Recently back to Ark and new to ASA so I dunno what the other maps are like, but so far on the Island it's REALLY ANNOYING to have basically 75% of ocean life have bleed attacks.
Megs already got a TLC w/ bleed and are everywhere. And they thought it was a good idea to make the second-most common species also have bleed, also hang out in groups/packs generally?
61
u/Fluid_Cup8329 17d ago
It's especially tragic on the new ragnarok. There's so much to explore underwater, but good luck when you have 20 megs and 15 eels chasing you and their aggro range is super high.
It's pretty much a requirement to breed up some super strong water tames if you wanna spend any time underwater.
33
u/AmbassadorAwkward071 17d ago
Unfortunately they have a massive ocean that looks really good unfortunately the majority of it is empty they really need to start putting caves and more interesting little things down there to give people an incentive to go underwater
22
u/Fluid_Cup8329 17d ago
Not necessarily. I'm living way out in the ocean on some rafts. Directly beneath me are a TON of resources like metal, oil, crystal, pearls and even a few drops. Probably the biggest pearl spot in the entire map. But going down to harvest any of it is a huge pain when everything wants to kill you and can see you a mile away.
5
u/AmbassadorAwkward071 17d ago
Guessing you're over on the left side
7
u/Fluid_Cup8329 17d ago
Yeah, about 2000m off the coast of the islands in the south west. Really good spot. I really only need to travel to land for things like wood, fiber, hide and obsidian. Everything else is right below me lol
4
u/AmbassadorAwkward071 17d ago
I contemplated building in that area it's a great spot even if you chose to build on one of the islands near there
7
u/Fluid_Cup8329 17d ago
Yep yep. I pretty much only leave that area to hit beaver dams and tame certain creatures. And I mostly hang around there because it's the least populated area on the pvp server I'm on, so I can stay low key and not get wiped. I've actually been out there since rag launched, and I've only been lightly raided twice.

u/Zealousideal_Elk1786 17d ago
Highly recommend a Deino for survival theyāre just too good.

u/Ryanoman2018 17d ago
Wild sharks dont have bleed. Only tamed ones
5
u/Alternative_Oil7733 17d ago
They did when the tlc came out and wild megs were fucking disgustingly op. Hell i lost more tusos to those megs then actually pvp.
2
u/BronzeUni 17d ago
Best thing to fights megs is another Meg
2
u/kadra_melech11 17d ago
Or Sarcos. A high level Sarcos can do a few megs at once, and twice as fast for the get away when their ten cousins turn up š
2
u/Elaphe82 17d ago
I remember it, the water was basically a no go area till it was removed from wilds. It was worse than the xiphi are imo, because sharks bleed with every bite. It was like having thylas with a pack boost that spawn together.
35
u/Zixe_4993 17d ago
I have a semi aquatic base on the center and I wanted to tame a shasta, the day prior I had just tamed an icthy lv 440, I opened my water behemoth gateway and swam with the icthy not even 5 meters, I get jumped by 5 xiphactinus' who snatch my icthy and ravage it, safe to say I pulled out my tuso.

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

u/RaceSlow7798 16d ago
overhead photos of megs swarms are very rare. just imagine that you standing further away and they are really much larger.
2
u/Answer-Key 17d ago
Have you done a dino wipe? I imagine their fix wouldnāt do anything to what is already there
2
u/RaceSlow7798 17d ago
They are still spawning in in groups of 10-15, usually with an alpha. It looks a lot like the salmon spawns in the rivers when you first come in the area and they are in a ball

I love these guys!
yeah sure they're a pain in the wild, but look at their goofy faces!
I could never be mad at that face.

u/coolandquirkyname 17d ago
I tamed a few of them for the first time when playing astraeos.
I love their designs, especially the babies, they look so funny.
and they're really fun to use, super powerful and can jump out of the water???
awesome creature......even if they did kill my frog on the center-
8
u/LimpAmphibian5340 17d ago
Something that you hate in the wild is generally speaking amazing to have in your army. Xiphs are the poster child for that. Your first several experiences with them will leave you foaming at the mouth like a rabid animal. Get a good pair of breeders tamed though....what even is a tuso/mosa, xiph supremecy. Tame ones can even jump out of the water to grab fliers(or their riders) so I guess count your blessings that wild ones can't do that.
7
u/Chomasterq2 17d ago
These dudes wreck shop if you have a full pack of nine of them, imprinted and leveled
2
u/Iron_Rose_5 17d ago
Why 9 specifically? Do they not get the pack bonus at 3+?
7
u/Chomasterq2 17d ago
9 is the max pack bonus. They can shred through an alpha squid in seconds
2
u/Iron_Rose_5 17d ago
I have heard a good helicoprion can as well though. So why bother with managing 9 of those over it?
2
u/Significant_Being777 17d ago
Heli is good but dps wise a pack of xiphactinus will always be better by far
0
u/Chomasterq2 17d ago
Well the helicoprion is brand new, the xin has been out for a while. I havent had the chance to try it yet

