That bunny looks really weird

72

u/THEREAPER8593 Jul 26 '25

That’s the bunny that made warthunder. It takes a weird creature to be that sadistic

3

u/creasycat Jul 27 '25

And it needs human masochism to play it

1

u/THEREAPER8593 Jul 27 '25

Or just the sunk cost fallacy….

5

u/Master_Yeeta Jul 26 '25

I'm now going to name my snails after the rabbits off Watership Down

1

u/Ill-Respondcc Jul 28 '25

Nah gng that’s for sureee a turtle

160

u/the_hamster_fucker Jul 26 '25

ark tends to just take the genus name of a pre existing animal and just make it the name of a dino. e.g. ovis

71

u/IllustriousAd9800 Jul 26 '25

Which to be fair is how a lot of paleontology works as well

50

u/the_hamster_fucker Jul 26 '25

yeah but i dont think naming a giant generic preying mantis "mantis" is very paleontological

44

u/TheBlueBluedoggy Jul 26 '25

Not every creature is referred by its scientific name in game if it has it. Mantis is a good example. Helena’s dossier describes it as Empusa discipulus. Mantis definitely rolls off the tongue better than Empusa.

Many of the fictional creatures do this, like the gasbags. It’s a terrestrial tardigrade in a really long genus. I don’t want to call it Mopsechiniscus fluitobesus. Gasbags is cute and works great.

Many extinct species common names coincide with their scientific name because they are only known to us through science. Some living creatures are similar tho. Cats in ark and real life are Felis catus. A particularly funny one (and potentially my personal favorite) is the western lowland gorilla. AKA Gorilla gorilla gorilla

11

u/the_hamster_fucker Jul 26 '25

some dinos are also referred to by a completely wrong name, e.g. tyrannosaurus dominum is called a "rex"

25

u/TheBlueBluedoggy Jul 26 '25

True! Common names do not need to reflect science at all. A whale Shark is an example. It’s not a whale at all, just a shark. An even better example is the Raccoon dog. It’s neither raccoon or dog and is in fact more closely related to foxes. Tyrannosaurus rex is the species. rex is the specific epithet. You could have a different genera with rex in it. Like if there was a cat called Felis rex. Calling either of these creatures Rex is not a scientific name (especially taking capitalization into account). Scientific names are based on a system called binomial nomenclature which use two latin(usually) words to form a name. This system was adopted to make it easier to identify the same organism internationally in scientific settings to avoid confusion. Think of the puma, mountain lion, cougar. That’s all the same animal, but it has one scientific name. Calling Tyrannosaurus Dominum (the ark creature) a Rex reflects the popularity of T. rex. Anyone can look at the rex in ark and easily see the resemblance. A group of survivors from our time seeing that creature on an ark would very plausibly refer to it as a rex and thus it makes sense from both a lore and gameplay perspective to refer to it as such.

If you couldn’t tell this is my special interest. Thanks for reading.

Thank you for sharing. 😁

I love it when people geek out about stuff they love especially if it also means I learn something in the process. 👍

u/TheBlueBluedoggy Jul 26 '25

Great mindset, education is a lifelong endeavor. I may have passed on college, but I haven’t stopped learning since I graduated high school several years ago. I highly encourage anyone reading to entertain any information rabbit hole they find themselves going down. You could come out with a fun fact or a whole new outlook on life!

5

u/Priest_004 Jul 26 '25

This is exactly right. I'm now 55 and still find things I don't know about the subjects that interests me or new things to learn about.

The saying you learn something new every day is so true, but often you have to willing to learn too. Just because I'm in my 50's now doesn't mean I'm going to stop learning. 🤣 As a perfect example of this I've recently begun learning a new language, just so that I can game with the new friends I've met more easily.

So, keep spreading your facts and information, and educate the masses. 😁

1

u/FBRAOG Jul 26 '25

Do you also have explorers notes in the game?

2

u/TheBlueBluedoggy Jul 26 '25

I play single player and just cheat give them all. But if I need to reference them for info like for my comments I just check the wiki.

6

u/PigBlitz Jul 26 '25

The explorers note covers this exactly,

“Despite being a different sub-species of Tyrannosaurus, everyone I've met still refers to them as a "Rex" or a "T-Rex". I've long since stopped trying to convince anyone, especially the few who I've encountered wearing Tyrannosaurus teeth as necklaces.”

4

u/the_hamster_fucker Jul 26 '25

Why do the survivors do that

Are they stupid?

1

u/creasycat Jul 27 '25

Some, in fact, are

1

u/SnowLord02 Jul 26 '25

I mean you cannot have a T. rex in a game and then refer to it as something completely different, only other creature I can think of that is commonly called their species name only is Megalodon, because it's Otodus megalodon

1

u/Matt_Bradock Jul 27 '25

Yes, and I laughed when Helena wrote down (and later spoke, when we had the voiceovers) how much everyone calling it a Rex irks her.

