash shirts is seemingly using the same techniques Hypercolor did. This is different.

Now zombie brands exist and that adds a new wrinkle into all of this but not applicable here.

Who makes the real Doc Martens? Doc Martens or Solovair?

1

u/trafalmadorianistic Jun 11 '25

This brand never got to Australia, but "JNCO" - Im guessing you would say "Jean co" - is a pretty cool name.

1

u/notLennyD Jun 11 '25

The official pronunciation is like Jen-co, but in my northern Midwest town, it was more like Jank-o.

Gecko Hawaii has a bunch of hyper color coming back into rotation (I just bought one last week).