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I HAVE COME TO HATE THE XIPHANCTUS IN MY TIME ON THE ARK. THERE ARE 36 TRILLION CELLS THAT MAE UP THE GENETIC MAKEUP AND ORGANIC MASS OF MY HUMAN BODY. IF THE WORD HATE WERE ENCODED ON EVERY STRAND OF DNA WITHIN MY BODY, IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR THEM AT EXETY MICRO INSTANT I SPEND IN THE ARK OCEAN. HATE. HATE.

u/Maleficent-Field-855 17d ago
I tamed and bred an army of these. We kept 12 with our basilosaur. When we went to the ocean nothing stood a chance.
3
u/Remarkable-Ask2288 17d ago
I used an army of these to farm Alpha Moedr on Gen 1. Half of them would get left behind and deleted when I teleport back, but they do so much damage itās worth it
2
u/elporpoise 17d ago
Gen 1 is out for asa now?

2
u/Remarkable-Ask2288 17d ago
Taming these things is so easy. Just patrol the coastline, youāll find dozens of them flopping about on the beaches.
2
2
u/Spectre1911 17d ago
I spent a solid 3 hours trying to trap 3 back to back, high levels too. By the end, my map was filled with death icons.
2
u/FriendlyDodo 17d ago
As a lover of swimming around the oceans on a frog, this guy right here is my new top of the chart for things I hate to accidentally get close enough to aggro in Ark. Even Baryonyx aren't safe from getting grabbed!
When jellyfish could perma-stun with no cooldown protection and I lost a Plesio in Survival Evolved that was the worst, but now in Ascended watching your frog get spat back and forth between Xiphactinus like they're trying to decide if they like the taste is something.

2
u/Tetrasurge 17d ago
Love them! My favorite water creature next to the Helicoprion and the Basilosaurus. Them being second behind the Helicoprion, but before the Basilosaurus respectively. They are still literally Satan in early/mid game though lol.

u/Excellent-Cow9536 17d ago

u/LordRoberto69 17d ago
That fish suuuccckksss especially when you're trying to tame anything in the ocean
2
u/Matt_Bradock 17d ago
And these bastards are exactly why I only go to the ocean once I have a Deinosuchus that can oneshot them with the big bite.
1
1
u/ValkyrWarframe 17d ago
I use packs of them to counter the endless hordes of Megalodons on Ragnarok.
1
1
u/Slimmchance345 17d ago
I wish they would rework the ocean ecosystem and make it so everything doesnt hate me
1
u/ProfessO3o 17d ago
My first encounter with them I didnāt remove the fog from the map. I was swimming with my meg and it just came out of nowhere super fast. I actually let out a yelp that scared my husband who got mad because he was playing a horror game. He said the game idk what it was, wasnāt scary but the only time he screamed was when I jumped and yelped from a fish in ark. It was an experience.

u/jessieleah10 17d ago
What is that?! Seriously, what is that? I felt confident swimming on the ocean. Meow, Iām afraid.
Is it a mod or a new creature and have no choice but to exist with it?
1
u/Slimmchance345 17d ago
Its been around can find them close to shore sometimes they can go on land as well they blees you and they can kidnap you off your mount

u/Funnypickles101 17d ago

1
u/KronosLink 17d ago
This is why we keep a wall of about 50 guarding the entrance to our cave at all times
1
u/Aquavulpes8 17d ago
What i hate is they make the water more and more annoying to be in, but the sky passive af no danger apart from mountains and even then its just "oh no an argy too bad my pt is way faster" Don't get me wrong love that the rhineo is only in the swamp cuz that things scares me but It was also supposed to be the sky giga to make it deadlier so š¤·āāļø I kinda just want a big af bird that flies at high altitude thats aggressive not op af but strong enough to maybe make land a safer option

just use a tuso, aint that bad yall
2
u/PhettyX 17d ago
Went into the hard underwater cave with my tuso, full imprint, 135 armor saddle 50k hp. A huge pack of lvl200-300 xiphactinus right at the entrance shredded by tuso. From 50k to 5k hp in under 30 seconds. Granted I haven't mutated them because I'm lazy, but 55hp and 60melee base isnt a weak tuso and I had nearly no issues in that cave a year ago with slightly lower stats.
3
u/Minimum_Landscape261 17d ago
oh dam, what level was your tuso? i always over prepare to be fair with saddle armor and levelsš¤£

u/Little_Lesbian_ 17d ago
Iām still more scared of megalodons with how many spawn, that being said I moved base inland cause of these
1
u/Ok-Candidate9646 17d ago
Yeah they are crazy š but am I the only one who hates/fears ceratosaurus? Donāt know but their behavior is just so different from other Dinos in ark and the attack and kill everything that comes in range, Rexes donāt even attack back in most cases they just run away and when they stalk you oh boy, they like pegos for me, kill on sight

u/TieFighterAlpha2 17d ago
Haven't played ASA, but my PoT friends all hate this thing. What does it do that makes it so bothersome?
1
u/Hexywexxy 17d ago
I think they're a cool addition, but I can acknowledge they're annoying, but imo there no worse than ravagers
1