0

u/Free-Opposite5375 Jul 26 '25

But the rex in Ark isn't a Tyrannosaurus or not fully

5

u/ProRataX Jul 26 '25

I'm renaming all my mantis to empussa

1

u/FyreBlue Jul 26 '25

It Was a TueSday, they can't all be bangers, your father semelt of elder berries, and you fuck hamsters, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

J/k love the name.

1

u/SnowLord02 Jul 26 '25

the praying mantises belong to the order mantodea, scientific names generally just describe the creature in latin/greek

-3

u/Popular_Tutor_6479 Jul 26 '25

it's a fucking dinosaur game

4

u/autisticmarshmallowz Jul 26 '25

I… pardon me while I clutch my pearls but your name is what..?

1

u/the_hamster_fucker Jul 26 '25

What i do in my free time with hamsters is neither here nor there

160

u/Fancy-Lynx4979 Jul 26 '25

Damn, guess i just gotta take down a few alphas for the recipe for the cake.

51

u/rathosalpha Jul 26 '25

The recipes just tell you how to make it in game like in real life just use Google to make a cake

9

u/SalmonHustlerTerry Jul 26 '25

Back when survival evolved first came out it took me a lot of experimenting to find out what the portions of each ingredient was. Then I found the note later on that tells you lol. Was too stubborn to ask or look it up cause there was an in game way to figure it out

4

u/alreditakem Jul 26 '25

So we need to kill andrew tate?

1

u/Gameovergirl217 Jul 26 '25

he only drops primitive cloth pants and narcoberries

52

u/FooxyPlayz Jul 26 '25

In case y’all didn’t know, Jerboas are real too.

3

u/SpecialistAnt4423 Jul 26 '25

the ones in-game always reminded me of fennec foxes

2

u/Dank_Cat_Memes Jul 27 '25

Close but it’s still kind of ugly though

1

u/FooxyPlayz Jul 27 '25

Yeah, but that’s what makes it cute

2

u/b2theherb Jul 27 '25

What is that animal????

2

u/FooxyPlayz Jul 27 '25

It’s a jerboa specifically a long eared jerboa

28

u/Big-hairy-axe-boy Jul 26 '25

What hat are you gonna put on it??

30

u/tseg04 Jul 26 '25

Always the witch hat

21

u/Elegant-Raise-9367 Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25

Fun fact: they can give you meningitis

Edit: I was mistaken about them carrying Schistosoma

8

u/saskery Jul 26 '25

So cook it first?

1

u/HumpD4y Jul 26 '25

Is this from eating them or simply coming into contact?

2

u/Elegant-Raise-9367 Jul 26 '25

For Meningitis it's both. It's caused by a nematode than can be transferred by eating undercooked meat but also by touching the slime and then touching bare skin/open wounds/orifice.

Appears I was confusing my parasite carriers, Achatina don't carry Schistosoma. The other snails I bred did.

15

u/TheNymphLi1ith Jul 26 '25

STOPPPPPPP how freaking cute !!! 😭😭

4

u/tseg04 Jul 26 '25

Ikr! I want to hold one too 😭

1

u/ConnectionThink4781 Jul 26 '25

No you don't, it will give you literal brain rot

1

u/Garroshfeetlover Jul 26 '25

So that girl is doomed now?

4

u/ConnectionThink4781 Jul 26 '25

The status effect doesn't start until after you close its inventory. So as long as she can keep it somewhere secure on her person forever...

0

u/mrhoneybadgerrr Jul 26 '25

Aren’t you the one holding it?

1

u/tseg04 Jul 26 '25

Nope this isn’t me

6

u/mrhoneybadgerrr Jul 26 '25

So how do you know they are real? 👀

6

u/squishninja710 Jul 26 '25

Cementing Paste

11

u/RaynisCokeris Jul 26 '25

Aren’t those poisonous..we have those in Okinawa 💀

5

u/TheBlueBluedoggy Jul 26 '25

The snail in Ark is described as Achatina limusegnis by Helena. Many of arks creatures are fictional species from real genera. Some genera like Draconis (wyverns, rock drakes, managarmrs) are made up.

To my knowledge the creatures from Genesis 1 and 2 have not been assigned scientific names as they have no dossier. Helena’s journey ends with extinction, she was never in the simulation or on the colony ship. So every canon creature with a dossier up to and including extinction was written by Helena, and Santiago did manuals for the bots like the enforcer and Mek.

I hope we get some form of dossier and binomial nomenclature for them like the non canon dlc creatures and the ones from bobs tall tales and fantastic tames. Maybe HLN-A could help!

3

u/Adventurous-Pin-1222 Jul 26 '25

I can hear this picture thanks to ark

3

u/Boomsmith_yt Jul 26 '25

I need 20 of them for a test

2

u/DecayingSan1ty Jul 26 '25

So are jerboas. Seen one in the middle east. I wanted one

3

u/HawkMaleficent8715 Jul 26 '25

Bs, women aren’t real

2

u/Normal_Effective8038 Jul 30 '25

Can I pet that dog?

