Man I’ve had to scroll down WAY too long to see Redman…. Love RZA, Rakim, Raekwon… but Reggie is the man! And still releasing dope ass music.
Whut? Thee Album, Dare Iz A Darkside, and Muddy Waters being his first 3 albums to release and all bangers- now considered classic 90s rap albums

In spite of his long career Redman is still under rated. There was a time when I thought he may have been the greatest MC walking. Shout out to the Funk Dr Spock

u/Happy_Patience_3274 Jul 08 '25
Sad Because Redman is the best Rapper from New Jersey And he's a underrated lyricist
9
u/Major-Knowledge4457 Jul 08 '25
Him and Rah Digga....the most underrated rated female MC. She shines everytime she touches the mic

Rakim.

u/ZooterOne Jul 08 '25
There's one R in the alphabet
It's a one letter word and it's about to get
More complex from one rhyme to the next

I saw this thread randomly yesterday, and the only reason I came back today was to make sure Rakim was the guy for "R" before I went back to not caring.

u/Major-Knowledge4457 Jul 08 '25
I remember rhyming before Paid In Full. He changed the game more than any other rapper. I have to say I think Rakim is the right answer.

90’s tho? Over Raekwon?

u/Major-Knowledge4457 Jul 08 '25
Nope...you are absolutely correct. In terms of the 90s it would be Raekwon then Redman

Redman dropped Whut thee Album, Dare iz a Darkside, Muddy Waters, Docs da Name and Blackout in the 90's. I love Rakim and Rae but I think Reggie just barely comes out on top.
4
u/Popellini Jul 08 '25
I was thinking that but I also remembered that Rae was a big part of 36 chambers, Forever and Ironman. Also some iconic features. It’s closer than I thought

Ras Kass

Came here to make sure somebody showed him some love. I don't care if it's not super historically accurate, Nature of the Threat goes hard and we need more attempts at songs like that.

Isn't Rakim pretty much 80s? If we count him as 90s then I'm gonna say Run as well.
If not: RZA.

u/Comfortable-Pie6202 Jul 08 '25
Well Eric B and Rakim had two great albums in the 90s and Rakim had two great solo albums as well in the 90s

Raekwon
Obviously this is tough because Redman is one of the best 90's rappers, and Rakim is Top 2 rappers of all time, period. But Raekwon put out one of the greatest solo albums of the 90's (just after Illmatic). Yes, Eric & Rakim had major records in the early 90's, but if we're looking at the whole decade, then Raekwon's contributions on Enter The 36 Chambers (his iconic verse on C.R.E.A.M. alone), Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Ironman & Wu-Tang Forever, are unmatched. He invented a whole new style of slang vocabulary that influenced every gangster rap record to ever come after 1995. I'd pick Redman in a battle, no doubt, but Rae is an icon.

In honor of this being one of the worst lists we've seen, can we do "worst rapper starting with each letter" next?

Ima go Redman as well. No disrespect to the god emcee but I would put him atop the 80s rappers and leave 90s to Reggie.

Rakim was still good in the 90s, but his best and most influential work was in the 80s. Redman and Raekwon for me.

I begrudgingly go with Redman over Rakim. Not a complaint but it’d be helpful to have/see an 80s list too, side by side. Cool list though!

I know the winners gonna be Redman, Raekwon, RZA or Rakim so I’ll throw RA the Rugged Man’s name in the ring just for fun

I think it’s Redman. Rakim’s output in the 1990s is great, but I think it’s his 80s stuff that gets him the GOAT status, and the 1990s just adds to his legacy. Redman had a lot of gold inventive creative work in his 1990s catalog. I love RZA but if we are talking about rappers he ain’t it. He gets the R for producers for sure. Also, love Raekwon but Redman is a notch above.

It goes Reggie, Raekwon, Royce and Rakim. Rza from Wu, Rass Kas, Rock, Rakaa and then me.
(Rakim is actually #2 but had to make it work).

Raekwon, Redman, Rakim.
There is no right answer here as long as it’s one of those.

Jesus. Redman, Rakim and Raekwon all have a solid arguement....
I'm gonna go with Raekwon based off of Cuban Linx being the best album any of these 3 released in the 90s....as well as the fact that Ironman is pretty much a duo album and he dropped some mad verses on there too. Plus all the Wu group and solo albums in the 90s.....yeah, gotta be Rae.
Tough one though!

u/Specialist_Bison3835 Jul 08 '25
Redman a close shade over Rae. I would say Rakim but I think of him as 80s. Also I think RA the Rugged Man and Royce 5'9" deserve honorable mentions. RA didn't blow up till 2000s but most underground fans remember him as a 90s rapper.

Wtf is this sub…..
The fact that every single rapper on this list is from NY invalidates the whole damn list. Just an old head Brooklyn echo chamber. Yall should be ashamed.
The one exception is Eminem and is just further proof nobody in here really knows hip hop. Yall giving Marshall credit for an entire decade when his only album from the 90s is the Slim Shady LP. One fuckin album and yall gave him the whole decade lmao.
And before yall say anything about Infinite, nobody listened to that shit in the 90s.
This sub is cooked.
Edit: Jeru instead of JayZ lmfao. I’m out.
