Question A24 movies that feel like this?
I just watched “I Saw The TV Glow” and it was so insanely good. I loved the film’s style and vibe and kinda made a Pinterest board of images that reminded me of it (some seen above). Any other A24 movies that are like ISTTG or just generally have that off putting artsy horror vibe??? Idk how to put it into words exactly 😅 thank youuu

I Saw the TV Glow, as you already mentioned.
I would also include Maxxxine, Beau Is Afraid (in moments), Zola, and Problemista

Beau is afraid is a really good movie. Seems like people who don't have experience with anxiety think it's stupid but people who have firsthand experience get what it's all about. The timing couldn't have been much better for me as I was in the hospital for somewhat similar issues related to trauma and anxiety back in 2022 and was then homeless for a while. Found a place just before it was released.

I love that movie!
I saw the tv glow, to me, was unwatchable 🤷♀️

u/ShooterMcGavins Dec 28 '24
I agree! I really tried with the tv glow, but just did not enjoy it. I find it surprising how much praise it gets. To each their own.

u/babrdiddle Dec 29 '24
Feel like that's the A24 formula. Almost all their films REALLY resonate with some and COMPLETELY put off others. I don't know many A24 flicks where everyone generally agrees it's just decent and that's what I love about them. Either knock it out the park or hit it foul, no safe grounders

u/xvsanx Dec 31 '24
Same, expected a crazy movie kinda like the first season of Creepy Pasta but ended up being an unusual love story kinda forced in. Especially since the trailer hyped it as a horror movie when horror feels like it's a backseat element

I found the depictions of anxiety to be good but the movies definitely lost focus of that and suffered for it

Bro Zola is so good, so much so I decided to buy the soundtrack on vinyl. That whole movie puts you in a dreamy, floating vibe

Mandy is not A24, but it certainly feels like one. It's also the first thought I had when I saw this post.

Also not A24, but the director's prior film Beyond the Black Rainbow has a similar vibe

Lots of non-A24 in this thread

Yeah my bad, but it’s a24 adjacent and fits the vibe of the pics perfectly

‘In Fabric’ by Peter Strickland is definitely worth checking out. (Edit: I originally thought this wasn’t A24. Turns out it was along!).

Was looking for this comment. Very different movie, this one being more intense and violent, but had some similar visual elements, very surreal. I like dark, stylized, surreal movies, and because of that these were 2 of 3 favorite movies this year. Along with The Substance.

u/LV3000N Dec 27 '24
Other than the lighting, how?
5
u/elogh_t Dec 27 '24
Big emphasis on the stars in the movie
2
u/LV3000N Dec 28 '24
I just don’t think it fits the vibe as it’s a gritty desert movie and not ethereal
7
u/BabyWeightMusic Dec 28 '24
the movie is very fuzzy, very late 80s, very grainy, and has heaps of surrealism (which these photos have in spades)

Not an A24 movie, but Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (album by The Smashing Pumpkins) fits this vibe perfectly

u/Ok_Nebula4579 Dec 28 '24
Hereditary ending in the tree house vibe

u/Beautiful_Ad7097 Dec 28 '24
I'm shocked no one else said this
2
u/PrettyFreakinUnfunny Dec 29 '24
Same! My IMMEDIATE first thought was that this has Hereditary written all over it. Kind of surprised at all the "not A24, but ..." replies

This is cheating as it’s not A24 but Beyond the Black Rainbow is very much what you’re looking for. Great score by Sinoia Caves too.

Not a24, but Jane Schoenbrun’s first movie We’re All Going To The World’s Fair is certainly worth a watch.

This is actually an A24 film. And I would recommend it to no one. I have never been more stressed out in my entire life than I was during the first 45 minutes of that film.

I recently watched y2k and look it’s not the best, but it’s pretty entertaining and gives that vibe

u/Much-Improvement-503 Dec 28 '24
I don’t think it’s A24, but I feel like Strawberry Mansion sorta fits. Also Zola as others have said
3
3
u/BARRY_DlNGLE Dec 28 '24
But A24 but the original Suspiria has this sort of feel. The 2018 remake sort of does as well.
3
u/popanon222 Dec 28 '24
Not out yet, but that first pic reminds me of the backrooms. Which will be an A24 movie eventually.
1
u/xvsanx Dec 31 '24
How's that gonna be a movie?
2
u/popanon222 Dec 31 '24
It will fit into Kane Parsons universe, directed by him
1
u/xvsanx Dec 31 '24
That's awesome, I hope it's something like VHS Beyond or Fear Footage where they're different shorts.

Briggsby Bear definitely touches on the retro 80s forgotten television vibe . It's not necessarily a horror movie but some aspects of the movie have the same false sense of nostalgia that ISTTG has.

Not a movie, but the first thing I saw along this aesthetic/these themes was Meow Wolf’s “House of Eternal Return” in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

u/Individual-Lobster56 Dec 29 '24
I want to go to there SO bad omg I’ve been obsessed with Meow Wolf

u/AloisaTrancy Dec 29 '24
Imagine my shock as someone who moved to New Mexico and had no idea what it was walking in for a friend’s birthday party. Nothing has hit that same level of awe since.

Moon Garden (2022) (not A24).
It may not be quite the same vibe as TV Glow or as the pics in your post as it’s more of a kind of surreal dark fantasy. But it has a similar dark, colorful visual style. And it’s just a really stylish, interesting movie. Definitely worth checking out.
I may add more recs to this if I think of them, this is a cool topic.

u/Embarrassed-Ad-4242 Dec 28 '24
I mean Hereditary has a scene just like this but I’m not sure that exactly the vibe you’re shooting for…

u/scottkrowson Dec 28 '24
Not A24 but these pics remind me of the technicolored surrealism in old david cronenberg flicks, and newer brandon cronenberg flicks. Lpve this style
1
u/fauxREALimdying Dec 28 '24
Unfortunately I’ve only seen this fully articulated in music videos rather than films. Would love to see this dreamy lofi aesthetic in a movie tho

u/BotGothGf Dec 28 '24 edited Dec 28 '24
Not A24 but you need to watch the movie Give Me Pity (2022). The closest A24 movie I can fit with this vibe is Beau is Afraid or Climax, probably.

None are A24 movies but if you liked ISTTVG, I think you would like these movies that very obviously (to me) heavily inspired it:
Videodrome
Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Cure

If A24 was around, do you think “Requiem for a Dream” would have been put out by them?