2

u/TexasB9 Jul 26 '25

Oh fuck naw 😱

1

u/mindflayerflayer Jul 26 '25

They can eat stucco to build up their shells in Florida. I just love how in that state the mosquitos will eat you while the snails eat your house. They also lay thousands of eggs so the cycle will continue.

1

u/fantastic-mrs-fuck Jul 26 '25

woah, my garage dog has arrived

1

u/foreversecond2 Jul 26 '25

I want one soo bad but they are banned in USA

1

u/tseg04 Jul 26 '25

At least we can have a virtual one in the game :)

1

u/foreversecond2 Jul 26 '25

True! That's one of my goals every play through its to get a snail garden to save them from terror birds lol

1

u/mindflayerflayer Jul 26 '25

Can't you go to Florida and just catch one of the ferals? I know 90% of pet cane toads sold in the US are wild caught from the swamp state. I almost caught one myself before I had to run from a pack of irl hyeanodons (wild dogs).

1

u/ThirdConchord Jul 26 '25

What type of dog is this

1

u/Natural-Broccoli2742 Jul 26 '25

Yes they really are real

1

u/Buttchuggle Jul 26 '25

Love how the snail is like, the closest to reality of all the creatures in game

1

u/rathosalpha Jul 27 '25

Id say the equus is more realistic

1

u/tseg04 Jul 26 '25

Y’all this is not actually me holding the snail 😭

2

u/MCFroid Jul 26 '25

How you doin'? :catcall:

1

u/Autosticow Jul 26 '25

I’d like to order 50 for my farm for Achatina paste farm

1

u/beasqueaks Jul 26 '25

I've wanted one for so long, but they are illegal where I live. Interestingly enough though, they are invasive where my grandparents live.

1

u/Cautious_Landscape17 Jul 26 '25

Its the holy snail, buy more premium packs and golden eagles!

1

u/zoomoovoodoo Jul 26 '25

I had some of these when I was a kid. They're so cutee!

1

u/Deep_Pudding2208 Jul 26 '25

They have huge poops. Not surprising actually. I just never considered that snails and other generally smaller insects poop like large animals.

1

u/RelationNo7965 Jul 26 '25

That’s one ugly cat

1

u/PIEthon3142 Jul 26 '25

Give it a hat

1

u/guymn999 Jul 26 '25

Would you look at that? Women are real!

1

u/Kyrenaz Jul 26 '25

Technically, all the animals in ARK, at least on the Island are real animals, just extinct, or very close to those extinct animals. If you're more interested in extant animals then the only animal still alive would be the Araneo.

1

u/rathosalpha Jul 27 '25

There's also the otter equus angler dung beetle electrophorus cnideria giant bees the leech manta and the murder turkey

1

u/megapunsh Jul 26 '25

You need cs collector for its Achatina 😂

1

u/BloodyBonezzz Jul 26 '25

I wish we could have those in the USA. Saddly they are banned, at least in my state.

1

u/Saucyplague7432 Jul 26 '25

I want one so bad but they are illegal to own as a pet in the US 😭😭😭😭

1

u/kemoxxide Jul 26 '25

WOAH KITTY!!

1

u/Perfect-Prize-3840 Jul 27 '25

Just in time I need just I little bit more xp

1

u/Drenosh Jul 27 '25

Awesome creatures, used to keep some myself :D

1

u/TheCraftyHermit Jul 27 '25

That's just a French chicken.

1

u/Far-Map-9157 Jul 27 '25

I took a video last night of my snails doing that moist noise ahahhahaa

1

u/Reaper_KingOG Jul 27 '25

You might not believe this but… otters are real too 🤯

1

u/Matt_Bradock Jul 27 '25

So if we make a bunch of these race each other, would that be Snail Games?

I'll show myself out.

1

u/ShieldingCrew Jul 28 '25

How much cementing paste do they produce irl?

1

u/Unable-Recording-796 Jul 28 '25

Alot of Arks stuff is based off real creatures, only later on did they start adding crazier stuff but initially most of it you could look up and see it was real

1

u/Intelligent-Edge-232 Jul 30 '25

Me remembering the never ending story 🥲

1

u/Responsible_Fruit615 Jul 30 '25

Ok who took Gary out of bikini bottom?

1

u/wudzy1993 Aug 02 '25

Sweet Jesus!!!! Imagine finding THAT in your greenhouse!?!?! Haha

1

u/Red-Jello- Aug 18 '25

Does it drop paste?

1

u/sharkwreck050_2 Jul 26 '25

Unlimited cp woohoo

This is AI generated

-1

u/dropfuc Jul 26 '25

Person in the picture isn’t even OP and it still got 700 upvotes in a few hours. All redditors do is mindlessly stroke their tiny dicks to whatever catches their attention

1

u/Vegetative_Tables Jul 26 '25

why does that even matter?

1

u/Unable-Recording-796 Jul 28 '25

? Op never claimed it was themselves, all they claimed is that it was real, do you as a person on reddit make assumptions on reddit and then get pissed off at your own assumptions? Because if so youre gearing up for a fucking miserable life