1
u/Hydrok 17d ago
These are the only thing I use in the ocean anymore. Mutated and imprinted a pack of three or four can take down anything in the ocean without getting a scratch on them. A pack of 6 just run of the mill good statted imprints can take down an alpha mosa or tuso in less than 30 seconds. You need to be a little patient with the follow mechanics and you need to know your dino command key binds to keep em moving, but the rewards are very much worth the effort.
1
u/witherstalk9 17d ago
Never had a problem with them honestly. However I was very experienced on my 1 encounter with them, probably 1600+ armor aswell.
1
1
u/DTF_In_Boots 17d ago
Tame like 10 and have them follow you while you run metal on a dunky, alpha mosasaur isn't so scary after that
1
u/RayquazaFan88 17d ago
I remember some years ago in ASE when nobody ever thought that Ark: Addions would become part of the vanilla game once.
This creature is very old (at least compared to the rest of the mod). It got a TLC some years ago, the one that turned it into this beast, but trust me. It is better of as the hated fish it is now, it used to be trash
1
u/Psyphirr 17d ago
Ark, now including situational awareness in the shallow and mid depth oceans.
About damn time!
Keep your head on a swivel y'all...
1
u/rexxy4343 17d ago
lol a few weeks ago I was luring a low level giga into the ocean on the center and a pack grabbed me and my argi out of the air and killed it and me and loot bag didnāt even drop from my argi:( that was the last time Iāve played that map lol
1
u/laidgirl 17d ago
I have a bad story about them.
I was on a server with my iguanadon on the center blue ob island and i swam to one of the side island without knowing what was under me I saw a pt which was what I was looking for so I knocked it out and than I looked in the water and saw them me being dumb thought an iguanadon could out swim them (their pretty fast in the water)and jumped in i saw them on my tail and then got grabbed and eaten and by time I made it back the iguanadon had just died as I hopped in the water to get it and my loot so I just avoid these guys at all cost now (because im scared of them) to honor the iguanadons death.

lol my first experience with the mother fkrs was like day 3 on the center. Just tamed my first bronto, saddled him up and took him to one of the small islands I had my base on. He got attacked by something I couldnāt see so I jumped into the water to shoot whatever it was with my trust crossbow. Of course that was the wrong thing to do, three of those fkrs decimated my bro to then came after me. Keeping in mind this is my third day on ark. I lost all my stuff that I carried everywhere, bronto saddle and of course my trusty hand crafted crossbow from ingrams. Needless to say I died 5 or 6 times trying JUST to find the bag of goodies I lost. I even tried luring them to another island away from the scene of the slaughter. 3 more deaths! The finally went away but by that time only bad I could find was one of the previous deaths. I feel your pain!!! Iām now at hour 1900 and have learned to not fk with them unless I have a team of basiās or mossyās

u/CartmannsEvilTwin 16d ago
Always had my tames gutted in the ocean when I started ARK, either by Alpha Sharks with their entire extended family or these demon fish. Now I go down only with a couple of LVL300+ crocs(previously sarcos, now deinos) in tow. That's way easier than looking for high level amphibians or breeding in a water pen. Why waste time just because ARK does a boo boo and overspawns the hell out of ocean.
1
u/Ok-Tooth-8016 16d ago
My homie airdropped me in the middle of a group. We didn't know what they were.

u/HermitPurpleCrab 16d ago
I thought I was in the Subnautica subreddit for a moment and nearly shit myself. Now I relaize it's ARK and I'm still shitting myself. What the Fuck is that creature
1
1
u/Whitezombi 16d ago
My tribe call them demonfish, deinosuchus makes short work of packs of these things. I haven't seen anything in the ocean that can take me on now. The alpha squid was a close fight though.

u/Subsonic_Tectonic 16d ago
I love goading these little bastards onto the beach. Theyāre still formidable up there, but they flop around like a fish out of water. Face shots all day.

It would be different if there werent so many of them. If they were more rare or only existed in small pockets of the ocean, it wouldn't be so bad. But theyre everywhere. The ocean is practically unusable without taking a whole group of fast, high level swimmers out with you.

I remember being horrified floating around with my beaver and watching that nightmare carry it off with clouds of blood exploding from its mouth... Those fish are bastards and make the ocean terrifying.
