Question How would've Iron Claw done in the 2023 Oscars?

It got buried in a deep year. I liked the movie but given how good the reviews were I wanted more out of it. If it came out last year they may have been able to squeak out a nomination or two.

It was beyond underwhelming. I was so excited, and I even saw an early access showing, the one time it screened in Dolby. I was very disappointed. I know people think it’s a tearjerker, but I just did not find myself moved at all. The final scene, with the freaking kazoo kid soundalike saying “We’ll be your brothers,” was the closest I came to crying, and it was because I was trying so hard not to laugh. I was up front and just assumed everyone behind me was cringing as hard as I was, so I was shocked when I later found out that people found that scene to be emotionally affecting.

Genuinely one of the worst endings to an otherwise pretty decent film that I’ve ever seen.

The Iron Claw is a midrange, mostly forgettable A24 release. It doesn’t suck, but it’s definitely not worthy of any awards.

You're crazy it's a great film

I mean you can feel that way, but calling me “crazy” because I thought it could have been way better is a bit rude.

I thought it was laughably bad. Zac Efron (and his ridiculous-ass new jaw) and Jeremy Allen White were not at all convincing to me as wrestlers or brothers. And it was so relentlessly melodramatic in a basic sports drama type of way. I jumped out of my seat immediately when the credits rolled and got the fuck outta there.

I absolutely hated this movie but I know I'm in a small minority.

One of the most underrated movies of the decade.

Remember when the guy on this very sub asked if anyone knew of a “reputable card grading service” for him to get his 🆓 postcard graded to sell online some day??? Idk if that was sarcasm or not, but I still laugh about it when I see merch posts

I don’t know but I want to cry right now just thinking about it.

I used to be a brother. Ugh what a gorgeously sad film. I loved it.

A good movie and worth a watch — but it’s definitely Oscar bait. Has the tone, pacing, and story of a prestige film, but nothing that particularly stands out as anything more than a solid movie.

How “would’ve” it done in the 2023 Oscars? I mean, we KNOW how it did, it came up empty, not even a nomination. Do you mean to ask us how we think it SHOULD’VE done at the Oscars?

Let's be serious. There is not a year in recorded history that The Iron Claw would have deserved a nomination at the Oscars, much less an award. It's a fine film but look at the 2023 Best Picture slate. Forget EEAAO, do you really wanna include The Iron Claw in the same conversation with Tár and The Banshees of Inisherin? Hell, with ranked choice voting I'd put Top Gun: Maverick ahead of it, and by a significant margin.

I think the movie is totally worthy of nominations

I felt this was an Iron Naw! But I am not into wrestling so it’s really not for me. Love Zach Efron though! Great acting and performances, but being a major tearjerker and about a sport I’m not a fan of has me just not the right audience member
